Monarchs 3 v 0 Harris II
After two weeks on the road, Monarchs returned to Arbroath Sports Centre to take on a Harris II team that had taken a point off them last season. Since then both teams have had hugely different paths, with Harris II struggling somewhat, with numbers, whilst Monarchs have increased their club to a third team. Both teams started very tentatively and this was displayed in some slack passing, and increasingly worked up players. Both teams had chances to go ahead in the opening exchange, but neither were clinical enough to penalise the other teams slopiness. It was Monarchs who got it together first, and opened up the Harris defence, but McArtney could not get the ball goalward from his advanced position. It was not long however, until Monarchs got that all important opener. Vale moved down the pitch, and sent Ingram off on the right. He then returned the favour after taking out the keeper to VALE, who slotted away from a yard.
Monarchs were more direct in the second half and had more chances at goal. Short corners also produced shots at goal, which seemed to worry the opposition defence. Another sweet move allowed BRENT MITCHELL into the game and he took his chance well to open his scoring account with the club. Harris were increasingly finding it hard to get much time on the ball and it was another move which included a half dozen passes that allowed INGRAM to score his second of the season on the reverse stick.
Monarchs took their chances in the end, although it could have been a larger victory! Monarchs now take an enforced break from the league for two weeks, due to the odd number of teams in the league and a postponement from MBC, who turned over Menzieshill II 5-3 in their game.
Monarchs next game is in the Scottish Cup when they play Stepps, currently in the top spot in National League 2.
Monarchs II 1 v 0 Wanderers IV
Monarchs II were forced to work hard to gain this result in Arbroath on a sunny Sunday! Monarchs were firm at the back, and did not give too much away, leaving Wanderers fighting for scraps. Monarchs went close through a good run and cross by Brodie, but the ball would not sit kindly for the forward line of Hunter and Boag. Wanderers did manage to create a couple of short corners, one of which they scored from. This was chalked off however as the ball entered the goal higher than the designated 18 inches.
Monarchs started the second half in the same positive and determined fashion. Craig Munro playing alongside Boag was having a good game and it was one of his angled passes that almost let the Monarchs striker open the scoring. It was MARTIN BOAG who scored the only goal of the game, from a short corner. The shot from the top of the circle, was goal bound from start to finish and the Wanderers defence had no answer to its power. This spurred on the Wanderers team, and they rallied with a lot of late pressure. The Monarchs defence held firm however, although they did have keeper Mackay to thank for a number of good saves.
Monarchs II merited this win with some good determined hockey. Monarchs II are in action next weekend in the District Cup when they play Livingston H.C.
Gordonians II 3 v 1 Monarchs II
Monarchs defended well for fifty minutes, using luck more than once to keep the ball out of the net. Gordonians missed two penalties before Monarchs started to push themselves. Chances from Vale, Mitchell, McGuffin and Brodlie could have had the visitors in a comfortable position before half time. Gordonians became much tighter after the half time break and pushed hard. They opened the scoring and doubled their lead from short corners. Monarchs then chased the game pushing forward and were left short at the back. Gordonians goal of the game left Bell with no chance. Monarchs still did not give up and before the end they converted a corner when JAMIE VALE took the ball into the D and slotted home from the penalty spot.
Menzieshill III 0 v7 Monarchs II
Monarchs II continued on from last weeks excellent result with a fine win in the Midland League. Goals from CERQUETI, BOAG (3), THOMSON, BRODIE and WOODROFFE meant all three points would head back to Arbroath.

