I work for WV Birth to Three. I'd like to use some of the info on this site for our spring newsletter---does anyone know who I can contact to obtain consent? Thanks, Dawn
What a great website! My son is at Washington. Betsy Peterson is a GREAT resource! Alwasy use her first! Our group will be the first to graduate next year as a full class. Unfortunatley, things are not going well. I will be filing a complaint later this week or next. We have a meeting this Wednesday, but nothing ever changes. My son and another student were the first ones at NJES 15 years ago. I thought there was communication after all these years, but things have changed in the last two years. I am very disheartened and actually disgusted. Those of you that know me, know I don't give up. I am going to fight to the end! Say a prayer for me.
Hey Stacy! Sorry we missed the session you guys held this past Thursday. Brandon's class had a special event at Pump It Up that evening. I hope all is well for you, and have a great Thanksgiving!!!
Hi there! We are having a disability awareness day on Sept 12 in Berkeley Springs and would love to have your group set up a table to share info with folks. Please let me know if you would be interested!
Hi. I hope to make a meeting sometime soon. I have twin boys that are at North Jefferson in the Autism program, they are 7. My older son has Asperger's he is 8. Your website looks wonderful. Hope to meet soom of you soon!
I was told of this website from a teacher at my grandson's school. He has ASD. My problem is a little different as my daughter has handed over custody of him to me and my husband. The last time we raised kids was over 35 yrs ago. I am looking for a support group in Martinsburg area to find out if I am the only one dealing with trying to make him understand why his mom left - she recently left the home but they have been with us for the past 8 years. This entire thing is taking a toll on our lives, my health and I just need some guidance. I see you have a Thursday evening meeting but I work at the college that night and my husband works in DC so that one is not doable. I heard about a parents program that meets the 3rd Friday of the month at Trinity United Methodist church. If so, where is this church and can I bring my grandson with me?
Thanks for listening and I appreciate any feedback possible.
Many thanks for all of the hard work you do with this site. It is full of wonderful information that is very valuable to parents who are having difficulites with their children with autism.
Please continue to inform parents of their Procedural Safeguards that are afforded to them by the Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act (IDEA) as well as Policy 2419: Regulations for the Education of Students with Exceptionalities (WV's policy for educating students with exceptionalities). The Procedural Safeguards offer parents many options when it comes to dispute resolution. Those include: mediation, complaints, early resolution to comoplaints, due process complaints. Additionally, any parent is always able to contact my office at 1-800-642-8541 if they have questions or concerns that they want to disucss. Many times these issues and concerns are miscommunications that can be worked out easily.
Thanks again for all of your hard work!!

I am the coordinator for Autism and Behavior Disorders for Berkeley County Schools. Some of you may know me as the AU teacher at Burke St.El. many years ago. I have been and will continue to be student oriented, as the parents of my students would attest. Your web site provides valuable information. However, when viewing the Special Ed law section I felt it emphasized filing complaints. The complaint process is there for your child's protection. I am certainly NOT implying that you should not utilize this process, I would however, ask that if, after speaking to your child's teacher, you do not feel the issue has been resolved that you contact the Special Education Coordinator for your school, the AU/BD coordinator (me), the Assistant Director or the Director of Special Education prior to submitting a formal complaint. Many of the issues may be resolved easily, but we need to be aware that a problem exists before we may attempt to fix it. There will certainly be times when a resolution can not be reached and initiang a formal complaint is necessary. However, I truly feel problems can be resolved more often than not.
