My amp suffered the failure a year ago and I finally got around to looking inside. I find that one of the diodes on the power supply board is bad and the heat marred the markings so that I can not determine the rating. It appears that on one row of diodes all 3 are the same and that the other row has two of the same rating, does anyone know what the spec is for replacement?
After reading this forum, Amazon's, and a few others--it seems to be relatively common for the amps in BOTH of these models to suffer a premature death--within a few years. I've read individual users having multiple failures as well. I understand that unsatisfied owners will be the one's to likely post, but the Klipsch failures appear to be disproportionately higher than other brands and this is observable in many forums. The issue, as I understand it, is a failed resistor. Am I correct? Are the resistors being replaced with others from the same vendor/ratings or are the failing resistors merely a symptom of a different problem that needs to be addressed?
A few days ago I started noticing this chirping squeaking sound. I never gave it much thought thinking it was coming from the construction outside and didn’t use the computer since that point in time. Today I got in front of the computer and turned on my speakers and I noticed it again. I thought it maybe my sound card. I disconnected the ultras from the computer. The sound is still there. I tried a different socket, a different surge protector, I switched around the speakers, I even used headphones. Every single time, that chirping/squeaking sound was still present. So is my amp going bad? It seems to only be the front left and right channel. This seems really random, especially after they have worked perfectly for almost 2 years now. I did a quick search but I didn't find anyone with a similiar problem. Also, I bought them originally on October 19th, 2003. The day after they died and I had them RMAed thru Klipsch. Are my Speakers still under a warrenty. I do remember filling out some sort of extended warrenty thing online.
I hate to say it, but just shortly after 3 years, my promedia system is dead. I got a call from my brother while at work saying they're clicking. I get music for a few minutes but then my sats cut out and i get an intermittent clicking sound. All you veteran promedia owners who have been through hell and back with these things, what can I do? Can I get them repaired? Or get a new set? I have receipt and original packaging. Please let me know I'm devastated.
Oh my god. I purchased these ProMedia 5.1 THX's a little over a year ago. They clicked last week and died day before yesterday. I called tech support to find out what could be wrong. The tech said "send them in" for $90 plus shipping costs. I think parts may be additional too. I hardly ever used them and now there broke. Boy did I get swindled. After visiting this forum for support options I found *all* these threads about DEAD PROMEDIA's. What's going on with these speakers? I can't afford to repair these every year or too. Also, why are there so many mean people on these forums. I see all these people like DRAGON FYR and especially the DREAMTHEATER guy that just tells people they shouldn't expect there speakers to work after a year or 2 and THEY are the one's that haven't had problems? They rant about warranties and all kinds of crap. Kinda sounds like employees. I bet there outlook would change if they paid over $375 and got a bum set of speakers. I'm not going to send them in, pay, and cross my fingers. I will invest in something else or nothing at all. My son said I could just run the audio cable from my computer sound output to my Home Entertainment receiver (which I've had for 8 years). Would this be ok? It's a Pioneer 5.1 and has a DVD source available... He said I could just select the DVD source when I use my computer which is once or twice a week. He or I are not experts in this though. Any ideas?
i ordered a 5.1 Ultra system and it came in about 2 hours ago. it worked fine and I was testing it out when like 10-15 min into it, it stopped. the power works because i can see that it's on but no sound comes out of it. when i turn it on i can hear a click noise from the sub, does that mean the amp is dead? i cant seem to get it to work, i tried replugging it in, tried using a diff. computer, but it still wont work. does anyone know what my problem is and how i can fix it? thanks
What can I do to be able to use my system again? I had a 2 year warranty but it has expired. It's definately the satellite amp or something as you can hear the bass but nothing is sent to the 5 satellites (which still work just fine when used on another system)
Well, many months ago I had to order a new control unit for my Promedia Ultra's, because the current one would sometimes not power on, or would not let you access the channel options or headphone mode.(you'd press the power button from the main volume and hear a click but nothing would change) Now the second control unit is doing it. Sometimes re-plugging the control unit into the sub fixes it (temporarily), sometimes it doesn't. These units were never abused, and have done nothing but sat on a desk for their life-span. Now that my speakers are 2 months out of warranty, I'm kind of 'displeased' to find out I may have to order a replacement at my own cost, because the first two have had problems...
OK here is my problem. Ordered this system late June of 2005. Recentlt had to send the system back as all of a sudden there was no sound coming from the speakers. Just re-connected everything and now I have to have the module set at 50 to hear the music with any loudness?? I called tech support and they suggested I send the unit back again. Are there any other suggestions from anyone? It is a pain to send the unit back; especially since I just received it back from an earlier problem. I am extremely frustrated with this situation! Any ideas?