Granite City II 2 v 1 Monarchs Monarchs first venture to Aberdeen left the team frustrated that they gained nothing for a match that was there for them. Monarchs fell behind to a short corner with seven minutes to go until the half time whistle and it looked like it was going to stay that way until half time. A good sweeping move from left to right back and then through the channels involving Brent Mitchell and Fraser McGuffin, found JAMIE VALE in perfect position to slot home on the reverse stick. This should have been the wake up call for the club as the second half started, but they could not convert chances that were going a begging. Salt was rubbed into the wound further when Granite City stepped up from a short corner and although the first shot was saved, they were first to react and managed to force the ball over the line. Monarchs go into next weeks game, away to Gordonians, knowing that they must rally together and take chances when they are presented to them. Coach, David Hunter, will be looking for that positive reaction in training this week before selecting the team. |

Monarchs 2 v 1 AGSFP II Monarchs returned to Arbroath on Saturday to play their first home game of the season. This was to face Aberdeen Grammar who had beaten a strong Dundee Wanderers team the week before. The game started off at a quick pace with both teams trying to find their groove. This resulted in some hard tackles, missed passes and a lot of energy being expended. Monarchs had the first real chance from a corner after the first good move of the day. The resultant cross ended up touching a foot of the defender. A good save by the keeper kept the scores level. AGS continued to push down the right hand side and they were also working hard in the middle of the pitch. The deadlock was broken from a short corner, when the AGS forward put the ball back to the injector who nestled the ball into the goal. Monarchs reply was instant and positive. A good movement of play from the midfield up into the circle resulted in a deliberate stick tackle. CHRIS GRAY stepped up to slot home the resultant penalty stroke. Both teams pushed each other to the end of the half, with no show from Monarchs five corners. The second half pushed back with the rain into the home team faces, it did not seem to bother them however, as after about 15 minutes of the half they went ahead from DOUG INGRAM. A short corner was switched and although the first shot was saved, Ingram popped up to fire the ball home from three yards. This gave Monarchs a new confidence, and although the hockey was anything but neat and tidy, they stuck to the task at hand and worked hard to limit AGS to limited time in front of goal. A hard worked game, which puts Monarchs onto the 6 point mark in the league after two games.

Menzieshill II 0 v 3 Monarchs Monarchs new season kicked off shortly after 4pm at DISC in Dundee. Monarchs had a point to prove as they had never beaten their rivals and this was the first competative game since their playoff defeat in May. Coach Hunter (pictured below) selected a side with youth and experience throughout the team. Monarchs started shakily and it was Menzieshill who pressed for an opening early on. They could find no way past the back line however and this gave Monarchs the confidence to start to brand their own style of hockey. Monarchs were playing well down both of the wings and it was no surprise when they took the lead through a good move down the left wing. ? worked hard to create an opening before laying the ball into Brent Mitchell, who took the keeper out with a deft touch and allowing JAMIE VALE to open the scoring from a yard. This knocked the wind from Menzieshill and they even looked ordinary for the rest of the half and Monarchs continued to press for another goal. Both teams re-emerged from their team talks in the blistering heat to continue to their quest for an opening day three points. Menzieshill worked hard at the beginning of the half and pressed Monarchs hard. The only gain they got from this was two corners which were dealt with by keeper Derek Sim and Richard Burton. It was from one of these corners that Monarchs broke to score their second. Once again Steve Donald broke clear from a Giannico pass and laid the ball to Vale who saw the lurking FRASER McGUFFIN. He turned the keeper and the defence and slotted home. This sent the Monarchs bench into raptures. Menzieshill kept to their task trying to force an opening but their pressing was leaving gaps at the back and this helped create an opening for STEVE DONALD to accept a Giannico pass and slot it past the advancing keeper. Monarchs had other chances to extend the game further, but for some good keeping. Monarchs deserved their win today and this sets the standard that they must achieve every week if they are to maintain their place above MBC and their chance to restake a place in National 3! |
| Monarchs Hockey Club - The waiting is over! |
MONARCHS READY TO GO! Monarchs Hockey Club's wait for the new season is over. Monarchs first team will raise the curtain on the new season with an exciting derby against Menzieshill II. Monarchs will look to take the game to the hosts at DISC in Dundee when the game starts at 4pm. This will be Monarchs first game under the new coaching team headed up by David Hunter. A club spokesman commented, "We feel we are ready for this new season and new challenge. We set the barrier high last year and we need to make sure we can raise it further this season. Teams like MBC will be out to try and steal our playoff place and it is up to us to start off in the manor we mean to continue." Monarchs Hockey Club were involved in a playoff at the end of last season and missed out on promotion in penalties at the end of a tied game. |
CHAMPIONS! Congratulations to the Monarchs Hockey men and the Brechin Thistle Ladies players who merged together to win the mixed league set up within the Midland District. They team were undefeated throughout the league. Well done!

