The airport currently handles around 7.9m passengers every year. But with current growth rates of 10% per year, Edinburgh is expected to overtake Glasgow and become the UKs 6th busiest airport. By 2030 it is believed the airport could be handling as many as 24m passengers per year.
Edinburgh currently serves many destinations around the world. While most flights are either domestic or european, 2004 will see the start of the first transatlantic scheduled flight from Edinburgh, with Continental commencing a daily flight to New York(Newark) on the 11th of June 2004.
Edinburgh Airpot is also an important cargo centre, with all the major carriers having a presence at the cargo centre, including TNT, UPS and DHL. Although the airport does not recieve any 747 freighters like Prestwick, it is the main airport for cargo throughput in Scotland. Handling about twice as much cargo as any other Scottish airport.
Edinburgh Airport continues to go from strength to strength, and the future sure looks bright for Scotlands capital airport!
