Due to his expertise as miner with the pick and shovel, William in common with a lot of miners was transferred to the Royal Engineers and attached to 176th Tunnelling Company. Sadly he would meet his end in underground combat with his German counterparts.

 

 

Sapper Hynd, a Londoner would survive the war an immigrate to the United States.
