Hours of Operation and Location of Camp
· June 22, 2009 – August 6, 2009
· 7:30 am – 5:30 pm
· Cartoogechaye Elementary School, 3295 Old Murphy Road, Franklin, NC 28734
· 5-12 years
· Elementary students in grades K-5th are eligible to attend. Students ages 12 and under who have completed any middle school grade are eligible to attend.
· Counselor-in-Training volunteer program is available for selected students ages 15 up to age 18.
Pre-registration is required for all Campers. Registration forms will be available at the Macon County Schools Central Office on Monday, March 2, 2009. In addition to the registration form, all parents/guardians must provide a copy of their child’s birth certificate, immunization record and a recent photo.
Enrollment is accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis provided there are available slots. Parents/Guardians must complete a registration form and submit it with a non-refundable registration fee of $25, payable to Macon County Schools, to hold the Camper’s slot. Children will be allowed to attend the program only after all registration forms and the complete tuition payment have been submitted. To ensure the Camper’s participation in the program, summer tuition is due in full by Monday, June 8, 2009, and all payments can be made at the Macon County Schools Central Office until June 8th.
Tuition, Fees and Payment Plan
Tuition: $896 for the 8-week summer 2009 program, with a non-refundable $25 registration fee. A limited number of part-time slots are available for session A (June 22nd-July 10th, cost $500) and session B (July 13th-August 6th, cost $600). Full tuition payment is due by Monday, June 8th, prior to the beginning of Camp. Tuition fees are paid to reserve the entire summer of child care, according to the option agreement, regardless of the actual number of day/hours the child attends. Macon County Schools reserves the right to offer the summer Camper slot to other interested parties if the full tuition is not received by June 8th, 2009. Registration fees are not refundable for any reason. Please note: Camper Clubs may be chosen only after tuition and fees are paid in full.
Late Charges: All Campers must be picked up daily by 5:30 pm. Parents/Guardians arriving after 5:30 pm will be assessed a late charge of $1.00 per child for every minute after pickup time. Repeated late pickups will be cause for removal from the program.
Subsidized Payments: Some families may qualify for fee assistance from the Department of Social Services. For more information about subsidized care, please call Amber Henning at Macon County Department of Social Services 369-2156.
Program Activities and Offerings
Activities are planned around the interests and needs of the children and include the following: physical activity; arts and crafts; independent and group activities; quiet time for reading, journaling, drawing, coloring, painting; and enrichment opportunities shared by community agencies, businesses, and individuals. Summer Edventure Camp will strive to maintain a balance between self-directed and adult-guided activities, periods of play alternated with periods of rest, and opportunities for outdoor play.
Weekly themes and a schedule will be available prior to the start of
Camp. On-site activities may include sports, arts and crafts, science
projects, and guest presenters and performers. Enrichment field trips to
local attractions, museums, parks, and recreational facilities will be
offered. Camper Clubs will be held on Wednesday mornings. Campers
may make their Club selections only after all tuition and fees have been
received. Size of Club and the age group served may be limited.
Arrival and Departure of Children
Parents/Guardians
are required to sign the sign-in and sign-out sheet when picking up or dropping
off their child. The child will be released only to authorized persons as
listed on the registration form by the parent/guardian. Only persons age
18 and over are allowed to sign out a child. The parent loop is for your
convenience and the safety of the children. The morning parent drop-off
loop will operate 7:30 - 8:30 am daily, and the afternoon parent pick-up loop
will operate 4:30 – 5:30 pm each day. Pick-up is not permitted between
4:15 and 4:30pm; doors to the school building will be locked during this time
in order to prepare for the loop traffic. At other times throughout the day,
child(ren) must be escorted into and out of the building by an adult.
Absences and Illness
If a child
will not be attending the program because of scheduled appointments, vacations,
or other planned absences, the Camp coordinator must be notified in
advance. If a child is ill, the parent/guardian will be notified to pick
up the child immediately, and if he/she cannot be reached, the emergency
contact person listed on the registration form will be contacted.
Macon County Schools Policy 6125, Administering Medicines to Students, will be strictly followed during Summer Edventure Camp. When a child should be given either prescription or over-the-counter medicine, the parent/guardian must provide the Camp coordinator with a physician’s prescription and a completed Request to Administer Medication Form signed by the physician. The medication must be hand-delivered to a staff member; that is, no medications may be delivered by the child. The medication must be provided in the original container accompanied by the doctor’s directions. Parents/Guardians must inform the Camp when the medicine is to be discontinued.
