He showed a great amount of leadership while participating on the freshmen quiz bowl team as well as the ag mechanics team. He was one of the first to turn in his sponsorship money which benefited to chapter greatly. Congratulations Lukas!
District Speaking Contest
The South West District speaking contest was held on November 10, 2009 at the Adams State Collage in Alamosa. The Durango FFA Chapter participated in four main events including Extemporaneous speaking, Prepared speaking, Creed speaking, and Quiz Bowl. In Extemporaneous speaking Courtney and Taylor placed in the silver category. Brittany and Dustrie participated in prepared speaking where Dustrie received first and Brittany received second. Ashley and Skkye were our two contestants for the creed-speaking contest where Ashley placed first and Skkye placed second in the District. The Durango FFA Chapter also took the over all high point chapter where we received the most points in the over all contest in the South West District. Dustrie and Ashley will be moving on to state where they will participate in prepared and creed speaking in Craig Colorado.
Taylor shows a lamb in the final round of the blue and gold FFA Showmanship Challenge in the 2009 LaPlata County Fair. August 8th, 10am- FFA Members from Durango showed off their livestock handling skills at the 3rd Annual Blue and Gold FFA Showmanship Challenge. This contest is made up of FFA members showing either in swine or beef with the top two from each species advancing to a final round where they will show a market lamb. Members showed their animals in Official FFA Dress. They can show any animal they would like as long as it is entered in the livestock show. During the show the FFA members are questioned about their knowledge of not only the animals but the FFA as well. An up coming sophomore stated that "the show was a success and she can’t wait for next year!" Immediately following the blue and gold show the FFA members made root beer floats and handed them out to the public as a way to promote the chapter. This years winners for swine were Brittany Stevens and second place went to Taylor Moore. The beef winner was Dustrie Marlatt and second place went to Chantel Campbell. The overall winner was Chantel Campbell. Special thank all our sponsors and congratulations to all of our winners!
Courtney, Brittany, Mallory, Taylor, Dustrie, Chantel, and Tryel all went to the 2009-2010 National FFA Convention on October 20-24th.

During the 2009 82nd National FFA Convention the Durango Chapter had a great eventful week. They flew in on Tuesday night and had a nice sit down dinner. The next morning they woke up bright and early to go have a tour of a baseball field. Not just any baseball field but the Indiana Indians baseball field led by the head grounds keeper. He led them through the everyday life of a grounds keeper and showed them the basics of his job. They got to see the lawn mowers, where the fertilizers and pesticides are kept, and the home teams clubhouse. After the tour the group went to the 1st session. They listened to the keynote speaker Mike Rowe from the well-known television show Dirty Jobs. He was very inspiring to many of the members and it was really a joy for them to attend the 1st session. Then they all went to the mall for a little shopping. The rest of the week was filled with events including the 2nd session where Taylor and Brittany got to go on stage to receive the 3 star chapter award. Only 341 out of 7,429 chapters get this prestigious award. "We are really honored to receive this award and have worked hard to get this far.” says Jr. Brittany. "Going on stage and national TV was a little intimidating but we were proud to receive this great award." said Jr. Taylor. After the awards the group had time to go to the Career Show where they went shopping in the FFA Mall and checked out all the informational booths. Later that night they went to Lucas Oil Stadium where Toby Keith performed to all the members. It was the first time to national convention for many of the members that went from the Durango Chapter, "It was extremely impressive to see that many members in their blue jackets fill the streets" says Sr. Tyrel. They also spent time at the Career Show where they played a game against a chapter from Utah called "think like your ag teacher” the Durango Chapter won with the Utah Chapter close behind and they were entered into the drawing to have National FFA Advisor Dr. Larry Case come to their school. Previous to the convention the members got two "buddies" from another chapter in Ponchatoula Louisiana and got to know them over the phone. Then at the Convention were able to meet their buddy in person and exchange gifts with each other. "Overall the Convention was a great success, our members acted well and set a good representation of the Durango FFA Chapter" says Advisor Mr. Ortiz. The Chapter is planning on attending again next year and to have just as much fun!
