With adcancements in technology and medicine, it seemed almost a matter of time before someone took advantage and began creating a better soldier. Why have a hundred of soldiers go into battle if you could accomplish the same with ten. Not only accomplish, but have the mission be more accurate, finished in half the time, and then objective satisfied hundred percent.
Such advancements in human evolution were restricted to breeding experiments among scientist and private organizations. Later, 'Manticore' was founded secretly by the US Military and began genetically engineering embryo's in laboratories as early as the 1970's.
Experiments to mix the genetic material of animals of humans, with no care as to outward appearance seemed to be a success. Special Operations Soldiers (Jungle Ops, Desert Ops, Arctic Ops, Aquatic Ops, etc.,) passed inspection and while secondary runs of their kind were put into motion, the goal of the project was initiated -- to create human looking soldiers with animalistic characteristics that would make them faster, stronger, and all around better in the field.
They were dubbed the X-Series Soldiers. The first round of testing was successful in many ways. There were scientific breakthroughs and of the small group that were created, a handful met all the standards that Manticore had initially set out to meet. Their eyesight was greater than any human alive, as was their hearing, their memory, their agility, and their strenght.
Subsequent series came with new trials and new achievements. These allowed Manticore scientist more freedom and funding to continue to push the limits of human abilities. By X4, the technology necessary to create the soldier Manticore wanted had been fine-tuned and with X5, the first field-ready soldiers had been created. These soldiers were created specifically to work as leaders for later groups, but had been trained as a close-knit unit and were able to fight in pairs or groups on the battle field.
Ultimately, 8 X-Series Soldiers were created before funding was pulled on the project, due to outstanding losses and uncontrollable outside forces. A ninth series was set to begin a new round of experimentation, but subjects were terminated before birth, or remain at large as a result of the destruction of the remaining Manticore facility outside of Seattle.
Currently there are no plans to reinstitute Manticore, but subjects found in the field are wanted to regather genetic information gained during it's run.
