Engine 107 B on the Working Strip Mall Fire

At 2336 hours communications dispatched units to 5025 Columbia Pike in Station 101's first due for a fire at the Party Line Ice Cream Store.  Engine 101, with Captain Genest, arrived to find heavy smoke inside the store.  As Company 1 was preparing to stretch a line through the front door, Rescue 109 was forcing the rear door when they encountered a gas fed flash fire that engulfed Captain Baravechia and Firefighter Brandon Jones. Both suffered burns to their faces and eyes.  They were transported to the Burn Unit at Washington Hospital Center where they were treated and released later the next morning.  Company 1 found and extinguished the fire which was located in the rear storage rooms only to have it re-ignite due to being natural gas fed.  They held the fire in check until the gas supply could be shut off from the exterior.  Battalion 111 (Chief Cornwell) had the Columbia Pike Command while Battalion 112 (Chief Blankensip) had Division C.  E107 second due, picked up the hydrant from the split lay from E101.  Crew of E107 advanced backup line into the front of the structure and assisted in extinguishing the fire.
