Welcome to the Dunoon Argyll Page...The picture above is actually a postcard view of Dunoon Pier, looking over the east bay and beyond, courtesy of Whiteholm Publishers of Dundee. The picture was taken quite some time ago, and since then there have been some major changes to the Pier and the surrounding area, though this particular view hasn't really been affected too much by the changes.

Every year near the end of August, Dunoon hosts the famed Cowal Highland Gathering. This is the time of year when the town opens up its doors and it's hearts, not only to Pipe Bands and Highland dancers from near and far, but also to one and all from around the globe.
The Cowal Highland Gathering is really a wonderful event that brings people together from just about everywhere. The atmosphere is very, very special as fans of the Pipes & Drums, Highland Dancing, and Athletics enjoy the competitions, and celebrate the winning of the many prestigious Cups and Awards. Highland Heavy Athletics are also popular at the Games, and you can see entertaining events like the spectacular Caber Toss, The Shot Putt for Weight & Height, and the Scottish Hammer Throw. Amongst the many other conventional sporting events.

For many folks, its a real joy to witness each Bands arrival at Dunoon Pier, when each Band embarks on the traditional March through the centre of Dunoon, playing with great gusto! The Bands also repeat this tradition at the end of each Games, marching proudly through Dunoon, displaying their Cups and Trophies.......... oh its a great sight to behold! Each year The Cowal Highland Gathering is held at Dunoon Stadium, and it's wise to book your tickets and accomodation well in advance, because apart from the many piping enthusiasts, the event now attracts more than 3500 competitors. As you can see from the vintage photo above, the Cowal Highland Gathering has been a very popular event for quite a few years now.

This wee plaque can be seen in Dunoon's Castle House Gardens. It was placed there by Dunoon Town Council, relatives and friends of one of Scotland's most famous composers of pipe music. Dunoon's very own Pipe Major John Mclellan. DCM. |

|
P/M John (Jock) McLellan DCM was a poet, and composer who wrote many memorable piping tunes. In fact many of his compositions are still as popular now as they were when he first wrote them. You can discover Jocks piping melodies yourself in a new book which is now on sale! ' THE COLLECTED WORKS OF PIPE MAJOR JOHN McLELLAN, DCM OF DUNOON'. What does the publisher Bruce Campbell of Duntroon Publishing have to say about the man and his music?
- in my humble opinion The 'Collected Works' is sure to be of interest to all, and is available now at most good book shops.
