

Geoff Howes answered the call of National Service and joined the army in February 1960 enlisting in the Army Catering Corps. In 196? he went on a tour of British Guiana when the country was in the finishing stages of its movment to overthrow its government. After serving in Germany he was attached to the Coldstream Guards and was posted in 1973-1974 to Cyprus with the UN, he witnessed the Invation of Cyprus by the Turkish Army and had to supervise his checkpoints and Turkish Forces. As part of the UN his power was limited and on many occations was stopped by Turkish troops at checkpoints whilst they finnished shelling civilian towns with no military gains involved from doing so. After Cyprus he served with many different units between Britain and Germany. Being commisioned in 1979 he worked his way up through the ranks and retired as a Major. His career lasted 34 years and even after retirement he worked as an ex-officer for the army in logistics.
