Dukes Golfing Society comprises mostly of 'old' squash players and their friends who used to play the game of squash in the Dukes Squash Club, Airport Road, Cork, Ireland.
Squash being a strenuous and onerous game requires a young and agile body to be played properly, and therefore does not appeal to the average player when they reach the age of 40 or over, who tend to drift away from the game. In 1989 when some older members of Dukes no longer felt comfortable striking a moving ball, a golfing society was set up so that these players could still participate in the 'club' atmosphere. Thus the Dukes Golfing Society was born. Even though the game of squash and golf are individual sports, they are still poles a part as regards technique, but golf offers an opportunity to maintain the competitive and the social spirit of being part of the club, (with the emphasis being on social rather than competitive).
So Dukes Golfing Society was set up just at a time when the game of golf was expanding enormously in Ireland and indeed world-wide. Most of the original members have now switched over to playing golf as their primary sport and have joined golf clubs to pursue their goals, however they participate in the society golf for the social aspect.
Ironically the Dukes Squash Club ceased to exist in 1999 in its 21st year of existence when the club premises was torn down and changed into a car park, but the club spirit still lives on in the Dukes Golfing Society.
In the same year Dukes Golfing Society transferred up the road to our new local The Bull McCabes
The Bull McCabe's
The Bull's has established
itself as one of the premier watering holes in Cork. The
friendly and efficient staff are always happy to serve you.. The
pub gets its name from a character in a John B. Keane play called 'The
Field'. The popularity of lunch at The Bulls McCabe's can be measured by the amount of cars in the car park at lunchtime. They have recently introduced evening meals which are also proving to be very popular.
