Eclat D'étoile (french for "star burst") is fully licensed and inspected. Not only are we meeting - we're exceeding - all the bylaws for a breeding kennel. We are located on southern Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada. We have a 10 acre farm and I also breed and train Peruvian Paso horses. Our family members include many animals consisting of show rabbits and parrots as well as cats, chickens, lizards and horses. We have a number of dogs other then Belgians, including our very special rescue dog, Dawson, who is a young Doberman Pinscher. We were his fifth home by the age of one year old! My daughters and I enjoy obedience with our dogs as well as handling classes and dog sports like flyball and agility. When we go trail riding, the dogs get to tag along and enjoy the many miles of spectacular trails we have near by.
The first Belgian Tervuren I had the pleasure of meeting belongs to a very good friend of mine. I met her 15 years ago and she's still going strong. I was amazed at her intelligence and versatility. I bred Shelties and Border Collies and I love the mind of the herding breeds, but I found the Belgians to be a little bit better 'all round' dogs. They are not as high drive and intense as a Border Collie, and bigger then Shelties and therefore better suited to trail riding and some other outdoor activities. I had wanted to have Belgians since the day I met one. I spent many hours researching breeders and talking to them about what I was looking for in a dog. I made sure there was no history of siezures in any of the dogs I have purchased. All dogs are CERF'd and OFA'd before being considered for breeding, as well as temperament tested. All outside stud dogs are screened for any potential health problems. My goal is to breed dogs with sound structure and temperament for the show ring, dog sports and to be all around good companions. My doors are always open to other breeders and Belgian lovers. If ever interested in stopping by for a visit, give us a call and we'd be happy to have you.
These are the facts about our kennel:
Overall, my Belgian Shepherds have some of the best temperments in the area. I do Early Neurological Stimulation exercises with the puppies, which we have found very successful, and we believe to be an extremely important and beneficial aspect of puppy rearing. All puppies are born and raised in the house (my kitchen to be precise) until they are about 5 weeks old. Then they are introduced to the grass playpens, the baby toys (all brightly coloured), their aunties (my older dogs), chickens, horses, cats, many kids and people and they are handled and played with every day.
My dogs are in excellent health. My puppies are checked by a veterinarian, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped/tattooed before leaving. And unlike many breeders, I've worked in the medical field for a large portion of my life. I worked in a veterinary clinic for about 10 years, and am now a human nurse.
My dogs' conformation is something I am proud of. Unlike some, I do not insist on breeding purely within my own lines. I believe that if there is a common fault with your dogs, it's very hard to get rid of it if you continuously breed back to dogs carrying that fault. This is why, after intensive research, we breed to outside dogs and purchase from world-renowned breeders whose dogs, we believe, will compliment ours in such a way as to produce puppies that fit the Breed Standard.
Our dogs are happy, well treated, and get the attention they deserve. Our dogs spend most of their lives in our home. They live with kids, and go to beaches, parks, fairs, malls, festivals, etc. They participate in obedience, agility, etc. as well as conformation. They live just as any family dog should, because that's what they are.
I have been breeding dogs for over 15 years and our dogs are bred on a limited basis. Each litter is planned out in detail well in advance, with the dog's overall health as the most important consideration. We breed only to produce dogs of the upmost quality. Our puppies have been sold as show prospects, obedience, agility and flyball prospects, great companions, search & rescue dogs, etc. Please have a look at what our puppy-buyers Have To Say about us.
Eclat D'étoile believes in quality, not quantity. We do not breed for money. In fact, we've homed at least one puppy from every litter for free, either to friends, family, or truly deserving Belgian lovers. We breed for the betterment of the breed, and are always focused on conformation, health and temperment.