Monarchs II 6 v 0 Dundee Wanderers V Monarchs II 1 v 1 Madras Monarchs II took the last weekend of the season to record two more fine results at Arbroath Sports Centre. Martin Boag on Saturday scored the goal that ensured a point stayed in the Angus Town. On Sunday, the second team showed what they are capable of and taught Dundee Wanderers a lesson in hockey. Goals from Steve Donald (2), Kyle Hatch, Moray Brodie, Sui Cheng and Craig Munro secured a fine win that all in the club can be proud of. |
| 24th March 2007 |
Monarchs 1 v 5 Menzieshill II Monarchs started anything but brightly in this game, with a pushy Menzieshill team out to do the business should any of the top two teams slip up and allow them back in to the promotion hunt. Menzieshill were finding space all over the pitch and this resulted in two early goals. Monarchs shored up the ship following the second, for fifteen minutes at least, and started to play bits and pieces of hockey. Most notable was the reverse shot by Vale, which the 'Hill keeper did well to touch away. Monarchs were not the same sharp team as the last couple of weeks and once again they were found wanting when Menzieshill pushed hard once again before half time. This resulted in a further two goals. Monarchs made their way to halftime, and could have been on the scoresheet themselves, when Brodlie and Forbes worked together, but Ingram could not quite get his cross onto the end of Thomsons stick. Monarchs regained some of the plaudits with a grittier second half and more willing to push forward. Individual play, however, too often allowed Menzieshill to clear up any danger. Thomson once again had a chance at his predatory base of the back post, from a Vale cross. Monarchs finally seemed to be getting a bit of control on the game and pushed towards the 'Hill back line. This resulted in a string of corners, of which one was scored. Monarchs could have added to their tally, but for the lack of compusure when it counted. Monarchs will look to take the positives from the game and keep building towards their play off game in Peffermill on May 5th. |
| 24th March 2007 |
Monarchs II have now confirmed their place in the Midland League Division 1 for next season. They will concentrate on reaching for 2nd or 3rd in their remaining games. Aberdeen G.S.F.P. II 1 v 3 Monarchs Monarchs headed north for the second time in two week, confident they could overcome the team that had already succumbed to Monarchs earlier this season in Arbroath. Monarchs started very brightly and could have been ahead within 20 seconds courtesy of Fraser McGuffin, but he could not propel his shot on target. It was not long however before Monarchs did take the lead. A good move involving Vale and Marteau found McGUFFIN on the left side of the field. He worked his way across the top of the circle before slotting the ball past the keeper. Monarchs were dominating the proceedings and within 5 minutes, they had doubled their lead. A quick free hit from Marteau found STEVEN THOMSON and he calmly struck from 5 yards. Monarchs could have added to their lead through Vale, McGuffin, Gray within the next 10 minutes, but a range of misses, good saves and some desperate defending kept Aberdeen Grammar in the game. McKay at the other end was not the busiest of keepers, but produced an excellent save from a Grammar volley to keep his goal in tact. He also made an excellent save when Grammar did pull on back. The forward was the first to react and poke the ball over the line. Monarchs continued to dictate the pace of play into the second half and created numerous chances. The short corner team were also called into action, including one goal being disallowed for entering the goal above the standard 18". The third goal was the result of a short corner. Thomson received the ball outside the 5 yard hatching and released Gray who shot at goal. His shot was stopped by McGUFFIN, who controlled the ball and turned before placing it into the net. Monarchs continued to dominate all the way to the final whistle. This game was played in very good spirits by both teams and no cards were shown.
