Gunner Stanslaw Scortolskis was one of hundreds of Lithuanians or Russian Poles are they were known locally, who immigrated to Newtongrange to work in the pit.
He was one of four Lithuanians to die for his adopted country and was killed in the final push for victory , when the artillery frequently had to deploy in the open.
