Eating Disorders are 'needed' by their sufferers for many reasons. The eating disorder is secondary to all underlying issues of the condition. I believe that individuals suffering from eating disorders will have control issues relating to their earlier and present life and the control of food/calories/weight provides a focus or preoccupation which enables them to put original problems to one side. These original problems may initially not be recognised or recalled by clients, where they may feel their eating disorder is simply a 'diet which went out of control'.

Initially accepting the need for the eating disorder along with recognising and giving permission for the disorder to continue, while underlying issues are addressed, is a starting point in the process of recovery.
I believe that it is important to provide the opportunity to build a trusting professional relationship through sessions as well as additional free email support between. This provides clients with an on-going form of support to enable both myself and the client to address and identify triggers, behaviour patterns and surrounding issues as quickly as possible.