I sent an email to tech support directly, figured i'd post it hear, maybe get some advice or help on the problem. Good afternoon, I have been encountering problems with my system (Klipsch Pro media Ultra 5.1's) I purchased a little under a year ago from Dell.com. They referred me to you guys directly for the last problem, so I will repeat the task. There is a clicking noise coming from the sub and the sound from it, and all the speakers, is intermittently being cut in and out. To add to this, it seems that the power itself is turning off and on, and the top of the sub itself is giving off a small bit of heat. (This May be due to just the positioning of the electronics, I have not opened the box to check for a short in fear of voiding the warrenty) This is the second problem I have run into with this particular set, and I am wondering if there is a solution to it. I have been lurking in your forums for an answer, and it seems to be a common problem. As a note, about 7 months ago, I phoned in a problem with my controller unit cutting in and out, and it was handled nicely. I am hoping for a similarly pleasant experience this time. Thank you in advance for your time
I'm very angry with this company right now. I purchased a new set of 5.1 ultra's in september 2004 and just days before the warrenty was up the amp died. I took them into the repair shop (Micron electronics) that Klipsch told me to take them to and they replaced the whole amp. The repair shop didn't even call me to tell me they were fixed so after a month I called them to ask what's up. They tell me they were done the day after I brought them in. WTF??? Now I've had the amp back for 3 weeks approx and the amp has died again. What the hell is going on here? My speakers are hooked up to an "APC Back-UPS 725", my cables are all fine, no bends, broken or exposed wires anywhere. I find this completely unacceptable from a high-end company. These things cost me just over $700 (I'm in Canada) and this should not be happening to such a supposdly high-end speaker company. Is there anyway I can get all my money back? I bought it from an authorised dealer in Toronto but I'm not sure if I want to drive back down to Toronto again to drop the amp off at the repair shop and then need to go back down to pick it up if this is just going to happen again and again.
Last month i purchased the Ultra 5.1 system off Klipsch's web site. Initially i received a malfunctioning amp and the Returns department was so kind to send me a replacement. That amp arrived today proceeded to work for 10 minutes where all of a sudden for no explanation it went completely silent. No loud noise, nothing. I was playing some pop music at level 45 and after no more then 10 minutes it simply went silent. I have tried multiple times powering down and powering back up and can get nothing out of the system. I assumed the product was high priced due to the fact that Klipsch made high quality sound systems but maybe since it appears your having to replace your product up to THREE TIMES it's because your costs are threw the roof. I ordered these speakers nearly a month ago to replace a pair of Altec Lansing ADA 880s that had functions flawlessly FOR OVER FIVE YEARS. While the Promedia Ultra 5.1s fail to work for more then 10 minutes. Someone please give me a good reason to continue this apparent revolving door policy that exists at Klipsch and not just return the product? The 10 minutes of sound I got were phenomenal, but honestly this is ridiculous. I saw you quoted a 1% malfunction rate in your systems in an earlier post this week. I find that figure very hard to believe with my experience thus far. What do I do? I have contacted Klipsch again but honestly I really don’t’ want to wait ANOTHER two weeks to give this another shot. Moreover from the sounds of it I’m just spinning the roulette wheel to see if that Amp works. I really want to have faith in the product but all of this makes it very difficult for me. PS- They were hooked up to a more then adequate surge protector and I'm still getting signs of power on the control module. This makes me fairly certain it's an amp failure.
I noticed the forums are flooded with posts like these but if your gonna spend upwards of $300 i think the word needs to get out a little better then it has. Go with the Logitech Z-5500 speakers, period. I just ordered my first set of promedia's and somehow during my research missed all these things about the defective amplifier issues (why didnt i check the manufacturers forums ) Seems you never find this stuff out in alot of cases until you have the problem yourself. I got to hear these last night, and i must say they are incredible i fell in love with them at that first moment after setting them up and hearing them. Wake up this morning to no sound, thinking its a software problem i check all settings reinstall my audigy 2 drivers. Then i check this website to see if there are any known issues with the speakers, i call customer service and immediately they know its a bad amp. So here i am, no sound and waiting for a RMA number from the website i bought these from (newegg.com if anyone is curious) I've already paid the $350 and i wont get to hear this again until near the end of the month, then im left with the fear of whether or not the replacements will crap out on me. Searching the forums just for "no sound" gives me 2 pages of topics dealing with this very same issue, some dating back to 2002-03. Surely this problem hasnt existed for 2-3 years without being resolved?! I dont think i could possibly be more frustrated after seeing that. Sure these are awesome speakers, unbeatable for the PC as far as im concerned, but its not worth the hassle, its like gambling away $300+ and getting the setup home hoping your one of the lucky ones to recieve speakers that will work for some extended amount of time.
