We have just come to the end of our first year of educating at home and are looking forward to continuing along this route. It took us about a term to find our feet and settle into a routine of learning and socialising. K (10), B (7) and I find our new way of learning is good fun and very rewarding (although it is hard work at times)!
At present we do not follow a set curriculum and we are not completely autonomous either! The children frequently throw out questions which can cover any topic, so after an initial answer to keep them temporarily satisfied I may try and follow up that question with further information to see if they show any additional interest in that particular subject. So far we have tried to cover a topic each half term/term. We are amazed at the amount of learning we have covered over the last year and as the children have shown an interest in studying these topics, they find it easier to retain what they have learnt. Next year we will endeavour to discover different cultures and understand more of the world we live in as we have covered quite a bit of History this last year! When you look more closely through the site, you'll begin to see how we operate. I found drawing together a simple "plan" for the week helped keep things progressing, but quite often areas of the "plan" didn't come to fruition because the children had provided their own source of "work".
I hope you'll find this site helpful, whether you are thinking of home educating your child/ren, are an established home edder or just need some inspiration for homework.
To give you more of an insight into our family life (mainly) through home education, please see our blog (an online diary) which is updated regularly.
