ÒI donÕt see why we have to go to this. WhatÕs the point?Ó

ÒThe point is that itÕs a neighborhood party, and it might be nice to get to know the people who live close by.Ó Buffy gave Spike a look. ÒBesides, itÕs Halloween, so you know itÕs going to be a slow night.Ó

ÒThatÕs what you think,Ó Wesley muttered.

She sighed. ÒIÕm sorry that Nika couldnÕt come, Wes, but try not to be such a wet blanket, okay?Ó

ÒYouÕre here as backup, mate,Ó Spike reminded him. ÒYou never know what might happen at one of these things.Ó

Buffy rolled her eyes and adjusted SpikeÕs bow tie. Wesley still couldnÕt quite believe that she had convinced him to go as James Bond, although he suspected that her dress had something to do with it. The red sheath was split on one side up to her mid-thigh, and while it had a high neck, it left most of her back bare. She made a very convincing Bond-girl; you would never guess sheÕd had a child recently.

Whereas he got stuck going as Q, because heÕd managed to find the tweed suit heÕd correctly thought was at the back of his closet.

Dawn and Connor had been happy to watch Meg for the evening, and they were supposed to have a double-date. Nika, however, had been asked to work a double shift, and the extra money was too tempting to pass up with their wedding rapidly approaching.

ÒBuffy! IÕm so glad you could make it!Ó The blonde woman in the LakersÕ cheerleading outfit was over-tanned and over-exposed in WesleyÕs opinion. ÒOh, and you brought your boyfriend!Ó She glanced over SpikeÕs shoulder at Wesley. ÒIs this your friend?Ó

ÒCousin,Ó Buffy lied smoothly. ÒFrom England. HeÕs SpikeÕs business partner. Wesley, this is my neighbor, Randi. With an ÔiÕ.Ó

ÒFrom England, huh?Ó Randi had attached herself to his arm so quickly that Wesley had no time to take evasive action. ÒI just love English accents.Ó

Wesley sighed internally. This was why heÕd been hesitant to attend without Nika. SheÕd planned on coming as Moneypenny. ÒYou have a lovely house,Ó he commented. ÒIÕm so sorry my fiancŽe was unable to come. WeÕre in the market for a new house, you know.Ó

Randi seemed to miss the point entirely. ÒOh, IÕm sorry she couldnÕt be here. IÕll just have to show you around.Ó

He threw a panicked look at Spike and Buffy, who both shrugged apologetically. ÒI think IÕm going to get something to drink,Ó Buffy announced. ÒSpike?Ó

ÒYeah, sure.Ó Spike kept his arm around BuffyÕs shoulders as they wandered off into the crowd, leaving Wesley to stare down at the hostess helplessly.

~~~~~
ÒThat was rather cruel, pet,Ó Spike commented once they were out of RandiÕs earshot.
Buffy winced. ÒI know, but if it wasnÕt Wes it was going to be you. IÕve seen her staring at your ass way too many times to trust her.Ó
He smirked. ÒCan you blame her?Ó
ÒNo, but thatÕs besides the point. We can rescue Wesley in a little while.Ó
Spike chuckled. ÒI give him fifteen minutes.Ó
ÒBefore what?Ó
ÒBefore he manufactures an excuse to run home,Ó Spike replied. ÒJust watch.Ó
BuffyÕs cell phone began buzzing inside her purse, and she quickly answered it. ÒWhat is it, Dawn? Is something wrong with Meg?Ó
ÒSheÕs a little fussy, but itÕs not a big deal. IÕm handling it,Ó Dawn replied confidently. ÒI was just wondering where you put the pizza money. The delivery guy should be here soon.Ó
ÒOh, crap.Ó She shot a panicked look at Spike. ÒI forgot. IÕll—Ó
ÒIÕll go.Ó
Buffy had no idea where Wesley had come from, or how heÕd known there was a problem. ÒWes—Ó
ÒItÕs no trouble, Buffy,Ó he said a little desperately. ÒReally
ÒWell, okay.Ó
She started to reach into her clutch for her money, but Wesley waved her off. ÒI donÕt mind taking care of it.Ó
HeÕd disappeared a moment later, obviously wanting to leave as quickly as possible. Spike was laughing silently.
ÒDonÕt say it.Ó
ÒI didnÕt say anythinÕ.Ó He grinned at her. ÒFace it, pet. Wes was never goinÕ to stay as soon as Nika took on the extra shift. You know how besotted he is with her.Ó
ÒMore than you are with me?Ó
Spike did that thing with his tongue that drove her insane. ÒI doubt it.Ó
Buffy only wished that they didnÕt have company back at her place; she would have happily dragged him over and put that tongue of his to much better use. In fact, Buffy was having a hard time remembering why she wanted to go to this party in the first place.
ÒTime for games!Ó Randi called. ÒWho wants to bob for apples?Ó
One of the women there stepped forward immediately. The ÒnurseÓ uniform she was wearing certainly wasnÕt regulation; the white skirt barely covered her ass, and when she bent over the aluminum tub, Buffy could see her underwear.
So could Spike. Buffy caught him looking and gave him a quick elbow to the ribs. ÒSpike!Ó she hissed.
ÒWhat?Ó he demanded. ÒItÕs impossible not to look.Ó
ÒIÕll give you something to look at,Ó Buffy muttered as the ÒnurseÓ emerged with an apple in her mouth.
She strolled forward to take her turn, casting a coy look over her shoulder at Spike as she took her place in front of the tub.
Buffy could see the ice floating in the water, and the apples bobbed up and down from the movement of the last player. Clasping her hands behind her back, Buffy bent from the waist, knowing that she was giving her audience quite the show.
She didnÕt care about the audience, though—just Spike.
Taking a deep breath, Buffy gave silent thanks that sheÕd thought to wear water-proof mascara, and managed to sink her teeth into her chosen apple on her first attempt.
Not at all surprised to find Spike standing next to her when she emerged with the fruit between her teeth, Buffy accepted the towel he held out with a smile of thanks. SpikeÕs cold hand splayed on the exposed skin of her back in a possessive gesture that made her smirk.
Buffy took a bite out of the cold, crisp apple and smiled at Randi. ÒI think weÕre going to head home early,Ó she announced. ÒMeg has been kind of fussy lately.Ó
ÒWhat happened to getting to know your neighbors?Ó Spike whispered in her ear on the way out.
She shrugged ÒWe came, we saw, we conquered.Ó Buffy grinned at him around another bite of the apple.
Spike grinned. ÒIndeed we did, luv
Now Buffy just had to figure out how to convince Wes or Dawn to take Meg for the night. Halloween was the SlayerÕs night off, after all, and she had new plans.
