Canal Boat Holiday

We went on a canal boat holiday in Nottingham.  The boat was very, very lovely and the bed was too!  We fed the ducks, there were a lot!  The bath was square, so we could only have a small bath!  When we came out of the boat we kept wobbling!  We ate in the boat but it was very cramped so sometimes we went out to eat.  I helped Dad drive and I helped Mum with the locks.  The lock gates were very heavy but I enjoyed doing it.  I enjoyed staying on the boat and loved playing the board games we'd taken with us, especially one called "Who's the Richest?".  B

In November we went on a canal boat holiday in Nottingham.  Nottingham is in the Midlands and is North West of where we live.  The boat was at Sawley Marina and there were lots of locks to do which were very heavy!  When we went to Nottingham Castle I bought a little toy rabbit called Gulliver.  We also went to Nottingham Lace and saw all the beautiful lace.  It was strange when the boat rocked about and when we got off it we moved about as if we were still on the boat!  K

Haiku

Haiku is a type of Japanese poetry which describes, in 17 syllables, nature or a fleeting moment.  The first line, with five syllables, sets the scene.  The second, with seven, tells us more.  The third line, with five, is a line from the heart.  Here's B's Haiku about one of his favourite pastimes!

I love Playstation,
Game about Micro Machines,
Little cars racing!

Model Horse Tack

These are my favourite bridles that I have made:

Milton's bridle       In-hand bridle     Milton's rosette

Model Horse Custom

Here are some photos of a model horse I customised recently:

He is called Marmite.  I have painted him Bay and made him a new tail out of some special clay called Milliput.  I also made his neck thicker with Milliput.  The last photo shows his mane.  K

Michael Palin's "Around the World in Eighty Days"

We have been learning about Michael Palin's "Around the World in Eighty Days".  I enjoyed learning about Japan.  Here is a bit of information on this country.

Japan is in the continent of Asia.  Bonsai Trees (trees that are trimmed so they keep small) come from Japan.  In Japan things are very neat, like the Bonsai.

Mount Fuji is an active volcanoe in Japan and it's name means "everlasting life".  Japan experiences volcanoes and earthquakes because it sits on three tectonic plates.  K

I enjoyed learning about Italy in this topic.  The capital city of Italy is Rome and it is in the continent is Europe.  Did you know that pizza goes back to ancient times, but pizza as we know it began in Naples?

In Italian the word purple is "porpora" and blue is "blu"!  B

K's favourite recipe - Chocolate Rock Buns

This is a simple recipe that K and B are able to make and bake themselves.  The buns are delicious.

125g/4oz unsalted butter/baking margarine (chilled and cubed)
250g/8oz self-raising flour
125g/4oz granulated sugar
60g/2oz milk chocolate chopped into small pieces
1 egg, 2-3 tablespoons milk, pinch of salt

Preheat oven to 180 degrees C/350 degrees F/gas 4 and grease a couple of baking sheets.  Rub in the butter/margarine and flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.  Stir in the salt, sugar and chocolated pieces, then add the egg and mix well with a fork.  Add the milk and continue to mix together.  Divide into small piles on the greased baking sheets.  Bake for 15-20 minutes (less for fan oven) or until golden in colour.

Club Penguin

Club Penguin is an interactive website where you can talk to other people.  This is the website address:  www.clubpenguin.com and my penguin is called Bloopurple.  You can play games to earn coins and when you pay to be a member you can buy clothes and things for your igloo.  You can also buy pets called Puffles, you can get red, blue, purple, pink and black ones!  Members can get all of the Puffles, but non-members can only get red and blue ones!  There are different places to go to on Club Penguin to meet your friends or buddies!  You can also change your penguin colour!  The games are Sled, Ice Fishing, Thin Ice, Astro Barrier, Jet Pack, Ballistic Biscuit, Find Four and Mancala.  On Jet Pack, you need to find coins flying on a jet pack and there are five levels.  The cave is the hardest part (levels four and five), and I have finished all the levels!  K

Model Horse Live Show

In October I went to a Model Horse Live Show, here are some photos:

Partbred class                American Breeds class

Judging                        Muffin with some prizes

I painted these models during the lunch break

For each class, everyone put their models that were to enter that class on a table and then the judge judges the class!  The model horses that win first or second place go into a Championship Class.  K

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The main characters were Charlie and his Grandpa.  Charlie won a golden ticket to go into Mr. Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.  He makes chocolates and sweets.  Some other people went too and my favourtie character was Augustus Gloop!  I liked him because he was very large!  The Oompa Loopas helped make the chocolates and sweets, they were mini people.  The other people were taken out of the factory because they were greedy and wanted to know lots of things.  In the end, Willy Wonka gave Charlie the Chocolate Factory as his prize.  Charlie had to look after the factory with his family.  He was very happy because he loved chocolate!  I liked the story because it was funny, and I enjoyed drawing a storyboard.  B

Horses in History

During this term we ran a session for the local home education group on the topic of "horses in history".  When researching this theme we were amazed at how often horses had taken an important role in historical events.  Here are the chosen horses in history that we covered in the session.  E

Alexander the Great and his horse Bucephalus
His horse was afraid of shadows so we produced shadow puppet shows.

Capital Miles Keogh and his horse Comanche
Comanche was part of Cluster's 7th Cavalry which fought and survived several battles, including a battle with Native American Indians at "Little Big Horn".  We made Indian head dresses, tipees, Tribal Wands and learnt about the painted symbols the Native American Indians painted on their horses.

Horses of the Bayeaux Tapestry
William the Conquerer's half brother Odo commissed the tapestry to be made after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, it featured many horses.  We made a Bayeaux Tapestry collage using different materials.

Horses of the Medieval Era
Horses were used for battles, crusades and jousting touraments during this era.  We made pipe-cleaner knights using tin foil, beads and decorations for swords and shields.

Pegasus
Pegasus is a famous winged horse from a Greek myth.  We printed off several outlines of Pegasus for collage and colouring.  K

We hope you've enjoyed reading just a small selection of work K and B have completed this last term.
