The descendants of Isildur's line survived in the wilds of Middle Earth and were known as Rangers. Aragorn is known by many names; Strider, the Dunedain, Elessar, and several others besides. He is chief of the Dunedain in the North.
Bearing the broken shards of Elendil's sword (Narsil), Aragorn meets the hobbits in the village of Bree and accompanies them to Rivendell. He becomes part of the Company of the Ring, and there, the 'blade that was broken' is reforged and renamed 'Anduril'
which means 'Flame of the West'.
With Boromir, son of the Gondor steward, Aragorn helps save the Fellowship on Caradhras, and becomes their leader after Gandalf falls in Moria. With the breaking of the Fellowship at Parth Galen, Aragorn - along with Legolas and Gimli - turn toward Isengard as they follow the captured Merry and Pippin. In time, after being reunited with Gandalf and seeing Isengard's destruction, Aragorn wrenches the recovered Palantir to his will and chooses to take the Paths of the Dead.
With him go Legolas, Gimli, some of the returned Dúnedain, and the Sons of Elrond. As rightful heir, Aragorn calls on the Dead to aid him, and they journey on to capture the fleet at Pelargir. He eventually arrives in Minas Tirith with a large army, and this turns the tide in the Battle of the Pellanor Fields. As Captain of the army of the West, Aragorn then rides into Mordor to challenge Sauron. After the War of the Ring and Sauron's defeat, Aragorn finally takes his rightful place as King of the Reunited Kingdom. He weds Arwen Evenstar, daughter of Elrond, whom he had loved for much of his life. Elrond would not permit their marriage until Aragorn had reclaimed the throne.
Aragorn, King Elessar, ruled for six-score years in great glory and happiness. He and Arwen had one son and several daughters. In the hour of his death, he bid his beloved wife farewell, and handed the kingdom over to their son, Eldarion.

Legolas (who's name meant "green leaf") was the son of Thranduil, the Sindar King of Northern Mirkwood. The date of Legolas birth is never given by Tolkien. Many Tolkien scholars speculate that his birth was likely around the same time as Arwens (who was born 241 Third Age), which would make Legolas approximately 2778 years old during the War of the Ring.
Tolkien describes Legolas: He was tall as a young tree, lithe, immensely strong, able swiftly to draw a great war-bow and shoot down a Nazgul, endowed with the tremendous vitality of Elvish bodies, so hard and resistant to hurt that he went only in light shoes over rock or through snow, the most tireless of all the Fellowship." (from The Book of Lost Tales, II)
Legolas journeyed to Rivendell in 3018 of the Third Age for the Council of Elrond. He was sent by his father, Thranduil, to carry the ill tidings that Gollum whom the Mirkwood elves had held prisoner had escaped.
Chosen by Elrond as one of the Nine Walkers of the Fellowship of the Ring, Legolas set out from Rivendell with the Company of the Ring. His keen Elf eyes, his woodland skills and his deadly bow all proved of great value tot eh Fellowship in their many adventures. During the journey, he became close friends with Gimli the dwarf, a friendship that would last all his days.
After Boromir's death, and the breaking of the Fellowship, he journeyed with Aragorn and Gimli through the southern lands of Middle Earth in search of the captured hobbits, Merry and Pippin. They then went onward to fight at the Battle of the Hornburg (Helms Deep), then travelled the Paths of the Dead , where Aragorn freed the Oathbreakers. From there the group, accompanied by the Dead of Dunharrow, traveled south to Pelargir and fought a battle that won them control of the Corsair ship fleet. They then sailed to Minas Tirith, where Legolas fought with his companions in the Battle of the Pelennor fields. He then marched as representative of the Elves with the Captains of the West to the Morannon, the Black Gate of Mordor.
Once the War of the Ring ended and Sauron was finally defeated, Legolas held his friend Gimli to a bargain they had made at Helms Deep: he accompanied the dwarf to the Glittering Caves of Aglarond, and Gimli traveled with him into Fangorn forest. Eventually, Legolas led a group of elves to dwell into Ithilien, where they made that land fair once more.
'And I,' said Legolas, 'shall walk in the woods of this fair land (Ithilien), which is rest enough. In days to come, if my Elven-lord allows, some of our folk shall remove hither; and when we come it shall be blessed, for a while.'
After the death of King Aragorn, Legolas built a ship and eventually passed over the Sea in 120 of the Fourth Age, taking with him Gimli the dwarf to the Undying Lands. The departure of Legolas and Gimli brought an end to the Fellowship in Middle Earth.

