Would you believe it possible to get excited about digging or spades? No? Neither did I until........
THE STORY
It all began when my partner Tony, a builder and member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen, was telling me about his work on the Continent. They do things differently over there in the construction industry. He told me that he particularly missed using some of their excellent tools. One in particular was a long handled shovel. The long handle meant added leverage which meant less strain on the back, and the pointed blade could cut into soil easily and reach into corners. He bemoaned the fact that the only similar shovel he had seen here in Britain was of poor quality.
So I thought I would do some research - it wasn't easy, but eventually I found a company who stocked the type he wanted. Heavy duty, well made, built to last and of the highest quality solid forged steel with a substantial hardwood handle. We ordered one and he hasn't looked back. 
Putting it in Tony's own words when he came in from the garden after using it for the first time, "This is the most magic f***ing shovel there is - even better than the German ones!" It makes mincemeat of groundwork."
Over the next few days he talked of little else.
This is what else he has to say about it: "The beauty of it is, you don't have to move around a lot because it gives you an extended reach. It's like having an arm over 6ft long. You just push it forwards into the pile you are moving - soil, compost, mortar, stones, sand or other aggregates - then slide it back towards yourself on the ground with little effort and minimal strain on the back. There's little bending, and walking back and forth like you have to do with standard spades and shovels. Then you direct it into the barrow or pile by your side. It is especially easy to manoeuvre because it has no T handle which would just get in the way and catch on your wrist or sleeve.
"It's also good for getting into deep containers such as mortar tubs, compost heaps or deep holes. You don't have to bend over the sides and the pointed blade will reach easily into corners. You can also reach heights with ease, for instance if you need to transfer substances onto scaffold, into skips or onto trucks.
"The point makes it easy to cut into into soil or clay, it is good for digging out bushes, cuts through tough weeds and breaks up earth, so it is excellent for turning over soil in your garden, allotment or market garden.
"Ideal for spading (bottoming) out flat bases for foundations, lawns etc. and when using mortar it is ideal for premix or mixing your own by hand.
"Definitely the best shovel for someone with back problems, and for all of us who want to avoid 
a bad back, as you can more or less do all the work in an upright position. This is why Europeans have been using them for donkeys years. You can shift vast quantities of material in less than half the time and with far less effort than if you used a standard spade.
"All in all it's a really tough, robust and well made spade that will last. You will never want to buy another shovel - that's the impact it has on you. You know you are on a winner as soon as you have used it once.
"In my opinion it is the Roll's Royce of shovels."