So yeah..my amp is dying..im getting the high pitch squeal, static from the speakers, and all the channels cut out but the sub. So I have this spiffy Service Plan at Best Buy and I take the speakers to them and I tell them what is happening. They send it off to service for "7-10" days...they had them for 22 days (got them back today). Upon recieveing my speakers, and I quote, "tested unit, no defect or improper operation was found to exist as not being a problem with the unit during operation of the proper kind." So I decide to try them out anyway and, low and behold, they have the high pitch noise from the second I turn them on and after 10-15 minutes of use, the static starts becomming intermittent. What should I do? Best Buy insults me by telling there is nothing wrong (apparently the people working on them have no hearing), and my factory warranty is up. Any suggestions? I assume I'll try calling Best Buy and get someone intelligent on the phone who will actually listen to what the problem is this time. :) Im beginning to not like Best Buy.
i ordered a 5.1 Ultra system and it came in about 2 hours ago. it worked fine and I was testing it out when like 10-15 min into it, it stopped. the power works because i can see that it's on but no sound comes out of it. when i turn it on i can hear a click noise from the sub, does that mean the amp is dead? i cant seem to get it to work, i tried replugging it in, tried using a diff. computer, but it still wont work. does anyone know what my problem is and how i can fix it? thanks
What can I do to be able to use my system again? I had a 2 year warranty but it has expired. It's definately the satellite amp or something as you can hear the bass but nothing is sent to the 5 satellites (which still work just fine when used on another system) thanks
i don't know what happened to my new 5.1 ultra system (about a month old) but it doesn't sound nearly as good as it did. i'm getting static at all volumes and pianos just don't come clear. they're already at the point where they are not even enjoyable. i was careful about "breaking them in" never putting them past 60 the first couple weeks i had them, then slowly allowing them to get as loud as 70, but i haven't gone over that yet and they are crappin out. i know they're covered by warranty but the thought of going without them for awhile really sucks , cause i listen to them constantly. enya and solo piano at volume 40 isn't even good anymore because it's static. piano just doesn't come through clean.
After my PM 5.1s died and were replaced under warranty, I actually thought about what I'd do if/when my new set die. I came to the conclusion that I'd buy a replacement Sub Amp and a 5.1 Surround Receiver and power my speakers that way. The speakers themselves will remain perfectly fine and should sound just as good with a decent Receiver/Sub Amp.
I purchased the PM 5.1 system about 3 years ago. Within the first year had to replace the original (appriciate the easy swap). Now, towards the end of 3 years, the system does not turn on. I tried both accessory boxes (had one from the original purchase) without success. I've checked the fuse, which is intact. I'll call the 888-554-5665 number and see what can be done.
5.1 amp diode value - My amp suffered the failure a year ago and I finally got around to looking inside. You've heard it before. A sub dies. I've been through it before when I first got this speaker system. Just out of warantee, by a tiny margin of 3 months, I have this odd sound coming from my sub. From a cold turn on, it takes about 3 - 15 seconds to make a high pitch squeal. It comes from the sub. The satelites all distort their sound when the sub squeals. It's a faint sound, not affected by the volume control. Anyways, I called and emailed.$90 bucks to repair. That would be good news to me it I could afford it right now, but unfortunately I cannot. I know so many Klipsch speaker owners, whose equipment is OLD in age, yet works. When I bought these speakers, $399 at best buy, I was positive that these would be the last set I'd ever have to buy. When I heard them I was GLAD that I'd never have a different set. Today, I hooked up a POS speaker system someone donated to me. I can't listen to these. I tried. It made me ill. Ironically these are 3 times the age as the promedia's sitting in the box in the closet, yet they work. Perhaps I was wrong about the life cycle of a multimedia speaker system. Hey, nothing lasts forever, right. But 2 years, 3 months?? Come on. I feel I HAVE to ask about this repair. Does it come with a warantee? How long will my speakers last after that? When can I expect to send them back for another repair? At what point is it time to just end the madness and settle for a tinny pair of $5 speakers? I feel ill again.
Due to the recent events regarding my pro media ultra 5.1’s, I believe I will rethink my aforementioned decision and persuade any acquaintances to do the same.
I received my PM5.1’s as a father’s day gift this year, after mentioning I would like to have a 5.1 setup for my computer. I am a World of Warcraft addict and had been told how much more enjoyable the game was with the 5.1 setup, and it was a good fit to my Audigy ZS2 Pro Platinum sound card. My wife paid cash for the set at a Best Buy store near my home. (a chain store which I refuse to do business with) I was really awestruck by the quality of sound that they produced and couldn’t have been happier with the overall quality…..until last night! I heard a click and my sound went dead. I ran diagnostics on my sound card, also plugging in my headphones, and all was well. I reached behind the sub to see if something had disconnected and all connections were intact although there was a considerable amount of heat. The volume was set at 20 and had never been higher than 35 since I received them.
I called Klipsch customer support this morning and was very surprised by the response I received. The representative was courteous and polite; she informed me I had to take the system back to the Best Buy it was purchased from for an exchange. I questioned why I had to deal with Best Buy when it was a defective product covered under warranty. I was told BB handles the warranty of the products they sell and I need to have my receipt for them to honor it. I take several issues with this:
I don’t have the receipt and the system was paid for with cash. I don’t want another system off of the shelf with the same deficiencies as the one I’m returning. I would rather mine be fixed and fixed correctly.
