Okay, I
have now finished Katey, put a major on Andy and am floating on cloud
nine. I made sure I called Katey’s
breeder to let her know. This was a
Monday morning. By Monday afternoon we
had our third smooth collie!!! Smooths
are like potato chips, you can’t have just one….and all this excitement lead to
Haurand’s Little Miss Dune (Jennifer).
Now we had seen Jennifer during the summer of 1996, but couldn’t get her
because we had just purchased Andy. Her
breeder was calling her Little Miss No Name, so when I called Kathy about Katey
finishing she told me that No Name was still available and if I wanted her we
could co-own her until she finished….at no cost to me. Well….that’s all it took and we picked her
up that Monday afternoon. Her breeder
was calling her Jennifer by that time so we kept the name. But when we registered her we wanted to
incorporate part of Little Miss No Name into her registered name. So we came up with Haurand’s Little Miss
Dune, substituting our kennel name for No Name. Jennifer was a showing machine when it came to the ring. We picked up all of her championship points
without ever leaving the State of Virginia.
Katey and Andy had traveled to NC, MD and NJ to help with their
points. Jennifer finished her
Championship in August of 1998, just two months after Andy. Wow what a year that was for us. In January of 1999 we bred Jennifer for the
first time, with pups due the beginning of April. After we bred Jennifer I took a job with my brother-in-law
working as a Dresser for theatrical performances that came into town. Wouldn’t you know that the day my first
assignment was supposed to start Jennifer decided to whelp her litter. So for the next five weeks I was one busy
woman, trying to work at the theatrical production from 2pm til 1130pm and then
taking care of puppies once we got home.
Oh yeah, I was leaving the house at 530am with my hubby and we weren’t
getting home until almost 1am. Five
busy weeks to say the least….LOL. We
kept two puppies from that litter, but I will tell their stories later. In March of 2000 I found me a job working
full time. The day I got called for my
interview I had just wormed all the dogs in the kennel. I followed the directions and left them with
plenty of water. I went on the
interview and when I came back Jennifer had thrown up in her crate. I noticed that quite a few of the dogs were
sick and I was worried. All but
Jennifer bounced back. On March 15th
2000 our precious Jennifer left us for the Rainbow Bridge. Somehow, and we aren’t quite sure how, she
had punctured a lung. Unfortunately,
unlike humans whose lungs can heal and reinflate, dogs do not. To this day I carry the guilt that I am the
one who “killed” my precious Jennifer because I took the easy way out and
bought an over the counter worm medication instead of going to the vet. Jennifer was the start to our breeding
program and almost the finish of it.
She is sorely missed and would have been 12 on the 27th of
May 2008.
