All pet owners experience the passing on of their beloved friends. Although we grieve for the loss and we will miss them greatly, we must remember to celebrate their wonderful lives for they have enriched our lives more than they could ever know. Rainbow Rats are rats that have passed away and gone over the Rainbow, so to speak.
As a rat breeder, I have inevitably had to deal with death as well as new life. I dedicate this page to some of my Rainbow Rats.
Some of the rats listed belonged to Tess Miller, co-founder and former breeder at DT.

The first pair of boys that I bought were from a local pet store. One day, I walked in the door of a local pet store with Tess and before we knew it, we had made new furry friends. Little did we know that these rats would become favorite companions, and our interest in rats would become more like an obsession. Murdoc was a squishie agouti dumbo male who was named after the fictional bass guitar player of Gorillaz. Mandark was a big fawn dumbo male who was named after a villian on Dexter's Laboratory. They were a playful pair for years. I will never forget the night I stayed up with Murdoc crying while he was dying. He was the first one to go, and it was the hardest. He was a great big sweetheart and in my list of Top Three Favorite Rats of All Time. [Ashley]
Mikayla
was also a pet store rat. She was an agouti berkshire dumbo female. She
was the first female that I ever had thanks to Tess. Tess bought
Mikayla as a cagemate for Molly and Maybe, but the girls didn't get
along. One day I was playing with Mikayla on the floor and Tess said,
"Oh good, she likes you! She's your's." Mikayla had a litter with
Mandark that produced 12 babies. I kept one of her daughters as a
cagemate for her; Louise was like her little mini-me. They were a great duo. [Ashley]

Flynn and Munster were two brothers that I adopted from Tekka Maki Rodentry. They were my first rats from a rattery. Flynn was an American blue rex. Munster was a black English-Irish double rex dumbo. Flynn was always more interested in exploring, while Munster was more of a lap-rat. He was the kind of rat I could carry around in my hoodie the whole day and he'd be perfectly content. Although Munster wasn't as "pretty" as his brother, his wonderful personality more than made up for it and he could charm his way into anyone's heart. He was my favorite rat of all time and I miss him terribly. [Ashley]
RainCloud came to the rattery in 2004 from Jayda's Critter House in
Michigan. She was an American Mink Dumbo. She gave birth in 2005
to a litter of 13 babies, all of which have found good homes. She
is the mother of two of our beloved boys that have also passed on their genes. She was a very jumpy girl who never
really had the patience to sit around and be cuddly, but she was
friendly nonetheless and enjoyed running up to my hands and nibbling me
so that I would "chase" her while she bounded away. She will be
very missed here, she was my first Dumbo female in years. [Tess]
Over the years and all the lovable rattie faces that enrich our lives at the Dumbo Tree, every once in a while there is that certain someone. That one rat that will hold an extra special place in your heart... one that you will NEVER forget. Anna was one of them for me. Anna was like Molly, she was a rattie I thought of as more of an incredible best friend than a lovable pet. I bought her in the Fall of 2004 from a pet store. She was a plain Black Standard Berkshire with an incredible fiesty temperament and a playful nature. I spent hours with her running up and down on the couch or the bed with me, and she had a hysterical habit of stealing any piece of loose paper that she could find in the room to run off with and hide under a chair. She gave birth to our first official litter at DT, and had four perfect babies. Her son DT Ruben was our keeper. She will always be remembered, and it will take a long time to recover from not seeing her face at the bars of her cage every day when I wake up in the morning. [Tess]
DT Ruben (a black rex) was born in December of
2004. That litter was the first official litter of DT, and it was
between Tess' beloved Anna and my sweet Boogeyman. From the start,
Ruben took after his father and was a total squish. He loved to get all
the attention he could, and he was always ready to give kisses in
return. He was the faithful side kick to his buddy Brutus, and the two
of them could often be seen cuddling in a hammock or grooming one
another. Though we did not use Ruben for any breedings, his memory will
live on. [Ashley]
Sputnik celebrated her 2nd birthday
in April of 2006, but sadly she was not with us much longer. Sputnik was one of my favorite rats of all time and she was such
a great companion. She was such a squish of a girl, always wanting to
snuggle, give kisses, brux and boggle. Saying she will be missed is an
understatement. Though she was my rat, she was a friend to all who met her. Not to mention she was a beloved member of a mischief of females. I adopted her from Soleil Rattery in order to be
a companion for my female Aine after Aine lost her cagemate. Sputnik
quickly wormed her way into my heart with her beautiful face, big ole
dumbo ears, "zipper" rex coat, and most of all, her sweet personality.
She was the mother of two of my litters, the Black & Blue 2005 Litter and the Halloween 2005 Litter. Seeing how many of her babies and grandkids and even great-grandkids are still with
us is an indication of what a
great rat and mother she truly was. She was the mother of our Russian
blue lines and her descendants will continue to grow in numbers in
honor of her revered memory. (She was also "Miss August" in the 2006 NIRO calendar.) [Ashley]
Brutus
was born in November of 2004. He was bred by a hobby breeder and friend
of Ashley's, and he was a direct descendent
from the very first litter we raised. He was
a strikingly handsome boy with a very soft &
shiny coat. He was also very friendly and gentle, despite his
name! From the moment he came to live with me when he was 5 weeks old,
he was the constant companion of DT Ruben
since they were born within days of each other. The two of them would
cuddle, sleep next to one another in the hammock, share food and groom
each other all day. If I wanted to get a photo of just one of them, I
would have to physically pick up the other rat and hold on to him while
snapping the photo or else they'd be snuggling with each other. After
Ruben's death, Brutus' health took a turn for the worse. He missed his
companion as much as I did, and it pained me to see Brutus so depressed
and unkept. Though his other cagemates did what they could to helpt
keep Brutus' health and spirits up, they couldn't replace Ruben, so
Brutus followed his soulmate over the bridge shortly after his death. [Ashley]
Pogo reminded me so much of her mother Sputnik, I couldn't bear to adopt this girl out to anyone else. She was from our Halloween 2005 Litter. She
had such a playful and friendly personality, she got along with all
other rats and people. I dubbed her "Pogo" because of her bouncing
personality. Only when she was nearly 2 years old did she slow down and
become the nurturing matriarch of her cage that she was until she
passed away. She was the mother of the Mickey Mouse 2006 litter and the descendants of that litter are still with us today. [Ashley]

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... - Author unknown
