PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATION The group Ekklesia was created
originally with the profound idea of being a group of
"Colombianistas", interested in studying the country and in feeding
their love for Colombia and the will of working for her. Although not
mentioned explicitly in the content of the page below, Colombia
constitutes the point of reference for the global action of the group.
Nonetheless, the increased participation of people of other
nationalities calls for a more open orientation. Therefore, this page
should become the introduction to a global network of culture, a
freeway to knowledge and fraternity. So far, the members of this group
are people that come from different countries in Latin-America,
therefore, the group work will offer a Latin-American taste. compared
studies between countries are strongly encouraged, taking advantage of
the situation of Ekklesia's members who live in different countries
outside or within Latin America.

Ekklesia is a network devoted to the exchange of ideas that tries to
link people of a great human value sharing certain common principles,
basically intellectual honesty and curiosity.
The former one makes people consequent with what they declare and even
with what they intend to do according to their inner law. Such honesty
includes courage to follow their own convictions, resisting the
temptation of following the herd.
As for the intellectual curiosity, it is convenient to point out that
it might be what is called the child spirit, characterised by the will
of reaching the remotest places, of making all evidence a subject to
investigate deeper. In other terms, we are talking about a disposition
that will prevent from "buying easily" any "ready-to-eat" truth. Still
in other words, it is what the Ancient Greeks used to call a
philosopher's soul.
The name comes from Greece and goes back to the classic period (V and IV centuries before Christ). Every citizen was ex officio a member of the Ekklesia, sovereign assembly of Greek cites, equivalent to our modern parliaments (the word Ekklesia comes from "ekkalein": to call publicly; and this one is made of "ek": outside, and "kaleim": to call).
Such a citizen could then take part in all debates and all decisions.
He could not name a deputy to speak on his name. Democracy was direct
and not representative. Not only did the assembly vote the laws, but it
also took decisions that nowadays are reserved to the executive and
even the judicial powers.

* What for?
In this way, the orientation of the group is given by its name. As a
parliament, Ekklesia aims at arousing the most diverse curiosities in
the minds of its members and at stoking the intellectual flame that
each one of them carries inside. In a world ruled by the division of
work in which the individualisation va crescendo
and the risk of getting trapped in a one and only discipline is patent,
Ekklesia aspires to be an oasis of global culture, providing a
multidisciplinary overlook and, therefore, a

far-away echo of the Greek Ekklesia.
To ensure the multidisciplinary approach, Ekklesia is composed of
members of various fields of knowledge: political science, engineering,
economics, cinematography, philosophy, music, etc. Some are astudents;
others are professionals in their respective disciplines.
The abova are all persons that are appreciated by Ekklesia for their
human value and it is precisely the human value what constitutes the
nucleus of our Ekklesia. We believe that technicians bursting with
knowledge are counted by millions but the indispensable ones are not
these but those who enhoy of a rich personality but always eager for
culture and knowledge of any type. In other words, here we try to
educate ourselves in the long and arduous art of being ignorant, so as
to never give up when learning with the simple eyes of he who knows
that he does not know anything.
We want to do so through the exchange of the most diverse
contributions, made by people with different backgrounds and
sensibilities. This exchange aims at prevailing over the tyranny of the
mono-discipline, and at providing more pixels to the picture that we
hace od the world that we live in.
Working Method:
Being perfectly aware of the chronological unavailability of its participants, Ekklesia proposes a modus operandi that fits such restrictions.
There are two chronological horizons for the work of the group: short and "deep".
Short chronological horizon:
the members are invited to make one contribution per week (to be posted
as late as Sunday night). This is a completely free contribution, both
for its content and its shape. The purpose here is to show each
member's personality, result of a long and unique path, considering
that the flame of each member can help stoking the flame of the others
and become an important cultural contribution for another person with a
different life but sharing the same principles explained before.
Deep chronological horizon: This
consists in a research of one semester about a topical issue. We intend
to study such an issue extensively, trying to find historic, social,
(...) and economic explanations and implications. Each member will be
asigned, after having received his consent, a specific orientation
according to his knowledge and/or interests. A small report of the work
shall be posted in the webpage of the group every fifteen days. We do
not demand a long and complete report but only something that may tell
the group about the research being done. At the end of the semester,
Ekklesia will assemble its members (virtually if it is not possible
physically) and, after a presentation of each member's research, all
the work will be gathered together in a compact piece that will be
posted in the site and available to any one. Our purpose is to unveil
the current events so that they can be seen plainly, without the a priori that burs out of the public opinion
or the press, and at the same time to share the research fo the
different members, with their different points of view according to
their own academic and intellectual tools.
Ekklesia wishes to make us more complete observers, with a considerable panoramic capacity.

Given that the human soul needs orthopaedic measures to
operate most of the times and that we want to avoid hampering the work
of Ekklesia, we have established some penalties in case of
non-compliance with the group constitution. This is above all a
symbolic figure, chosen to avoid any major inconvenient or discontent
and with the purpose of enriching the person culturally.
In case of non-compliance with the rules, the penalty will consist on
making a review of any of the movies of the list "corrigo rectum" drew
by Rumi de la Rocha, qualified cinema expert and member of the group.
This review should include a personal opinion of the experience with
the movie and must be posted along with the due contribution during the
next week or else a heavier penalty will be decided (visit to a museum
with a small report of the experience). A new contribution
corresponding to the new week must also be posted during that time.

New members are invited to publish a small introductory letter in the
section "members and invited participants". We recommend including
information about points of interest background, hopes concerning the
group, etc.
Also, we invite the members to give each other the chance to establish
mutual relationships beyond the contributions within the frame of the
group. Let us get to know each other well, like soldiers who are going
to battle together.
Finally, the webmaster of the site (Luis Salamanca) wishes to apologies
in advance if ever the webpage is not moving along very fast. Luis has
many occupations but he assures that he will do his best to keep it up
at all times.
Ekklesia makes an appeal to you all to put your bit so that we can
build a network that will prefigure our aspirations for our country,
Latin-America and the world. Homer tells us that in Ancient Greece
towards the end of the VII century before Christ, two things prefigured
and prepared the democracy that would appear seven centuries later:
freedom of speech and concern about others that would sometime take the
shape of hospitality and other times the shape of compassion. Let us
too take that, without falling into anachronisms, and let us also
remember Plato's aphorism that preached: "It is not stones but men that
which constitutes the real defence of the city".