Menzieshill IV 2 v 2 Monarchs II Monarchs needed points to secure their future within the top Midland division. They did this courtesy of the draw. Goals from BOAG and BRODIE secured a point and safety, although only the precision of Boag from a penalty stopped Monarchs possibly leaving with 3 points. A further report could appear here if someone e-mails me! andrew.mcartney@btinternet.com |

STATISTIC CENTRE: From the OFFICIAL RECORDS, Monarchs Hockey Club scored their 100th outdoor goal over the weekend. Well done to all the scorers past and present. (we are actually at 101 - Goal Hunter - the '1' is yours!) Monarchs have now officially claimed their PLAYOFF spot. They will go into a one leg play off at PEFFERMILL, on May the 5th against one of the bottom National League 3 teams. Aberdeen Uni II 0 v 3 Monarchs Monarchs headed north with almost a complete first team, with hopes high that 3 points would officially claim that play off spot they so desired. Monarchs pushed from the start with McGuffin, Thomson, Vale and Gray all going close from both set pieces and open play. Aberdeen were quite happy to soak up pressure, ride their luck and then hit on the counter attack through their midfield which included former Monifieth player, Keiran Ubhi. Goalkeep Sim though, struggling with some sort of man flu thing, was never over stretched. It was a set piece move from outside the 25 which eventually let to the sides being split. A quick free hit into Thomson, who moved into space, allowed him to feed the pass to McGUFFIN, who calmly slotted home from 7 yards. Monarchs should have had another two or three goals, with chances going abegging. Half time saw the away team swap strips a la Man Utd, and return for the second half in their white strips, due to the suns angle proving difficult for both teams to distinguish. Monarchs started once again from the off and were once again unlucky not to be further ahead. It took a solo effort from McGUFFIN to double the lead, as he strode across the circle and reverse hit the ball into the bottom corner. This settled Monarchs nerves, and from here on in, the standard of hockey was good. Short passing, good movement and hard work all had a part in the third goal, and allowed LESLIE to get his first goal in the first team, and put the match beyond Aberdeen Uni's reach.
Monarchs II 8 v 4 Dundee Wanderers V Monarchs II wen behind early on, but rallied quickly and soon got level, before going three in front before the half time break. The second half proved just as fruitful for Monarchs II as a further 4 goals put the game well out of DWHC's reach. Scorers for Monarchs were: BOAG (3), DONALD (3), FORBES and BRODIE. A further report could appear here if someone e-mails me! andrew.mcartney@btinternet.com |
| 24th Febraury 2007 |
Harris II 2 v 2 Monarchs Monarchs, playing in this derby match at DISC, set out their stall early and worked hard for each other. The team welcomed back Doug Ingram who had been out with a broken collar bone since October and he slotted into the left back position left by Richard Burton. A fluid passing move nearly created an opening within ten minutes, but Fraser McGuffins shot flashed wide of the right hand post. Monarchs stuck to the game plan and it was the correct thing to do as the scoring was opened by MICHAEL FORBES. A passing mov resulted in Michael being free at the top of the circle and he made no mistake with the finish. Monarchs had other chances to score within the first half and good defending and goalkeeping by Harris kept it at bay. Monarchs continued to push in a game that they were in control of for long periods of time. Again Fraser McGuffin and Michael Forbes went close from crosses. Monarchs extended their lead with what was the best move of the game, starting off at left back. Three moves later and STEVEN THOMSON was on hand to score his second goal in two games for the first team since his call up. At this stage, Monarchs were in control, but Harris pushed the game and brought the defecit back to one almost instantly with a run and cross from the right being met by the attackers stick. Derek Sim in the Monarchs Goal tried in vane to keep the ball out. With two minutes left and Monarchs seemingly in with a good chance of taking all three points, a mix up in the defense let in Harris and their striker needed no second chance in slotting the ball home. Although mighty disappointing, Monarchs played very well for long periods of the game and worked hard for each other, which is one thing that may have been missing in previous matches. Monarchs still focus one league game at a time and next Saturday sees Dundee Wanderers visit Arbroath on their first visit to the new Monarchs home ground. |
| 17th February 2007 |
Monarchs 2 v 3 Granite City II Monarchs conceded a two goal lead to lose by the odd goal in 5. Monarchs were two goals up within fifteen minutes through Steven Thomson, who completed a good passing move at the back post and through Guz Bhachu, who netted when the ball was crossed from the left. It should have been plain sailing for the Monarchs team who were in control. Granite City, who did not have an open play shot all game, scored two from short corners before half time, and tied up the points with seven minutes to go from another corner. Not a good day for Monarchs all told.
Dundee Wanderers III 5 v 1 Monarchs II Steve Donald scored the only goal for Monarchs. Another highlight was the re introduction of George Winter, who has played for many seasons in the past. |
| Weekend - 3rd / 4th February |
February Saw Monarchs Hockey Club restart its outdoor programme. Two games were played at Abroath Sports Centre at the weekend where the Firsts and Seconds both modelled the new Strip, complete with RAF logo. Monarchs II 2 v 3 Menzieshill IV Steve Donald put the second team onto a dream start with a well worked move from the left hand side involving at least 4 Monarchs players. Menzieshill never gave up and worked there way back into the game to cancel out that goal and that of Guy Woodroffe who scored a good goal from the top of the circle. Menzieshill were contained for long periods of the second half and in fact at some points it looked as though it were the Monarchs team who had first team players in it! Towards the end of the game though, it was Menzieshill who sneaked the vital goal to take the points back to Dundee in the first League game since the winter shutdown.