According to child care licensing standards, sunscreen is considered a medication and requires parent authorization. Staff will offer Campers opportunities throughout the day to apply sunscreen and will assist if necessary. It is recommended that parents apply sunscreen to children prior to arriving at Camp each day. A brand-name sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher will be supplied by the Camp. In accordance with North Carolina child care laws and Macon County Schools policy, no other sunscreens may be brought and used by Campers without a doctor’s prescription.
Breakfast,
lunch and afternoon snacks are provided daily at no extra charge and are
catered by the Macon County Schools Child Nutrition Department and served
on-site. On occasion, boxed lunches and snacks will be provided while on
field trips. Please be advised that there is neither refrigerated storage
available nor space for coolers for Camper lunches. Parents/Guardians who
wish to provide a treat in honor of a child's birthday should contact the Camp
coordinator to determine the number of children to be served and plan the
date. Only store-bought, pre-packaged food items are allowed.
Parents/Guardians must assume responsibility for transportation to and from the Summer Edventure Camp campus each day. Transportation for enrichment field trips by Macon County Schools activity bus, driven by certified drivers, will be coordinated through the school system’s transportation department. Parent/Guardian signature on a comprehensive field trip permission form is required for all Camper trips off-site.
The Macon County School Board requires parents/guardians to provide accident/health insurance coverage for their children in order to participate in Summer Edventure Camp. Many families are covered by the parent’s policy at work or their own private policies. Public school students may sign up for accident insurance in the fall of each year.
Summer
Edventure Camp is an optional program that is available to children and their
parents. We believe that children are entitled to a pleasant and
harmonious environment and make every effort to provide such a setting for
enrolled children. Combined with the educational and recreational aspects
of the program is a philosophy of encouragement, support, and positive reinforcement.
At the time of enrollment, parents sign a statement that they have read and understand
these operational policies and the Discipline and Behavior Management Policy
(attached). The following guidelines will be enforced:
1. Corporal punishment is not used.
2. When discipline in necessary, the Camp coordinator will use various methods to gain the Campers’ attention and cooperation.
a. Calling down the Camper and giving the Camper a warning.
b. Discussing the problem with the Camper privately, and/or
c. Giving the Camper a “time-out” where the child is removed from the activity for a short time (3-5 minutes). The “time-out” space, usually a chair, is located away from the program activity but within the Camp coordinator’s sight.
3. After a brief interval of no more than 5 minutes, the Camp coordinator will discuss the incident and appropriate behavior with the child. When the child returns to the group, the incident is over, and the child will be treated with the same affection and respect shown to the other children.
4. When these methods do not improve the Camper’s behavior, the Camp coordinator will consult with the parent/guardian.
5. If repeated efforts do not cause the Camper’s behavior to improve, after a third written warning to the parent/guardian, the Camper will not be allowed to participate in the program for the remainder of the summer.
6. If the Camper is removed from Camp for disciplinary reasons, there will be no refund of the monies paid.
7.
Parents/Guardians
are responsible for any malicious damage of school property.
Campers are highly encouraged to wear tennis shoes daily. All sandals must have a heel strap. Please pack a swimsuit and towel everyday in a backpack or bag. Parents/Guardians will be given a weekly plan of daily activities that will indicate what additional items Campers need to bring. All items must be clearly marked with the Camper’s name in permanent ink.
Please do not bring food or snack items. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks will be provided. Please do not bring money, candy, toys, hand-held or electronic games, head phones, or any other personal items from home. These items are easily lost and distract from the Summer Edventure Camp experience. Macon County Schools cannot be responsible for lost personal property.
For safety reasons, Campers must wear a Camp T-shirt on all field trips. New shirts may be purchased for $10. Campers may wear a Camp T-shirt from previous years.
Parents/Guardians are required to attend a parent information night on Thursday, June 18th, 2009 at 7:00pm to 8:30pm, prior to the first day of Summer Edventure Camp. A calendar of activities and field trips will be available at that time.

Services, Division of Child Development, and is governed by the Child Care