My speakers are mounted to brackets on the walls of my office. Why do I need to return the whole system when the problem lies within the amplification circuitry? (This is no secret and the longer you skirt the issue the more credibility you lose with customers or better yet, potential customers.)
Why are any of us having this problem? I have found forum posts dating back to 2001 with the same exact issues. Yes I know the original 5.1’s had this problem and have been discontinued, but you would think the R&D department would get that problem squared away. I would not want consumers to find similarities between a discontinued model and the new and improved one.
Spending most of my morning doing research on this subject, I have come to a hard conclusion. Klipsch, you have a serious QA problem. You have a known issue with amplifiers and are refusing to address it. You can quote whatever numbers you like, but since you are a privately owned company those numbers don’t mean crap. Anyone who halfway paid attention during marketing 101 can make whatever they want out of sales numbers. What counts in the end is the consumer’s opinion of the product that you sell, and issues such as poor amp quality in your low end products will affect your consumer base. If you can’t get the small things right, why would I trust you with the big ones? Attention to detail along with good customer support will get you a long way in whatever you do. Unfortunately, your lack of resolve with this issue has altered my opinion of Klipsch products and will ultimately affect the opinions of the company I keep. The old mantra of one person has ten friends who each have ten friends……was coined before the advent of the internet and world wide communication. Bottom line: If you can’t support your $400 products, why should anyone purchase the $2000 ones?
**after reading some of the recent posts I realize I will be flamed for my comments so let me try and address some of your posts beforehand:
Education: No, I cannot speak intelligently about amplifier design or theory and I don’t pretend to know what manufacturer is truly the best or why, but I am a rocket scientist. (Aerospace Engineer) So please nip the uneducated comments in the bud.
Bias: No, I am not directly comparing Polk and Klipsch, I am merely stating my opinions regarding craftsmanship and quality. I am 33years old and I grew up with Polk. My personal track record with them may be just luck, but I prefer to believe it is due to professionalism and attention to detail.
Forum etiquette: I am not a forum troll, but I do realize this post is extremely long. I apologize for that but I will not apologize for wanting to post my opinion. You (the reader) and I are the future of this company. The more of us they lose, the less of a future they have.
I've got what seems to be a rather unique problem, at least as far as the last 6 months of forum history goes. I got a set of ProMedia Ultra 5.1s from a local guy who was moving, and I've been having a great experience for close to a year now. Unfortunately, they've developed a problem with the center channel and subwoofer. I've done some pretty comprehensive testing to arrive at this conclusion:
- In normal use, after about 5-10 minutes the center channel drops out entirely and the sub becomes very muted. Turning off the system for a short time does not affect this, but leaving it to completely cool down (3-4 hours) helps... for a few more minutes. Front and rear channels work fine and do not experience any measurable change in volume. This is confirmed by doing an all-channel test both with my PC soundcard software and my Creative DDTS-100 in the pink-noise testing mode.
- After the center has dropped out, swapping the Center/Sub (orange) and Front (green) miniplugs on the amp inputs causes the center/sub audio to play through the two front channel satellites as expected; the sub and center channel speaker are not affected. Ditto for swapping with the Rear (black) plug.
- Swapping the speaker leads from the amp does not affect anything - whatever is connected to the Center output on the amp has no discernible volume. Connecting the center channel speaker to another output works fine, as expected. All satellites and the center channel speaker work fine when connected to one of the working channels. No speakers that I've been able to get ahold of (including speakers not from the ProMedia system) work when connected to the center channel output on the amp. I'm assuming this means that the center channel isn't putting any signal out (or at least not an amplified signal), but I don't have a multimeter handy to do a proper test and make sure.
- Plugging the center/sub inputs into another speaker system produces perfectly fine sound, as expected. The inputs are definitely good.
- Plugging/unplugging the orange miniplug (both from the amp and the input source), wiggling it in the jack, etc. etc. have no discernible effect. Running the amp with the center/sub input unplugged does not solve or delay the issue at all. Cross-connecting another input source (MP3 player, front channels, etc.) to the center/sub input does not affect the issue at all.
- This does not seem to be affected by the main volume setting on the control module; I usually run between 30 and 55 depending on the audio source, and the cutout occurs quickly no matter what the volume is set on. I haven't had the patience to do any rigorous testing to see if there is a statistical correlation. However, I have tested simply powering on the amp and not running any audio through it - the cutout seems to occur in this case as well, but after much longer (1-2 hours of idling).
- This also does not seem to be affected by the Rear, Center, or Sub volume settings on the control module. I usually listen at rear +1, center +2, sub +2, but the problem occurs within a similar timeframe even with Rear -5, Center -5, Sub -5, all 0, and various other combinations of these values.
