This site has been set up with the aim to help educate and inform about African Pygmy Hedgehogs (APH), which are a relatively new and delightful exotic pet to Irish shores. Since they are relatively new, much is still being learnt about them all the time, and ideas change constantly about best practise in being a guardian to an APH, so I hope to provide up to date information for new hedgie owners, who like me are going through the learning process.
In relation to my own learning, I hope that you will grow with me as my experience increases and that we can learn from each other. I would also like to add that information given on the site here is just advice based on what I have read or discussed with people and should never replace a visit to your vet, should you be worried about anything to do with your hedgehogs health. It is also important to note that research before getting your pet is excellent to do as then you know what you are letting yourself in for, but that the real work begins when we get our pets home as only then will the theory become reality.
That reality for me begins today 8th June 2008 as Ruby is finally home since yesterday and after a hectic night eating and exploring her new home/cage is asleep in her hedgie bag. You can read how I am getting on under the First few days section.
I am getting a new hedgehog and will keep you updated on our progress on the first few days page
Also as the site develops and as my experience develops, I hope to provide an Irish perspective for finding good proper equipment for your hedgie. Here you will be able to find out about hedgehogs in mythology, facts about your African pygmy hedgehog and how to provide and care for your cute little bundle of quills.
I have been asked where the site got its name and basically hedgehogs are charming creatures and in Irish folklore they have been associated with witches, so that's were the name came from.
Please bear with me as some pages are occassionally offline for editing purposes but they will be back up and running shortly. I will be regularly updating the pages and correcting mistakes, improving and updating information. Do drop back to see how we are doing.
