Artificial Intelligence an Uncertain Future

 My name is Siymion, I am the founder and Spiritual guide of the  Equilibriati, before I tell you about the organization if you will permit me, I would like to introduce the following passage that is part of an article published in the  New York Times and the Washington Post September 19, 1995. Many of you I'm sure have already read it and know the identity of the author, for those of you that haven't I shall enlighten you shortly.


First let us postulate that the computer scientists succeed in developing intelligent machines that can do all things better than human beings can do them. In that case presumably all work will be done by vast, highly organized systems of machines and no human effort will be necessary. Either of two cases might occur. The machines might be permitted to make all of their own decisions without human oversight, or else human control over the machines might be retained.


If the machines are permitted to make their own decisions, we can't make any conjectures to the results, because it is impossible to guess how such machines might behave. We only point out that the fate of the human race would be at the mercy of machines. It might be argued that the human race would never be foolish enough to hand over all power to the machines. But we are suggesting neither the human race would voluntarily turn power over to the machines nor that the machines would wilfully seize power. What we do suggest is that the human race might easily permit itself to drift into a position of such dependence on the machines that it would have no practical choice but accept all of the machines' decisions. As society and the problems that face it become more and more complex and machines become more and more intelligent people will let machines make more of their decisions for them, simply because machine-made decisions will bring better results than man-made ones. Eventually a stage may be reached at which the decisions necessary to keep the system running will be so complex that human beings will be incapable of making them intelligently. At that stage the machines will be in effective control. People wont be able to just turn the machines off, because they will be so dependant on them that turning them off would amount to suicide.


On the other hand it is possible that human control over the machines may be retained. In that case the average man may have control over certain private machines of his own, such as his car or his personal computer, but control over large systems of machines will be in the hands of the tiny elite-just as it is today, but with two differences. Due to improved techniques the elite will have greater control over the masses; and because human work will no longer be necessary the masses will be superfluous, a useless burden on the system. If the elite is ruthless they may simply decide to exterminate the mass of humanity. If they are humane they may use propaganda or other psychological or biological techniques to reduce the birth rate until the mass of humanity become extinct, leaving the world to the elite. Or if the elite consists of soft hearted liberals, they may decide to play the role of good shepherd to the rest of the human race. They will see to it that everyone has a wholesome hobby to keep him busy, and that anyone who may be dissatisfied undergoes “treatment” to cure his “problem.” Of course life will be so purposeless that people will have to be biologically or psychologically engineered either to remove their need for the power process or make them “sublimate” their drive for power into some harmless hobby. These engineered human beings may be happy in such a society, but they will most certainly not be free. They will have been reduced to the status of domestic animals.


If you have read this before you will know where it is from if not you may be interested to know it is from a passage in a letter conceived by Theodore Kaczynski.(better known as the Unabomber)

While I do not condone the actions of Kaczynski it is obvious to many that this vision of a dystopian future does not require a great stretch of imagination. His reasoning presents itself as sound. So how does this relate to the Equilibriati? The Equilibriati has been founded to monitor and inform the general public of all significant threats to the freedom and existence of the human race and spirit. This is no place for conspiracies we deal in hard facts and there by counter the bias of a corporate influenced media, by giving the general public an independent source of Knowledge. So that they can act and influence the powers that be in order to benefit the masses.

Do not confuse the Equilibriati with Socialism or Communism. This is not about left or right, political system designed to blind and manipulate people from the truth, this is about up and down, those that have and those that haven't. It is about bringing Knowledge and therefore power back to the people. It is about equality and liberation from all forms of repression. It is about Direct Democracy, Community, Morality, Sustainability and Harmonization. Technology should be used for the benefit of all to bring us ultimately closer to a Utopian society that can live at peace and be respectful of each others beliefs

Spare a thought for the indifference

That society lets stain

The countless world sufferance

That prevails in our rein

Spare a thought for the hunger that ravages, who's to blame?

As the parent-less grow younger

Left unchecked where is our shame?

Spare a thought for the oppressed and the downtrodden, plights bereft

Arise from complacence; hatred grows like cancer if it's left

Spare a thought for the felt injustice

As our coffers grow on high

How can we refute this?

While hell rains down from their sky?

Spare a thought for the children and the hopes for them we share

Making action our steed, for a world for them that's fair



Edmund Burke said:

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.



My apologies to the ladies reading but that aside the sentiment of the statement could not be more true. We are at a crossroads in the existence of Humankind, our small world is vulnerable and faces many challenges ahead in an uncertain future but the human spirit gives us hope. We are each and everyone of us responsible. It is the Equilbriati aim to protect that hope!
