MMO Reveiws

I been checking out a couple free online games over the past
few weeks, and here's what I thought of them.

The king of all MMORPG's World of Warcraft, fun game, not free, but it rocks.   Levels come so easy up to 20, graphics style kicks ass, and you can play an undead character.
the downside is lots of grinding, lots of "collect 200 of these" quests, and while i like the PVP,
the other faction alwasy seems to screw around, 4-5 level 60's against 1 level 20, corpse camping,
exploiting bugs to get an advantage (was repeatedly killed in hammerfall by someone staying outside far away from guards
and shooting THROUGH the walls at me.) and ones who use hackers make it tempting to move to a PVE area at times, and if you're into RP,
good luck, as even the RP servers have more characters named Roxxors or Tinytitties and conversations that run " I PWNED him!! lololzzzzz"
fortunatly, i don't really play online games for RP, but L33t speak is still pretty annoying, as well as some of the terms and nicknames other players like to use, A level 60 mounted Paladine charging at your troll shaman is NOT an 'ally' I don't care if it's short for alliance, an ally is someone generally on your side, stop calling the opposing team allys already!

Now we get into some of the free ones, which this is mostly about:

Fly For Fun:  it's an anime style game, once you get to level 20 you get a board you can fly on
even better!, completely free, but you do get what you pay for, avatars aren't very customizable and your choices are the preeteen bishy boy
or preteen girl, eitherone's easy to mistake for the other, and you won't look much different from anyone else until you get better armor.
and it does seem to crash somewhat frequently, but still, it's one of the better freebe games and worth downloading.

OZ: also anime style, nice graphics, even if you really can't customize avatars at all, not much combat though, seems to be mostly wandering around towns meeting other players and fishing, they seem
to be pushing it more as a 'meet a girl' kind of game, but I do like the fishing, it's a little more in depth than in WoW. and
the scary part is that the male characters wear thongs under their clothes (the sight of a prepubesenct anime male running by in a thong as im trying to fish has given me many nightmares)
aside from the fishing, it's pretty boring, got bored and uninstalled it after playing for a few days.

There:  kind of like 2nd life lite, everything apears to be user created, and there's always events being coordinated, plus you start
out with a hoverboard, which is pretty kick-ass to use.  Avitars aren't too customizable, you have to buy clothes and hair to make yours stand out from the hundreds of others,
but the vehicles are pretty cool (hoverboard and dunebuggy)  the graphics are ok, and there are some different emotes and expressions,
and some spots where you can have different actions depending on where you are. The main point seems to be events and groups.
Everyone's in a group which in turn does an event, usually races, but there have also been concerts and beuty pagents, as well as other contests.
Sadly no combat though.  It seems buggy at times, ground will sometimes disappear, or objects will become jumbles of jagged polygons out of the blue, but for the
airboarding and events (some cool, some sucky) it's not bad.

IMVU: more of a 3D Instant Messenger/chatroom than a game, avatars are kind of customizeable with starting items and clothes,
and a few hundred credits to get a couple more skins or clothing, after that you have  to pay real world $$ for them (the credits that is)
mostly the only use i see for it is if you have a bunch of friends on it already, or cybering if that's your cup of tea (they have adult only items,
but since i was checking all these out mostly for this article and didn't want to pay money, nor did i really care about
their 'restricted' section, i didn't bother) i guess if you want an IM thats more graphical in nature,
go for it, I'm sticking with AIM and Yahoo.

Worlds3d:  crappy graphics, you start out as a penguin, but can change your avi to anything else, frankly thouhg,
they all look like crap.  Environents look like old-school DOOM.  And this is another one that seems more
for social stuff than anything interesting, (yes I like meeting other players in games, bu I also like going out and killing monsters with them
too).  dull, not even any fishing.

Adventure Quest:  It's a 2D sidescroller mmorpg, but not bad, wholly browser based, combats pretty decent, and you can get pets.
it's not as in depth as others, and compared to 3D, the 2D is alright at best, but it's great for killing time fighting
monsters, go play it

Urbandead: browser based and mostly text, (you read whats happening). It has a grid based map you move around of a city under a zombie epidemic.
You can play a zombie or human character, and if your human dies, he comes back as a zombie! you wander around the city avioding zombies,
or killing them if you think you can, finding supplies, barricading in buildings for the night with other players, basically everything you'd do in a real zombie outbreak,
and on the zombie side, you roam around eating brains.  pretty sweet for it's lack of graphics.
and it's always improving.

Second Life:  nice graphics, not as good as WoW but still enough to make my comp crash? (WoW works fine) had to play on my brothers comp.
basically seems to be the closest to a full online world, i could see the internet becoming like this in a few years.  everything is user created.
you buy in game land with RL $$ and build your building, shop, city, whatever.  the ingame cash can be traded in for real cash
(about 1,000 game $ for each $1 in real life) avatars are fully customizeable, and there's plenty of freebe's players give out,
I have seen moogles, space marines, have Optimus Prime armor, seen winged furries, etc. there's
plenty of ways to make in game cahs (you can just sit in some chairs for a few hours and get in game $)
and some people have made their in-game businesses, their real businesses.  there's casinos, concerts,
a matrix/ghost in the shell area, cityies, vehicles, some areas have combat, guns, swords, anything,
it's completely open. there's even strip clubs and wierd freaky sex shops (scary)  It is kind of buggy, sometimes i'd keep walking in a straight line through buildings, and occasionally fall through the ground.
otherwise if your comp can handle it, and you have a credit card or bank acount (won't let you make an account without one, even
though it's free) go for it.

Furcadia: played this for a day, it just isn't my thing, while i like the open endedness of it, and the user created aspect,
it just wasn't for me.  it's isometric graphics, wich arent bad, but your avi only changes color, male and female look identicle,
it's a little TOO open ended and many places are devoid of other players, there's some combat if your in a world where it was included.
I just can't get into it because it's so steeped in the furry sub-culture, i like catgirls as much as any other anime fan, but
i don't need a dog or bird girl asking me if i want 'yiff'.  5 seconds after having 'yiff' explained to me, i logged out and uninstalled the game.
it's just too freaky, sorry.

There were others I was planning on checking out, Gunz freezes at the character creation screen, Anarchy online (which is free now) takes
too long to download and my comp starts running out of disk space partway through.  Face of Mankind I couldn't even get the download to work.
E.V.E. looked kick-ass, but it needs a credit card or bank account # just for you to play the trial period.

Neopets I've played before, fell out of interest, it's pokemon online.

Mushes and all, aside from Urbandead i wanted to focus on graphics based games,
and honestly i havent played many mushes.

so thats the MMORPG's i've checked out, and my thoughts on them, still play FLYFF, Urbandead and occasionally when my brother's comp is free, 2nd life,
and of course, always WoW.

most of these games I've found here, if you want to check any out yourself  http://play-free-online-games.com/games/games_all.html