Frodo was born in 2968 of the Third Age, the son of Drogo Baggins and Primula Brandybuck. Orphaned in child-hood (his parents were killed in a boating accident) he was adopted by his cousin, Bilbo Baggins of Bag End, and made his heir.
Frodo was extremely adventurous for a Hobbit and remarkably learned, being something of a song-writer and a scholar of Elvish lore and language.
In 3001, when Bilbo mysteriously left the Shire, Frodo inherited Bag End and the One Ring.
In 3018, Gandalf the Wizard reappeared, sharing with Frodo what he had learned about the Ring's history. On Gandalf's advice, Frodo departed the Shire with the Ring. He was accompanied by Sam, Pippin, and soon, Merry. The four were joined by Strider in Bree. Frodo was wounded by a Morgul blade at Weathertop, and barely made it to Rivendell alive. There, he was healed by Elrond, and the Fellowship of the Ring was formed.
Frodo just survived the many adventures and perils of the journey. In Moria, he was again saved from death thanks to the mithril shirt given him by Bilbo.
At Amon Hen, Frodo was confronted by Boromir, who attempted to take the Ring from him. Frodo fled, and the Fellowship was broken. He was joined by Sam, and the two of them set out for Mordor. They were soon joined by Gollum, who led them to Cirith Ungol. Frodo succeeded in delievering the One Ring to the fires of Mount Doom, and there lost a finger when Gollum attempted to recover the Ring. Both Gollum and the Ring fell into the Fire, thus bringing about the end of the War of the Ring.
After the war, he returned to Bag End with Sam, Merry, and Pippin, and won back their homeland from Saruman. The poison wounds and the mental trauma he experienced during the Quest began to tell, and Frodo was never quite the same.
In 3021, Frodo embarked on the Last Riding of the Keepers of the Rings, boarded an Elven ship, and sailed to the Undying Lands.

In the Undying Lands, Gandalf was a Maia spirit, Olórin, who lived in the gardens of Lórien, and often visited Nienna the Compassionate. About the year 1000 of the Third Age of the Sun, he was chosen as one of the Istari, or Wizards, that were sent to Middle-Earth.
Called Gandalf the Grey in Westron, he was Mithrandir, or 'Grey Pilgrim' to the Elves, Tharkûn to the Dwarves, and Incánus to the Haradrim. His outward form was that of a bearded old man dressed in a grey cloak with a tall pointed hat and a long staff.
Upon his arrival at the Grey Havens, Cirdan gave him Narya, the "ring of fire". For over two thousand years, Gandalf worked against the rising evil powers on Middle Earth.
In 2941, Gandalf inspired the Quest of the Lonely Mountain that resulted in the slaying of Smaug the Dragon. During this quest, Gandalf acquired the sword Glamdring, and Bilbo Baggins acquired the One Ring.
In 3018, Gandalf came to Frodo Baggins in the Shire and initiated the Quest of the Ring. In Rivendell, he became one of the Fellowship of the Ring and led them through menay perils. Then, upon the bridge of Khazad-dûm, Gandalf fell in mortal conflict with the Balrog of Moria.
However, the Wizards spirit was resurrected and empowered (by Illuvatar) as Gandalf the White. During the War of the Ring, Gandalf the White on his horse, Shadowfax, was everwhere: inspiring King Théoden in Rohan, vanquishing Saruman in Isengard, holding back the Witch-King at the gates of Minas Tirith, and fighting with the captains of the Army of the West before the Black Gates of Mordor.
After the War, Gandalf oversaw the reuniting of Gondor and Arnor, then in 3021 embarked on the Last Sailing of the Keepers of the Rings to the Undying Lands.
He is portrayed by Sir Ian McKellen in NewLine Cinema's production of "Lord of the Rings" |

Peregrin Took - Hobbit of the Shire.
Peregrin Took was born in 2990 of the Third Age, the son of Paladin Took II (of Great Smials) and Eglantine Banks. He is Frodo's cousin, and the youngest of the Fellowship companions.
At Gandalf's urging, Pippin was chosen as one of the nine members of the Company of the Ring. Along with Merry Brandybuck, Pippin was separated from the Company at Parth Galen, and the two hobbits were captured by orcs. They eventually escaped into Fangorn Forest, where they met Treebeard and the Ents.
Despite some 'errors in judgement' during the journey (these being tossing a stone into a well in Moria, and sneaking a peek into the Palantir), Pippin proved his worth during the War of the Ring. Along with Merry, he was responsible for the crucial deed of rousing the Ents of Fangorn Forest. Later, after traveling to Gondor with Gandalf, Pippin offered his sword in service to the city's steward, Denethor II. His greatest deed, perhaps, was being instrumental in saving the life of the Steward's son, Faramir.
After the War of the Ring, Peregrin inherited the title Thain of the Shire. He remained in close contact with Gondor, and built a great library at Great Smials. The works he collected dealt mostly with the history of Númenor and the Exiles after its Downfall. The Tale of Years was likely prepared at Great Smials, with the help of Merry Brandybuck. Pippin married Diamond of Long Cleeve, and his son was named Faramir Took I.
In 1484, Pippin (along with Merry) traveled to Gondor, and spent his remaining years there. Upon his death, Pippin was laid to rest in Rath Dinen. In 1541, King Elessar passed away, and the beds of both Merry and Pippin were set beside the king's own.