- Changing the input source to 2.0 or 4.0 seems to have no effect (either by physically disconnecting the inputs, or by adjusting the decoder output mode).
- Once the problem starts, the master volume on the control module still works fine, but the Center, Rear, and Sub volumes don't appear to work. In some cases, the Sub volume control still works, but I have to make drastic changes to hear a difference (i.e. usually I can hear a big difference between 0 and 3, but once the cutout occurs there is very little difference between 0 and 5+).

So... I'm fairly certain that this isn't the amp itself (especially since amp issues seem to be all-or-nothing), but again lacking a multimeter I can't really guarantee that. I'm suspecting that the control module is shot, especially given the behavior of the volume controls once things cut out. Before I go hunting for a $35 replacement, though, I thought I'd check my logic and make sure that I'm suspecting the right suspect.
[edit] I should also mention that I've unplugged the mains power, air-dusted the amp itself, and tried plugging/unplugging the wired remote several times with no lasting effects.
I have the original 5.1 THX Pro Medias, purchased around '01. Couple of weeks ago, my sound started dropping out, to where I could only here a little bit of bass. If I switch it to headphone on the control pod briefly, then switch it back to speakers, the sound then works again. ( it always works on headphone). Very annoying problem.
Thinking the control pod had gone bad, I went ahead and ordered a new one from Klipsch. It worked fine the first day, then the next day the same issue is back. So evidently it was not the control pod. Sometimes the sound stays working for a few hours before dropping out, sometimes only a few minutes. Then I have to switch it to headhphone a few minutes and switch it back to get it working again. Is this a common issue with these speakers? Is it something that they would have to be sent in to be repaired? Will they eventually die out completely?
I am writing in hopes that someone from Klipsch will respond. I have a 5.1 Promedia THX system that I paid healthy hard earned $$$$ for. This is the second set I have had as the first didn't make it 24 hours. The system is about 1.5 years old and its on the blitz. Seems to be something in the amplification circuit for the speakers as the sub has never stopped working. About 3 months ago it first showed its face where all speakers except for the sub would work intermittently in and out. I unplugged the Sub and left it sit for several hours and it went to working fine again. Well as I write this its back at it again. I can disrupt the power and it will work for 30 seconds or so upon re applying power then right back to the same old no song and dance. There seems to be an issue as I have heard it from many sources and can see it on this forum as well with this product line. Is Klipch engineering doing anything about this?
This is a big $$$ set up to get something that craps out like this, /The R&D should fix it and replace any amps without question with a permanent fix. Amplification circuitry is not rocket science and I have never seen this many failures recorded for any system. The sound is superb when working but whats the use of having a ferrari with a blown engine???? BTW Sound is driven by SB Audigy 2 ZS with 64 bit FX55 CPU running win x64 although I doubt this has any bearing as the el cheapo labtecs that I have had for over ten years work fine on the set up.
It would be appreciated if someone from Klipsch would respond and give us all the real deal as to what is going on instead of leaving people out in the cold after having spent major$$ on a PC sound system. In the meantime Ill have you know tha SB output into a Harmon Kardon AVR 635 matched with Bose Acoutimass 1600 7.1 speaker system is rightous. Maybe I should see if Bose plans on going into the PC speaker business, Never heard of anyone having issues with Bose..
So i came home from work yesterday and sit down to play some world of warcraft and guess what? no sound. I turn off my speaker system, promedia 5.1 ultra, and i hear a weird sound, kinda like a sound that goes from high pitched to low pitched like a whistle. I do hear the click when i turn on the sound and my control pod works, but i get static all the time and i get the high pitched to low pitched whistle when ever i swtich from regular to headphones and from regular to off. I get no sound at all from any speaker, not even the muffled sound some people talk about. I checked the fuse, it looks ok. Unfortuanaly i bought these speakers in January of 2004 so i am about 6 months out of warranty. Any idea what could be wrong or what i can do to try to fix it?
Well... I had hoped to never have to post something like this... especially as a first post. First off, the system was incredible... just wow. And now I'm stuck using crappy altec lansing 2.1s right now I tell anyone looking for pc speakers to go Klipsch. They out perform the home theatre that is in my home, and can be heard all through, and outside my home, which is all brick.
What happened:After a power outage I went to turn them back on and the pod did nothing, no numbers, no bass thump that I regularly receive when I turn it on.After fiddling with the pod in horror and disbelief I calmed myself (not really, I was... unhappy) and unplugged the rear channels, and sound card hookups from the sub/amp.Once again, I tried the control pod, and nothing. At this point I unhooked everything from it, drug it to another room and power outlet with just the power cord and pod, still the same thing. So I just emailed Amy about it, and am hoping I can get it fixed free of any charges very quickly.
Also, I am guessing from previous posts, they will have me unscrew the amp from the woofer box? And won't that degrade sound performance screwing a fixed amp back on?
year and 3 months and they are dead =( any word on a new set coming out anytime soon? I'm guessing no cuz I've found no official information. Definitely not dorpping any more money on this set, but I'd be interested in new version.
