Sublime

BRAD NOWELL (guitar, vocals)
ERIC WILSON(bass)
BUD GAUGH (drums)

Take reggae, punk, rock, blues, surf, & jazz. Mix it all up and put it on wax, then you get Sublime. From the streets of Long Beach, CA, Sublime was, and still is one of the biggest bands from Southern California. Sublime's music is featured in many movies, and is big in the surf, skate, and snow scene. Sublime was at many warped tours and toured alll across america.  Sublime started in 1983 when Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh lived across the street from each other. Erics' father was a music professor and taught Bud how to play drums. So Eric, & Bud started the Juice Bros. with vocals of  Dan Mcmillan. Juice Bros. lasted only a year. Eric & Bud were in many garage bands that never made it past the garage. Until Eric was at a bar in downtown Long Beach and met Brad Nowell who was looking for a drummer and a bass player to start a band with. with Brad's smooth guitar riffs, and his melodic vocals Eric knew that they should jam together. Well Eric called up Brad, to come over and jam. So Brad met bud, they all hoppd onto there instruments played a few tunes and Sublime was made. In 1984 there first video, "ebin", was made in the back yard of a beach house in Redondo Beach. Then came there first album "40 oz. to Freedom", with hits like "badfish", which is played on the radio to this day. In 1993 they dropped there second album "Robbin' the Hood". After there second album they tried to get signed to a big label like MCA, Warner Bros., etc. But everyone turned them down, said its missing something and it not what there looking for. Brad took the blam for the bands failure. He thought that it was his fault for the bands missing flavor. he soon realized it was the lyrics that they need more . He looked toward other musicians and there lyrics and like Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Kobain, Red Hot Chilli Peppers...Then he realized that all the singers to all of those bands were or are heroine attics. So for a while he tried this "expirement" on there new album that they were recording. meanwhile Bud was sent to rehab for a year so Kelly Vargas stepped in to rplace Bud. But when Bud got out of rehab Bud stepped back in and continued for the ride. All trough the recordings of the self-titled album "Sublime" Brad was high on heroine writing songs and recording songs in the studio. He was taking heroine more vigorously than ever. Later on Brad was at a party and was busted for possesion of narcotics and was sent to rehab. When he got out he promised his fiance, Troy and the Band that he was through with heroine. A month later Brad and Troy were married in Las Vegas, NV, and soon a baby on the way. A few weeks later Sublime was back on the road  playin shows all through California. In 1996 at oneof there shows in San Fransisco Brad was really nervous. This was going to be one of the biggest shows they have ever played and he felt like the band was slipping again. That night he purchased $5,000 on heroine. The next day, May, 26, 1996  Brad Nowell was found dead in his hotel room. He had died from an accidental overdose. The shocking news struck family, freinds, fans everywhere. No one knew he was even on heroine because he was such a happy positive person all the time. A month later Jacob Nowell was born without a father. The self-titled album "Sublime" came out and went platinum, and was on the top 10 list for months. The song "what i got" won a grammy at the grammy awards. Bud and Eric accepted the award in memory of Brad. Later on MCA records signed them on and dropped Sublime's "Greatest Hits". Then a Live Compilation titled "Stand By Your Van". Then a album of remixes and songs never released called "Second-Hand Smoke". Then an Intimate Acoustic compilation "Sublime Acoustic: Bradley Nowell & Freinds". Brad died leaving a son, a wife ,and a band behind. Brad's music was truly unique.  It was filled with passion and when he sang he would sin his heart out and went for it all the way.  He would sit on street corners and just play his guitar and sing.  His art and his creativity can only be described as a gift. Brad was one of those great people that are hard to come by.  Kurt Cobain had that same inspiring influence on the world but he did not have the simplicity that Brad had.  Brad has so much honesty in his voice.  For example in the song "Pool Shark"  the very last lyrics of the song are "One day im gonna lose a war."  He performed this song with so much emotion that the crowd could feel the pain in his heart as he sang the words.  The words of his heart have changed peoples' lives.  They have made a few of this generation not want to face the consequenses Brad faced the last few years of his life. Brad was an inspiration to many of his fans and to many musicians of today.  His music, his life, and most of all his passion will never be forgotten...
