Edmund R. Schubert

Novels, Short Stories, Articles & Essays

Edmund R. Schubert loves stories. Always has; always will. When he was in the second grade, his teacher would bribe him with trips to the library to get him to do his math and science. Little has changed since then...    (For the full bio (as well as a self-inflicted headshot), click "Bio & Interviews" on the list on the left) Or here: www.edmundrschubert.com/biointerviews.htm

Things related to my role as editor of Orson Scott Card's InterGalactic Medicine Show, as well as the forthcoming Tor anthology (2008) of the same name, can be found here: www.edmundrschubert.com/intergalacticmedicineshow.htm

My first novel, Dreaming Creek, is now set to come out some time in the fall of 2008. You can get a brief synopsis here: www.edmundrschubert.com/dreamingcreek.htm  here's a sneak peek at the cover, which I just got from the designer:

News

June 12, 2007 - Turned in MS to Tor for the IGMS anthology that will come out (probably) next spring.

Dec. 9, 2006 - Just got the official acceptance on my story, "Lair of the Ice Rat," which will appear (sometime next year; still awaiting specifics) in Crypto-Critters II, a cryptozology-themed anthology from Padwolf Publishing.

Nov. 17, 2006 - Twilight Times Books, the publishers of Futures Mystery Anthology Magazine has been added to the Mystery Writers of America list of approved publishers, meaning they are now eligible to nominate stories to the preliminary ballot for the Edgar Award (the Mystery Writers version of the Nebula Award). All of which is a lot of preamble to say that I just got an e-mail from the publisher/owner of Twilight times Books telling me that they are nominating my story “Good With Directions” (one of the featured stories in the May/June ’06 issue of Futures) for the Edgar in the category of best short story. It’s just a preliminary nomination, but it’s my first brush with a major award and I’m pretty excited.

Oct. 3, 2006 - Issue three (my first as editor) of Orson Scott Card's InterGalactic Medicine Show is now live. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out and think you'll agree it has some really top-notch stories. Check it out at: www.InterGalacticMedicineShow.com

I'll also be apprearing on some panels at CapClave, a literary SF/Fantasy convention in Washington DC. CapClave is the weekend of 10/20 - 10/22 (www.CapClave.org)

Oct. 1, 2006 - Looks like this is my month for reprints. My interview/article about the HWA mentoring program was reprinted in Dark Recesses and permanently added to the HWA website (http://www.horror.org/article-mentoring.htm), and my short story "Samantha" was reprinted in The Horror Library. I've also made my travel and hotel atrrangements to go to World Fantasy in Austin TX. That will be Nov. 2 - 4.

Sept. 15, 2006 - An interview I did with Mur Lafferty for her podcast "I Should Be Writing" is now live: it's her entry for September 14th. My sending you there is a something of a leap of faith, as technical difficulties have prevented me from hearing it myself. Someone drop me a note if I sound like too much of a fool...

July 14, 2006 - Interviewed by Doug Cohen (assistant editor at Realms of Fantasy) about my role as editor of InterGalactic Medicine Show. He posted the write-up on his blog: http://slushmaster.livejournal.com/

June 24, 2006 - http://www.itsthestorystupid.com/    An interview with Orson Scott Card and me (mainly OSC) about InterGalactic Medicine Show. This podcast by a gentleman out of Atlanta is a pretty good look into the mind of OSC with regard to IGMS and short fiction in general.

May 31, 2006 - IGMS Welcomes New Editor, Edmund R. Schubert.

Orson Scott Card is pleased to announce that Mr. Edmund R. Schubert has joined our staff as editor of InterGalactic Medicine Show. He will assume responsibility for selecting the stories that will appear in IGMS, beginning immediately by sorting through our extensive backlog of submitted stories.

Schubert’s story, “Trill and the Beanstalk,” appeared in the first issue of IGMS, and he has published over thirty short stories in a variety of other magazines and anthologies. In addition to his fiction writing, he is also Executive Editor of the business magazine, North Carolina Career Network, and is excited for this opportunity to bring his editing experience together with his love of great speculative fiction.

May 29, 2006 - I've been tapped to be the first full-time non-fiction contributor at The Horror Library, a cool horror web-site that has been steadily growing for the past few years. I'll be doing monthly articles, interviews, reviews, etc. Check it out at: www.horrorlibrary.net

April 24, 2006 - I got an advance .PDF copy of the May/June issue of Futures Mystery Anthology. My name and story were one of three listed on the cover (out of over 20 stories) and I'm highlighted as a "Featured Author."

April 20, 2006 - Just home from a trip to Germany to find my contributor's copy of Beyond Centauri, with my story "Weird Omelets." Beyond Centauri publishes F and SF for young teen readers.

January 6, 2006 - Got this in an e-mail today: "Thank you for making the Writers Post Journal a wonderful read and success. In 2005 over 200 authors saw their work in print on the pages of our journal. It was an arduous process but editors and artists have gotten together and we have selected for our anniversary issue, 20 of the best stories. Your piece ("I Have To Go Now") has been chosen as one of those twenty."

December 15, 2005 - Just got an acceptance from a new on-line venture called The Mechanized Muse. Interesting concept; they plan to release all of their stories as audio files. "The River Is Forever" will appear in the premiere issue Feb. 15, 2006 at:  http://www.mechmuse.com/

October 15, 2005 - "Trill and the Beanstalk" goes up live on Orson Scott Card's new e-zine www.intergalacticmedicineshow.com

October 5, 2005 - It's going to be a good month (for fiction, anyway). I went to the mailbox today to find a (small) check from the folks at From The Asylum, where it turns out my short "About Time" can now be found.

July 2, 2005 - Story "Clyde's Hide" selected as runner-up in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine April 2005 Mysterious Photo/Story Contest.  My name (only) will appear in the October 2005 issue.

May 24, 2005 - I got my contributor copies of Outer Darkness (issue #31) today. It's a small magazine, but what a pleasant surprise to find my name on the cover.  (Second time that's happened; the first in the U.S.  The other time was with British publication, Fusing Horizons.)

March 6, 2005 - StorySouth, "the best from new south writers," recently announced its list of Notable Stories of 2004. These are the stories they deemed the top short stories published on-line in 2004. Included on that list was my story, "Reality Check On Register Two" (published by Pindeldyboz in January of 2004).

February 20, 2005 - One of my best rejections (yes, there definitely is such a thing as a good rejection).  Dr. Stanley Schmidt at Analog sent me a personal note saying that although the story I submitted didn't fit their current needs, he "rather liked my style of writing and encouraged me to submit again."

January 2, 2005 - Featured in People & Places section - "Stay-at-home dad juggles writing and child care" - in the Greensboro (NC) News & Record (approx. circulation 110,000) http://www.edmundrschubert.com/interviews.htm

August, 2004 - Interviewed by the head of Rembrandt Publishing for their web-site.  Interview also reprinted in one of their magazines.
