This section is for various software that are essential for Laptop under Fedora Core 4. Tested using Toshiba Portege R100, Toshiba Portege M200 and Acer Travelmate 240.
Fedora Core 4 default multimedia player is Totem, but seems due to some copyright/license
issue, Totem becomes not very smart in handling multimedia format such as avi and mp3.
Therefore you will need to update your totem codec library.
Totem player needs several new dependencies rpm to make it able to play .avi and mp3 files format. Thus after acquiring information's from http://www.gnome.org/projects/totem/ , I go to http://stentz.freshrpms.net/ to install these rpms :
gstreamer-ffmpeg
gstreamer-plugins-extra-audio
gstreamer-plugins-extra-video
gstreamer-plugins-extra-dvd
gsm ->dependencies
libmpcdec ->dependencies
swfdec ->dependencies
If your totem have difficulties loading, you might want to change around the configuration
using the multimedia gui under gnome.
You can also install XMMS (clone of winamp) to handle your mp3 files, but if you have updated your totem, then your totem can handle the mp3 which makes your need for xmms is just for preferences.
Other linux video player that you can choose to install are :
1. VideoLan - a very stable video player, you can get them via yum
2. Mplayer -> a good video player, you can get them via yum
3. Xine -> a good video player, you can get them via yum
basically all three player is good player with some weakness and advantanges over the others. its generally
a good idea to have all of them installed.

Because I need to access my windows XP comp to access some file thus I need to get smbclient working for accessing windows xp share folder.
Use command smbclient //yourwindowsipnumber/shared-folder and press enter on password or input password if needed.
Got gnome file browser to access windows share by go to
Places -> Computer ->File->Connect to server->service type : Windows Share->server: your windows ip number / computer name -> folder -> your shared folder.
And it will mount the shared documents in the desktop.
Note : Computer name eg. //superduckz/shared and superman ip eg. 192.168.2.122, how to check the names?, go to your windows and open windows explorer, click on your shared folder and look at the address bar in the explorer, it should say //blah/blah, that is your name and folder name.
I installed the samba rpm to achieve this. And also edited the /etc/smb.conf file which is very much straight forward except when i failed to enable the WINS support, FC4 fails to use names but succeeded when i use ip instead of names.
I didn’t bother to make samba shares in my laptop that can be accessed from winxp box.
This is a very usefull small program to edit your gnome menu. Sometimes when you installed program directly from source and if its not a gnome or Fedora Core compliant, you will have to access the program from shell. This is a usefull program for viewing installed system font, you can download it via yum.
A program for connecting to your digital camera, check here for more information and digital camera compatibility.
