My love of rats began in 2000 when my friend Tess Miller and I walked into a local pet store and found baby dumbo rats for sale. My love for breeding and raising rats began only two weeks after we brought our new rats home when one of Tess' females gave birth (we were not aware the rat was pregnant when Tess brought her home, but we later learned this is not uncommon when buying pet store rats). We did not officially start breeding until 2004, when we formed The Dumbo Tree Rattery. For the first two years Tess and I worked as a team, deciding which rats to pair up for breeding, raising babies and meeting adopters. In 2006, Tess decided to take a break from the rat world for a while. She no longer owns or breeds rats, but will likely own them again in the future.
