BING BROS, NUREMBERG, GERMANY

This wonderful semi-portable overtype was an ebay buy from an auction house in Germany. It was in pretty bad shape when it arrived, splattered with orange paint, the firebox broken off and the flywheel bracket bent right out of shape. With a little gentle TLC and a firebox / base / boiler leg (look at the detail!) repaint we were back in business! It's very, very old; the GBN badge embossed on the firebox is enclosed in hoops, seen above right, and dates it to between 1902-7. It works on a double-action slide valve principle, and the inline oil filler cap is engraved with "oil here" in German, French and English. It goes like the clappers, and it's amazing to think that this little engine was possibly played with a decade before even WW1 started.