I have the ProMedia Ultra 5.1 system... My control center (i believe thats what you call it, the thing with the volume knob and REAR, CENTER, and SUB) is acting very wierd. I keep it on about 40 with my computer adjust 3/4. It keeps changing the volume by itself. i am not hitting it and all connections are secure. what it wrong?

First off, this 5.1 system is amazing - loving it. I do get hiss from the speakers (even when not connected to the computer) and I'll mess w/it a bit, but I honestly don't mind - can't really hear it. what I can hear, and what has me concerned is the whine the subwoofer makes. I can hear it when there is voice, or quiet music coming from the speakers. When the subwoofer is turned off, you can hear the whine sort of...die (sounds weird), so I know it is in the sub. I really don't want to return them, i'm willing to put up with the whine. I tried putting a blanket over the sub to dull the noise, but only left it on a short amount of time, as I really didn't want have the blanket ignite :-P.
Promedia51 RIP, Where to repair?
Yes as the rest of you Mine are now laid to rest, So how do you go about getting the amp repaired or is there a do it yourself repair faq somewhere???
Hello Klipsch peoples. My Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 speakers are not working (sorry that my first post is a negative!). At first I thought possibly my amp was dead like so many others, but now I'm not sure. It may be the control tower. Here are the details: -Purchased these speakers in January 2003. Could have gotten the Logitec "equivalent" for $100 cheaper from a family member who worked at BB and got at a discount, but these were oh so much better sounding.-For the first year or so, everything was fine. Then, the control tower volume control started getting flaky. I'd turn the knob up gently, and sometimes the volume would go down, or vice versa. But, it still worked right most of the time. -Then, about half a year ago, the volume stopped changing once in a while. I'd turn the knob and the number would change, but the speaker volume would not change. If I messed with it a bunch, it would eventually let out a noise like they just turned on and change to the current volume level. I set it higher than I normally liked (about 40, I used my computer in my basement with other people around), and used the system volume to control the volume (usually).-About two weeks ago, I tried to play some music, and nothing came out. The i turned up the system volume on my computer and can hear my music faintly. it teases me. But the volume will not go up. I thought maybe the amp had died, but then I tried listening with headphones, and it is all quiet on them as well, and the volume does not work. Does this sound like a bad control tower? Amp issue?
No sound from PMU 5.1s :
I have had these speakers for almost a year, and last night, while my computer was off, they died. They were working before I went to bed. This morning when I woke up, the only sound I could get from them was a click when I turn them on, and again when I turn them off. I purchased them from BB, but they were the display model (only set left), so they are unwilling to work with me. Is there anything I can do to fix them myself, since I am a poor college kid? Or would they still be under warranty since they are less then a year old, even though I bought them as a display model? I don't want to be mean and say "Klipsch is awful!" since they broke, because in fact I think the speakers are wonderful, and there is no other set in existance that I think could fill their place for me, despite the fact they seem somewhat unreliable. I just want to know what it will take to fix them. Being the weekend, I thought I might get quicker feedback from someone in the know here. Thanks for any help.
Hey everyone I've had my Promedia 5.1's for just one day now. After playing Half Life 2 for about 2 hours, they just cut out all of the sudden. Nothin has sound now, music games or movies. The volume control still turns on and everything, but the speakers dont pop when I turn it on, the amp just makes a click, and makes a whirring/buzz sound when i turn it off. My guess is the amp is dead, anyone else have any input? I never even had the volume up all the way, it was only on 30-35 the whole time. Thanks for any help everyone!
I had my 5.1 about 2 years the volume tower always did freak out when turning it up and down. then later the volume tower and bass box power would go off . i would shake the the box a lil it come back on like 2 weeks ago i moved to my new house and sound does not work at all. the bass comes throu but not sound if i turn it to 80 sound i can barly hear sounds like loud popping sounds so i turn back down. i can hear sound out off bass box better then speakers. i tried replacing speaker wire stilll no luck. i pluged head phones in the volume tower and switched the mode to head phones and it works fine. any got a clue how to fix this prob?
hello, my amp has died in my 5.1's i've owned them for like 3 years so i dont think they are under warrenty anymore :( my question is for canadian residents how much does it cost to get the amp repaired and is there a canadian company that could do it, cause shipping is mighty expencive, thx for any help
I think I've lost the amp
From what I can figure out the amplifier for my Klipsh Ultra 5.1 Pro media has died. From what I can figure out the amplifier for my Klipsh Ultra 5.1 Pro media has died.
1. Actually only muffled sound form the subwoofer.
2. Checked all the connections and settings, disconnected for a while, no difference.
3. I do get the "pop" when I turn it on.
4. I get sound with other speakers out of the sound board.
Is this it? What is my next step, bought from Best Buy less than a year ago. Doing a search in the forum and got the clue from the muffled sound that the amp may have done. Amy, any help? I'm sorry this is the first post, forced out of lurking.
