  • Gilwell Meeting: On Thursday, November 12th, 2009 - 7:00 pm at St. Mark's United Church (corner of Holland Ave. & Aldborough St.) the Gilwellians are having a meeting to discuss our direction for the next year. We are inviting all Gilwellian members both past and present, even if you are not currently registered with a group or Scouts Canada to attend. We are looking at ways in which we may be able to increase the size of our group. This will give us the opportunity to hold more social events throughout the year and also have a bigger contingent at the annual Gilwell Reunion. Hope to see a lot of you there?

I am contacting to see if the scouting groups and leaders in the Elgin area would be interested in our “Outdoor Floating Classroom”.

What we do is use rafts to teach from, as we stop along the way to do tree identification, edible plants, fish & wildlife, starlight constellation paddles and aboriginal history. The great thing about the rafts is that all ages can do a river learning experience in total safety.

We are called the Grand River Rafting Company, located 90 minutes east of  you, just off the 403 Highway near Paris on the Grand River.

We also offer overnights with private campsites right on the river for up to 60 people… which you can paddle to… we do basic canoe and kayak instructional river trips as well.

With us you can choose your own starting time or tell us what type of experience you would like to create… and we can customize that to fit your time frame with a reasonable cost quote.

Here are links to two of our trips done in a photo story board fashion.

If we can be of any further assistance… please knock on our door… we would love to show you the valley!

PS:  We have been clarifying that the Scouts Canada liability works with us so that waivers are not required. And that has been clarified… the Scout Canada Indemnification Agreement works between both parties.

Let's keep Camp Timken for the kids not only in Elgin, but in the surrounding Areas as well. So Let's Use It, Don't Lose It.

  BP Guild      http://www.canadianbpguilds.org/

As a member of the 20th BP Guild in London, I have been asked to look into the possibility of starting a Guild in Elgin Area. This international organization has been developed for Scouters who are no longer active with a group on a day-to-day basis, but might be interested in ocassionally working as a resource person, or working on service projects, fundraising events or helping out at Area camps or fun days, or just getting together as a group for social occasions such as Euchre parties, bowling, dinner and a movie, etc. Service with the Guild counts, and is added to service time with Scouts Canada and permits members who have their Gilwell scarf and beads to attend the annual Gilwell Reunions. If there is enough interest an organizational meeting can be planned. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please contact Forbes Smith at (519) 631-2602 or e-mail: smithru12@sympatico.ca