Monarchs 0 v 4 Dunfermline Carnegie Dunfermline Carnegie visited Arbroath for the first time to officially launch the new Monarchs brand of hockey top. National Two side Carnegie took the game by the scruff of the neck and worked hard stretching the game. Monarchs, who are 2 full divisions below more than matched them for long periods of the game. Carnegie were decisive in front of goal. Carnegie Coach, Alan Lindsay, was positive towards the Monarchs set up, "You now have a great base to start from, a pitch, a solid foundation of a team, and from what I hear a good youth coaching structure. We worked hard from those starting blocks to get to where we are today. Good luck in your push for National League promotion!" |

National League Indoor 3 - Galsgow Cali Garscadden 18 v 2 Monarchs With a severely depleted team, Monarchs were well beaten. Two goals by Andrew McArtney and a string of good saves by Derek Sim were the obvious highlights. Monarchs 8 v 8 Dunfermline Carnegie Monarchs played this game back to back with the first. They found themselves down by 5-2 into the second half, before battling back to be 6-5 in the lead. Carnegie then took control again to go 7-6 up. A well worked goal by Jamie Vale brought Monarchs level, and another by Guz Bhachu put them in front once again, before Carnegie equalised with 24 seconds remaining. Other Scorers were: Jamie Vale (2), Chris Gray (2), Andrew McArtney and Richie McMurchie Monarchs 3 v 8 Inverleith II At half time this still looked possible, but with the lack of back up, a tired Monarchs capitulated and gave Inverleith their first points of the season. Jamie Vale scored two and Andrew McArtney scored from at least 4 feet outside the circle.
Midland League:
Monarchs II 2 v 2 Dundee Wanderers V Steven Thomson and Moray Brodie gave Monarchs a share of the spoils in this Midland League game, which was played on DISC (W) |

Reserve Cup (Outdoor). Gordonians III 3 v 0 Monarchs II Monarchs travelled north to face North League leaders and put up a good show. Steve Donald was awarded what appears to be the first card of the 2nd teams season and will now join the bad boys.
National League Division 3 Glasgow Caledonian Monarchs 2 v 9 Motherwell Monarchs travelled to Glasgow and were not up to speed on the first game. Motherwell raced to a 2 goal lead early in the game, Monarchs got back in the game with 2 goals from Stuart McArtney. Motherwell took control in the second half and pulled away to become comfortable winners. Monarchs 1 v 2 East Kilbride Monarchs controlled most of this game, but could not find their scoring touch in the small, tight hall. The game was locked at 1-1 for the vast majority of the game, with Jamie Vale netting for Monarchs. East Kilbride scored with 5 minutes to go to steal the points. Monarchs will look to do much better on the return fixture. |
Midland League Division 1 - Outdoor. Menzieshill III 1 v 3 Monarchs II Monarchs took this game by the scruff of the neck and ran out deserved 3-1 Winners. Goals from Martin Boag, Steve Donald and Moray Brodie, were enough to take the points.
National League Division 3 Monarchs 8 v 4 Quasar Monarchs started off their Division 3 campaign with a good hardworking win over a young Quasar side. Goals from Guz Bachru, Vito Giannico (2), Andrew McArtney (2), Neil Brodlie (2) and Stuart McArtney made sure that Quasar would not start off the season adding to the two wins from last season. Monarchs v Uddingston This match was abandoned 4 minutes into the second half. The first half had finished 1 v 1. Uddingston had just scored a goal from a short corner before the match (with two yellow and two red cards) was abandoned. Jamie Vale scored the goal that looks like it will never count! |

Monarchs were however pegged back before half time. Chris Gray opened the gap once again with a well executed strike, before Wanderers once again equalised from a corner. When Steve Donald put Monarchs ahead for a third time, the entire team worked like Trojans to make sure that the lead was not lost. An excellent game of hockey which Monarchs ran out deserved winners.