One day I came home and there was zero sound from the sub. All the satellite speakers work fine, the fuse isn't blown, and there's nothing wrong with my soundcard or any software. When a song with a lot of bass is played and I turn the volume up enough the sub emits a really strained rumble. Nothing is blown as far as I can tell. I thought maybe it's a problem with the amp or the resistor like many others here have been saying, If this is the case, would it be cheaper to take it to a speaker repair store or to send it into Klipsch for repair?
My Promedia THX 5.1's aren't working correctly. I've been looking around for an answer to this and it seems this is the best place to look. I bought these speakers back in March of 2002 from Newegg for $400 and I think the sound quality is great. For some reason I am now having an issue where all sound will cut out except for a slight mumbling noise in the Sub. When I unplug the power or turn it off for a few moments and then turn it back on it seems to work again for a little while, but eventually starts doing this strange mumbling noise again. I've tried 2 different sound cards, both of which I know work and no luck. I also put in headphones into the green port on my Audigy2 ZS and there is sound coming from it. I have everything plugged into an APC Backups Pro 1000 so I'm fairly certain it's not from a surge.
I've been reading these multiple posts about the dead amp. I too have a dead/dying amp with my 5.1's. I've owned these speakers for 3 years now. I had to send them into Klipsch during the 1st year of ownership and they replaced them. Now, my sub/amp has died, with the usual symptoms everyone else has already mentioned. I know that there is only a 1 yr warrenty on these speakers. My question is this: Amy, do you know what kind of price am I looking for in terms or repairing/replacing this woofer through Klipsch (not including shipping)? I'm frustrated right now regarding this issue, especially since I never abused these speakers or even allowed them to reach their potential (living in an apartment with thin walls)
I ordered MY klipsch ultra 5.1 but after i opened it just 1 hour so they stop working.Would i have to pay for shipping under Klipsch's warranty to get the subwoofer amp fixed? This wasn't my fault, and I would hate to have to pay expensive shipping for parts that should be working fine in the first place. I am covered under the 1yr warranty yes?i bought it from Amazon.com on 8/22/05What should i do?
Sometimes when I'm listening to music my subwoofer will just cut out! Usually I can modify the subwoofer value on the control panel (-9 to 15, I just put it up or down a few notches) and the subwoofer kicks back in, but this last time, that didn't seem to help. I've checked all my connections multiple times and everything seems to be plugged in.
5.1 Promedia THX Speaker Problems
I have a Promedia 5.1 (SN 02-E-03416##-0) attached to my Santa Cruz Turtle Beach 5.1 sound card. I've the system has been functioning properly until recently. The only sound I am receiving out of the "Volume Control" apparatus that came with the system is playing through the headphone jack only. When I depress the speaker button control, I loose sound from the system entirely. Is it possible to replace the volume contol apparatus itself, or might there be a problem with the subwoofer? I have run a diagnostic check on the sound card and it is functioning correctly. The speakers are also plugged in appropriately.
I ordered my 5.1 ultras on 8/1/05 and today 8/22 they stopped working. I was gone for one day and when i was back, the speakers refused to produce sound. The headphone plug still works, but when i press the power button i get a slight click coming from the Subwoofer (the amp dead?) instead of the usual pop of a healthy power on.
Gosh, this is so darn annoying. I spent so much money on this too.
Would i have to pay for shipping under Klipsch's warranty to get the subwoofer amp fixed? This wasn't my fault, and I would hate to have to pay expensive shipping for parts that should be working fine in the first place.
Arggh, sorry i am really frustrated right now. It was a pretty big investment for me and my old 4.1 promedias survived for 3 years before they started to die out. What should I do now?
Three years ago, two friends and myself all got built new PC's, and each of us chose Klipsch Promedia 5.1's for our speaker systems. About a year and a half ago, the first of te three went dead, seems that the amp in the sub just died or something. He was lucky, cause he bought his from Best Buy, and got the replacement warranty. Myself and the other of our trio bought ours online, and within the past 3 months, Both of our speaker systems had the same issue. this really seems like something that should be covered under warranty, as it seems to be a greatly recurring issue.
What can I do to get them repaired / replaced ?
