Solar Panels in General

Solar Cells convert sunlight into DC electricity. Cells are wired together and sealed to form a module covered with low-iron tempered glass, anodized aluminium frame, ethylene vinyl acetate around the cells, tedlar back cover and a junction box. Two or more modules are connected together to form an array.

How Do They Work

Solar panels have a photovoltaic system. A photovoltaic system consists of solar cells made up of semiconductors. Semiconductors like silicon, conduct electricity between conductors for instance metal and nonconductors like ceramics. When the sunlight hits the cells the photons from the sunlight are absorbed and the energy is transferred to the electrons. Then the electrons separate from the atoms in the semiconductor. The electrons are then attached to the positive and negative sides of the battery.

Advantages and Disadvantages

The advantages of Solar Panels are:

~         Solar energy is free

~         It doesn’t need fuel

~         Produces no waste or pollution

~         Solar power can be used where there is no easy way to get electricity to a remote place

~         Good for uses such as solar powered garden lights and battery chargers

~         They last for a long time and need very little maintenance or supervision

The disadvantages of Solar Panels are:

~         Doesn’t work at night

~         Doesn’t work in the winter unless snow is melted or removed

~         Very expensive to originally get Solar Panels

~         Solar Panels cost a lot compared to the amount of electricity they produce

~         They are unreliable unless you're in a very sunny climate unlike Canada where more Solar Panels are needed to produce the same amount of energy as in the Southern U.S.

~         A battery is needed if your home requires power 24/7

~         The amount of energy produced by a Solar Panel is depends on the weather

Envrionmental Benefits

The environmental benefits of using solar panels are very large. Solar panels unlike fossil fuels don’t have any emissions like greenhouse gasses or other pollutants. When using solar panels or any other solar equipment will reduce your pollution because is you are going to use an electric water heater then the water heater would produce SO2, NOX and CO2 but the solar water heater would not so for every solar piece of equipment you have would reduce your pollution emission greatly.
