![]() Canterbury is the capital of the Anglican Communion, and founded in pre-Roman times as a fortified point. In A.D. 597 the conversion of England to Christianity was begun there by St Augustine. Huguenot refugees introduced weaving in later times, and the town has always had varied industries and some commercial importance. Its great cathedral was commenced in the 11th century. Canterbury is a university city.
