Each character has this or her own Musou Mode, like in Dynasty Warriors 3. Weapons are found rather than leveled up, except this time instead of one of each weapon type, you get to choose to keep whatever weapons you want, much like Samurai Warriors.
Duels have been removed and Versus mode is unavailable. Koei has also gotten rid of Create-a-Warrior mode.
You will find yourself swarmed with enemies and easily gain hundreds of kills in a matter of minutes, unlike Dynasty Warriors 4. The environments are more colourful, varied and beautiful compared to the fourth installment.
All of the existing characters have at least a minor change in their movesets, and all 48 of them get new jump charges as well as Charge 5 attacks.
Dynasty Warriors 5 uses a nearly identical graphical engine as DW4 did, however the draw rate has been greatly reduced and the slowdown is rare. Also, your allies' AI is stronger, so they can defend for themselves more often.
It also follows DW3's use of rock background music, and some of the songs from DW3 have been included in DW5.
The newest installment of Dynasty Warriors offers two new features as well, the Evolution Attack and the Musou Awakening. When certain requirements are met, The Evolution Attack triggers and allows any character to perform 9 moves instead of the usual 6. A new battle item found during stages is the Kakusei, which allows you to activate the Musou Awakening. In a period of 30 seconds, your power and speed is increased.

New modes:-
Destiny Mode: This mode allows you to reach your ultimate goal; becoming the commander of your own army. You start out as a lowly foot soldier, but as you gain ranks, you gain new fighting, strategy and leadership abilities. Fed up fighting with a particular kingdom? Destiny mode allows you to switch allegiances. You can also choose to side with different generals, which will give you skills or abilities that you may not otherwise have access to.
Xtreme Mode: In Xtreme mode, you are challenged to clear as many missions as possible. You do not recover at the end of the mission, so it is up to you to heal yourself and improve your abilities by purchasing items between stages. Not only do you have to fight in Xtreme mode, but you also have to recruit new officers, expand your territory, and control the economy. You can have up to six officers, (3 more than in Dynasty Warriors 4 Xtreme Legends), and can take 3 of them into battle at once. The deeds and items you receive in Legend and Destiny modes are converted into currency, which can be used to purchase items in Xtreme mode.
Legend Mode: In Legend mode, you find yourself with 18 new maps with historical and fictional scenarios. Some scenarios include the Battle of Yang Ping Gate, the first showdown between the Kingdoms of Wei and Shu at the Battle of Han Shui, and Cao Cao's attempt to capture Emperor Xian. As you clear each scenario, you will learn more about the relationships between characters as each explains his or her point of view.
Edit Mode: In Edit mode, you are able to customize your characters hair, face, clothing and headwear, with a total of 10 options for each part. In Dynasty Warriors 5 Xtreme Legends you can adjust the characters height and weight, (up to 30 levels each), plus, there will be 3 different voice options for both male and female characters. Edit characters can also use the weapons of the original 48 Dynasty Warriors. Edit characters can be used in Dynasty Warriors 5's Free mode and in Dynasty Warriors 5 Xtreme Legend's Legend and Xtreme modes.
Challenge Mode: 2 additional challenge courses have been added in addition to the original four courses from Dynasty Warriors 5. The first course, called Gatekeeper, has you defending a gateway against rushing enemies. The second course, Speed Strike, challenges you to destroy everything in your path within a given time limit.
The Camp and more: In Xtreme Legends Camp, you can use character and weapon power-ups found in Xtreme mode to power up fellow warrior's stats and weapons, or your own. Also available in this mode:
~7 rare items (including the 22 items from Dynasty Warriors 5).~
~4 difficulty levels, including a new Novice level.~
~New unique items (separate from the rare items above) can be used to power up
characters and weapons at the game's "Blacksmith."~
~A rebalanced weapon system gives heavy weapons more power.~

For the XBox360, this is the first next-generation Dynasty Warriors game to be released. Perhaps when the PS3 will be released, DW5 Special will be available for the PS3.
From 1UP.com :
"Admittedly, this is not a new game. Koei merely repackaged the same Dynasty Warrirors 5 that showed up earlier this year on PS2 and Xbox, but with a hefty graphical boost. The jaggies that plagued the PS2 version are nowhere to be found here, and the character models are gorgeously designed and animated. When characters attack, their motions have a very cinematic blur to them, and yet stay crisp and clean throughout the form. Moreover, there is no slowdown to be found, even when surrounded by a hundred soldiers and performing a True Musou attack. Draw distances have also been extended, allowing players to see groups of enemies far into the distance (even with fog of war!). This makes it much easier to pinpoint those oh-so annoying archers. Simply put, the game is gorgeous.
If you've ever enjoyed a Dynasty Warriors game, this is definitely worth a look. The crisp graphics, smooth control, and flawless animation make it the best of the series to date."