His closest friend was Legolas, Prince of Mirkwood.
After Boromir's death, and the breaking of the Fellowship, he journeyed with Aragorn and Legolas through the southern lands of Middle Earth in search of the captured hobbits, Merry and Pippin. Boromir- Dúnedain lord of Gondor.
The name Boromir is said to mean faithful jewel
Boromir was born in 2978 Third Age to Denethor II, the ruling steward of Gondor, and Finduilas. He is the elder of two brothers, Faramir being the younger. While awaiting the return of a true heir, the people of Gondor have appointed Stewards to rule.
In 3018, he valiantly lead the defense of Osgiliath against Sauron's forves.
After a prophetic dream that he shared with his brother, he travelled to Rivendell in hopes of learning the meaning of the dream, one that seems to foretell the return of Isildurs Bane, which killed Isildur (heir to Gondor). During the Council of Elrond, he learns that Frodo the Hobbit now possesses the One Ring.
His belief is that the Ring should be used to defend Gondor, which has been under attack from Sauron for generations. The Council appoints Boromir as one of the Fellowship, a representative of Men along with Aragorn.
In a dream I saw the eastern sky grow dark, but in the west, a pale light lingered. A voice was crying: 'Your doom is at hand: Isildur's Bane is found! (Boromir, at the Council)
Despite doubt, Boromir proves a valuable comrade. On the mountain of Caradhras, he aids Aragorn in saving the lives of the Fellowship by forging a path through the heavy snow. He fought valiantly in the mines of Moria.
He endured many perils of the Felloship's journey as far as Amon Hen, near Raurus Falls, he was overcome by the desire to seize the One Ring.. When his attempts to coax the ring from Frodo fail, Boromir attempted to take it by force. Frodo manages to flee, Boromir immediately realized the horrible truth of what he tried to do and soon repented his actions.
Boromir, his madness gone now, comes to the defense of Merriadoc and Peregrin, sounding the great horn of Gondor to signal he needs aid. He bravely defended the hobbits, but was mortally wounded by many arrows. As a result, Merry and Pippin are captured by Orcs.
'Aragorn knelt beside him. Boromir opened his eyes and strove to speak. At last slow words came. "I tried to take the Ring from Frodo," he said. "I am sorry. I have paid." His glance strayed to his fallen enemies; twenty at least lay there. "They have gone: the Halflings: the Orcs have taken them. I think they are not dead. Orcs bound them." He paused and his eyes closed wearily. After a moment he spoke again. "Farewell, Aragorn! Go to Minas Tirith and save my people! I have failed." "No!" said Aragorn, taking his hand and kissing his brow. "You have conquered. Few have gained such a victory. Be at peace! Minas Tirith shall not fall!
After the Breaking of the Fellowship, Boromir was given a formal ship-burial over the Raurus Falls in an Elvish ship, gifted by the Celeborn and Galadriel.

The Nazgul were the nine servants of Sauron. They are also called 'Black Riders', 'Ringwraiths', 'The Nine', and other names besides. They were once great kings and sorcerers of Men, and some of them had been Numenoreans. They were given nine rings, which Sauron then used to ensnare their wills through the One Ring, and they became as shadows. The Witch-King is head of the Nazgul. He took this title in mid-Third Age when ne founded the northern realm of Angmar. He is also known as the Black Captain, Lord of Morgul, and other names besides. He is the mightiest of the Nazgul, and was finally slain by Eowyn and Merry during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Only one of the Nazgul is truly named named by Tolkien: Khamul, the Black Easterling, also called the 'Shadow of the East', was the second in command of the nine and is referred to as Sauron's lieutenant. He dwelt at Dol Guldur after it's reoccupation in the Third Age. He was also the one who went to Hobbiton (at the beginning of LOTR) and spoke to Gaffer Gamgee, as well as followed the hobbits along the road and narrowly missed catching them at Buckleberry Ferry. Of Khamul, Tolkien says that of all the Nazgul, his power was most disminished by daylight.

