Spread the Word about ECN by involving your friends and family. Encourage them to sign-up turn off their lights at 6.30pm on Friday 08th May 2009.

Schools/Universities

Schools across Mauritius can switch off lights and appliances for just one hour on 08th  May 2009.

In the Classroom

Students can make a valuable contribution to ECNM. Imagine if all schools in Mauritius turn off lights and appliances when classrooms and offices are not in use on 08.05.2009.Here are some simple steps for you to save energy in your school and classroom to-day:

  1. Lights & Computers
  • Turn-off lights and fans when no one is in the classroom, especially at recess and lunchtime.
  • Turn-off computers & monitors when they aren’t in use.

2. Heating & Cooling

  • Keep the doors & windows closed in your classroom when the heating or air conditioning is running.
  • Ensure there is nothing blocking air conditioning or heating vents in your classroom.
  • Make sure the thermostat settings are not set too high or too low.

3. Water

  • Turn off the taps and bubblers when you are finished.
  • Tell a teacher if there is a leaking tap in the toilets, classroom or playground

The Event at Home on ECNM (Night)

When the lights go down in Mauritius for ECN on Friday 08th  May 2009, the best place to be is with friends and family.

  • Take part in one of the many events taking place on the night. Or you could organise your own celebration.
  • Get the neighbours together for a BBQ or head out to your local park for the hour.
  • Take some binoculars and look at the stars. Or just go for a stroll.
  • Talk with your family and friends about the state of our planet and the need to make a change to keep the place we live the way we need it to be.
  • Do something non-electric as a family – have a picnic or a have a candlelit dinner – but most importantly enjoy!
  • Do something special-Read a book with your/some children by candlelight.
    •  Enjoy a quiet dinner with a special person (love ones & friends)
    • Listen to music under candlelight
    • Spend time with your family under candlelight
    • Take a bath under candlelight
    • Write a letter under candlelight
    • Spend time as usual under candlelight

Saving Energy

We can change our daily energy habits in many ways, to name a few:-

 TURN OFF UNNEEDED LIGHTS

  • Use natural light where possible.
  • Don't light rooms which are empty.
  • Use curtains/shades to regulate natural light.
  • Work outdoors when possible

INSTALL ENERGY-EFFICIENT LIGHTING AND/OR DIMMER SWITCHES

  • Install dimmer switches.

 CARPOOL

Don't ride alone on 08th  May 2009. Plan, and share a ride with others if you're going to drive on Earth. If need, take a bus, travel by public transport.

INSTALL TOILET-TANK DISPLACEMENT BAG

It takes energy to heat, transport and treat water, so don't waste so much of it by simply flushing it

INSULATE YOUR WATER-HEATER

POWER SAVE YOUR APPLIANCES

ENJOY NATURE AND THE OUTDOORS
Turn off your cell phone. Get outside if the weather is nice and enjoy nature

WALK

It's the best form of exercise for your health, and you can enjoy nature up close.

RIDE A BIKE

Enjoy a quiet dinner with a special perosn ( loved ones & friends)
good opportunity to enjoy dinner with your favourite person

Listen to music under candlelight
What music goes with 'Candle-Night'? Any kind of music (you may allow yourself soem electricity).If you can play a musical instrument, enjoy your own " Candle Night Concert' at home.

Spend time with your family under candlelight
Tunr off the lights and TV . Talk with your family in a different atmosphere. You may enjpy specail stories with them under candlelight.

Take a bath under candlelight
On the bath water, reflections of the candles, flames flicker.Arima candles are better for relaxation.

Write a letter under candlelight
Candle Night can remind you of your loved ones and friends who live far away.

Have a Candle-Night Party/Get-Together
Eat good food, talk, sing and dance together.

Spend Time as Usual under candlelight
Spend time as usual but with as little lights.