Amy, can you help me out with some info please? My games just aren't the same using inferior 2.1 sound /pout
Hi,I think my amp just died out of nowhere, this morning. But I don't know why....I wasn't even doing anything, just replying to emails. I was playing games an hour before, with no problems, then I stopped to do a techsupport email and a forum, and I then went to load up a MP3 and there was no sound playing. When I turn on the audio pod, all I hear is a "click" from the sub, and nothing from the sats, instead of the normal "thump" type sound you usually get when you turn on a powered speaker. I've had the speakers 3 weeks. Normal volume was 50-65% on the audio pod, 50% master on Audigy2, 100% Wav. Now i know I can simply go to Best Buy and get an exchange under their 1 year special policy, however I am worried that the amp will simply die again on the next set. I feel bad, too; it was a great sub :( Since it's usually a small part of the amp that has died (a burnt out resistor, from what I've seen in older threads), is there any way I can get Klipsch to fix the amp permanently (with a resistor/circuit that won't fail), instead of just getting another sub that might potentially fail again later? It would be great to have a permanent fix instead of a possibly temporary one where the amp could fail again. :)
Alright I couldn't find anyone witha situation like mine, so sorry if this is a repost. My computer alarm clock went off this morning and I went to turn it off, but on my way to the PC the power went out. It came on a second later but I could not get any sound out of my speakers. These are plugged in through a APC surge protector also. I tried unplugging them, and I tried hooking them up to a cd player to make sure it was not my computer. I can hear a click in the enclosure when turn it on and off but Im not getting any response. Im assuming from what I have read here that the amp might have died. Now I bought these at Best Buy less than 6 months ago but I do not have the box and S/N anymore. What can I do? If it is the amp is there a fuse or anything I can replace?
Bought the system new in 01 or 02?, had one minor problem with the front left channel that seemed to work itself out. Came in today for a BF2 session, no sound. Uninstalled/reinstalled Audigy drivers, codecs, etc, which I knew better than to do before I tested the output on the sound card, but after 30 min I realized it wasn't software. Dug out a set of headphones and tested the headphone jack and soundcard. I have sound at those two points. I then realized I wasn't getting the normal noise when I shut the speakers off, and figured out my amp died. Everything has been connected to an APC Smart UPS 1500, so no surge hit it. 4 years of superior sound, now what? 5 speakers and a dead amp :(
no sound
After awhile the sound just stops. When i shut it down, and leave it shut-down 4 sometime, then start it back-up, sound comes back on. Is there a download I can get to resolve this ?
Just brought it home and hooked it up to my NF4 Ultra-d motherboard. I am not getting any sound out of the front left and right but I get sound out of the center when I run test. What could cause this problem?
I just bought a Ultra 5.1 system, but the unit won't power on after I connected all the cables. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thanks!
oh nooooooooo
just got my set of refurbed 5.1 on friday. finished hooking everything up. plugged in the volume control to amp, plugged in amp...nothing. volume control does not light up, no pwer .unplugged and replugged. now what. should i send whole thing back or could it be volume control or is amp dead and can that just be replaced. help, suggestions please...
Many of u seem very knowledgable about the Promedia 5.1 speakers. I'm afraid that I've got the amp problem that some seem to have experienced. I can hear fine in HP mode using my headphones from the volume module, but I don't get any sound whatsoever from my other speakers when not in HP mode. When things were working, I could turn on my module, and hear the "thump" from the subwoofer, but know I only hear a "click" -- and no sound.I bought the speakers a couple of years ago at Circuit City, and they've performed very well up until recently. Most likely the warranty is out, so I was just wondering what my options were. Thanks in advance.... I also tried emailing Amy, but I'm not sure if the email went through or not....
i have the promedia 5.1's. like many others, i have the problem where after a few minutes of use all sound will cut out except for murmuring in the sub. the satellites seem to work just fine hooked up elsewhere, and the bass works too (i think, since i can hear sound from it). since it's the amp inside the sub that's broken, is there a way for me to use the speakers by buying something? like, if i get a reciever, can i hook up the sub to it? or would i have to buy another sub. i really don't want to have to get it repaired only to have it break again, and i really do like these speakers. i know it sounds like im beating a dead horse but most of the solutions on the forum seem to just involve getting it fixed or just tossing it for new speakers. on a side note, if my solution would work, anyone have any suggestions? keep in mind i'm just a college kid so my options are limited (hence the not wanting to go through the hassle of replacing the amp)
First of let me say that I think the Promedia 5.1 speakers are great. However, this is almost more than I can take from a company.
I purchased a set of Promedia 5.1 speakers in late 2001 and the amp died mid 2003. Thankfully the 1 year warranty on these systems had been extended due to to how common this problem was so I was able to contact Klipsch and RMA the set for a set of the new Promedia 5.1 Ultras by late 2003. Now it is getting close to 2 years since I have had the Ultras and once again the amp has died with the exact same symptoms. I have debated just tossing the amp out of the inclosure and buying a stand alone amp to power the system, but I have decided to contact Customer Service and see what they can do for me. If it comes down to paying to ship in the system and get it repaired I will most likely not do it. What is the point if I will just have to do the same thing in a year and a half?
Thanks for the couple years of good speakers Klipsch.
So what's the deal with all of these people with dead amps? When are they dying for people, the ones that aren't doa? When you have the volumn up to 70+, or when you're using them conservetively? I don't understand how an amp could just die under none-stressful situations... Unless they were poorly designed in the first place, but then why aren't everyone's blowing out of the box? I'd like to hear what the people were doing when their amps died, if they remember :)