Born in the year 2983 of the Third Age, Faramir was the second son of Denethor II (the last Ruling Steward of Gondor.) He very much grew up in his older brother, )Boromir's) shadow and his admiration for Gandalf was one reason his father was continually displeased with him.
As the Captain of the Rangers of Ithilien, Faramir was responsible for the protection of Ithilien's borders. It was here that he encountered Frodo, Sam, and Gollum. From Faramir, the hobbits first learned that Boromir had been slain. Trusting him, Frodo entrusted Faramir with the truth of his task. On learning of their plan to go by way of Cirith Ungol, Faramir expressed his great fear for their safety and of Cirith Ungol, and warns Frodo to stay extremely wary of Gollum. He declares Frodo - and those with him - free in the realm of Gondor and under his protection, and allows them to continue on.
Once returned to Gondor, Faramir is met by the displeasure of his father, and reveals his encounter with Frodo to Gandalf and Pippin. It is Faramir who leads the retreat from Osgiliath to Minas Tirith (before the siege of Gondor.) He was struck down by the 'Black Breath' of the Witch King, and brought to his father. Thinking both his sons are now dead , Denethor takes Faramir with him to the Tombs, intending for a pyre to be made for them both.
Faramir was saved by Pippin, who realized that Faramir was to be burned alive. Faramir is then rescued by Beregond and Gandalf, and taken to the Houses of Healing, where he is healed by Aragorn. It is in the Houses of Healing where Faramir encounters and falls in love with Éowyn, Shieldmaiden of Rohan.
After the War, the couple married and Faramir became Steward of Gondor, the Lord of Emyn Arnen, and Prince of Ithilien until his death, in the year 82 of the Fourth Age.

Originally (1958), Tolkien gives the name Elrond the meaning Elf of the Cave. Later (a 1972 Letter) he interpreted the name as meaning Vault of Stars or Vault of Heaven. Christopher Tolkien translates it as Star-Dome in the Silmarilian.
Elrond is the son of Earendil and Elwing (both half-elves). He is both Noldor (on his father's side) and Sindarin (on his mother's), as well as descended from the Edain through both lines. He has a brother named Elros, who eventually became the first king of Numenor.
Elrond was born at the Sirion Havens in the late First Age. During the sack of the Havens, Elrond and his brother were captured by the sons of Feanor - but Maglor released them.
After the War of Wrath, because of his father's great deed in asking (and winning) the aid of the Valar against Morgoth, Earendil and his children (and ,i>their children) were given the choice to be counted either among Elves or Men. Elrond chose the Firstborn, and stayed in Lindon with Gil-galad. HIs brother Elros chose to be counted among Men. (Aragorn was a descendant of Elrond's brother.)
Elrond remained in Lindon until the invasion of Eriador by Sauron, (1697 Second Age) at which time he and the surviving Noldor fled. Elrond then founded Imladris (Rivendell) as a refuge. He now had the greatest of the Elven Rings, Vilya - given to him by Gil-galad.
Elrond fought alongside Gil-galad (as his herald) and Elendil during the Last Alliance. He tried to persuade Isildur to throw the One Ring into the Fire at that time.
Elrond was a member of the White Council.
He was wed to Celebrian (100 Third Age), the daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn. Their children are Elladan, Elrohir, and Arwen. Celebrian departed ME for the West after she was attacked by orcs in the Misty Mountains (and rescued by her sons).
During the Third Age, Elrond gave both his aid and counsel to the Dúnedain (which included protection for Arnor and Arthedain, and refuge for the Dúnedain - especially the Line of Isildur). He secretly raised Aragorn in Rivendell until Aragorn reached the age of twenty, at which time Elrond told him of his lineage. Even though Aragorn and Arwen had fallen in love, Elrond would not consent to the marriage of his daughter to any Man who was less than the King of both Gondor and Arnor.
In 3018 (Third Age) Elrond held the great Council in Rivendell, where he chose the members of the Fellowship who would aid Frodo in the quest to destroy the One Ring.
After the War of the Ring, Elrond had been in Middle earth some 6,500 years. He finally departed Middle Earth with Frodo and many of the Noldor at the end of the Third Age.

Éowyn disguised herself as a warrior called Dernhelm and rode with the Rohirrim toward the Battle of Pelennor Fields.
It was there where she won the greatest fame by standing over the mortally wounded Théoden and fighting the Witch King. Éowyn then revealed that she was a shieldmaiden and with her sword killed the Winged Beast on which he rode. Then, with the help of Meriadoc Brandybuck, she slew the Witch King of Angmar..
In the struggle, Éowyn was overcome with the Black Breath of the Ringwraiths and fell into a death-like sleep. She was eventually brought out of her coma by the healing powers of Aragorn.
After the War of the Ring, Éowyn recovered from both the effects of battle, and her infatuation with Aragorn. While in the Houses of Healing, she met, fell in love with, and married Faramir, the Steward of Gondor and Prince of Ithilien.
