Eating
Disorders:
Anorexia
...
involves excessive fear of normal body weight, leading
to relentless pursuit of thinness. People with anorexia
often deny there is anything wrong with them and continue
to feel fat even when at very low weight. They may
exercise excessively to burn off calories.
Bulimia
...
is characterised by binge eating followed by self
induced vomiting / periods of starvation / purging
with laxatives. This is frequently a hidden condition
as the person with bulimia can be of normal body weight
and appear confident and coping.
Compulsive Eating ...
involves periods of bingeing and/or periods of "grazing"
when the person may be barely aware of food he or
she is eating. This can lead to yo-yo dieting, fluctuation
in weight, or obesity.
Many people do not fit neatly into one of these three
categories but their eating behaviour can be just
as distressing. Feelings of low self-esteem and lack
of confidence are common to all people with eating
disorders.
