Original tutorial
by Judy Black
here
This is what
we will be making

Thanks to Judy
for letting me "add-on" to her tutorial.
I claim no right to the original tutorial.
The technique
belongs to Judy.
What you create from this tutorial is owned solely
by you.

Paint Shop Pro
here
- I would think any version will work
- I am using
Version X2
There are no
outside filters.
Use of the
Mesh Warp or Warp Tool (I prefer the Mesh)
The steps I
have taken are just a guide. If you are working with a different size,
then
you will need to adjust accordingly.

This is my
process. To do it Judy's way, go to her tutorial here
File>New>New
Image
700 X 700
Pixels, 72.000 Resolution
Raster
Background, Transparent, OK
Preset Shape>Rectangle Tool
Anti-Alias
checked, Create as Vector checked
Material Palette>Foreground
null, Background - choice of fill or color
I like denim,
so that's what I will be using :-)
Draw out an image around 100 X 50 Pixels
(I work from left to right)
When you have
something you like, Layers>Convert to Raster Layer
Apply a texture if you like
Layers>Duplicate
- with
your Mover tool, slide the top layer to the right about halfway past
the original
image. I've lowered the opacity of the bottom layer to show you
where the placement of mine is and also, we will be shading
using the Darken/Lighten tool

Lighten/Darken Tool> Click on the original layer
Size - 20>Hardness - 8-10>Step - 10>Density &
Thickness - 100
Rotation - 0>Opacity - 36 (just a guide)
Mode - RGB,
Swap mouse Buttons checked - this will get you the darkness
Unchecking,
will get you the lighten OR you can use the right and left mouse
button
Use the Darken
tool on the original layer and add some darkness>
Switch between
the dark and light to give it depth and character>
When finished
with that one, highlight the duplicated layer and do the
same thing to it>
Continue this
process until you have all the pleats that you want
Very
important!! Duplicate one of the pleats for later use. This will
be our corners!
With the
Mover tool, just move to the top or the bottom out of your way
Effects>3D
Effects>Drop Shadow - add this to each layer

**You can
leave the Pleats just as they are and merge visible, or you can
do the following:
Highlight
the very first layer which should be the one to the farthest
left
We will do a
series of minor rotations on each layer
Image>Free
Rotate>

Alternate
between left and right; 1-2 Degrees each time
Once you have
all the pleats shaded, shadowed, rotated and all other layers
closed off...
Layers>Merge>Merge
Visible
With the Mover tool, move the ribbon to the bottom
**This isn't
a perfect frame project. This is a scrappy type frame so it
doesn't need to be perfect in alignment**
Layers>Duplicate, Image>Flip
Layers>Duplicate, Image>Free
Rotate - 90 Degrees to the Right/Left
Layers>Duplicate, Image>Mirror
You should
have all 4 sides now. You may have to move them
so they over
lap just a bit on the corners

Layers/Merge/Merge Visible
Unhide
the single pleat you duplicated and highlight the layer. Move it
toward the middle because we will be rotating it
Image>Free Rotate, Right at
45 degree angle, Single layer checked, OK
With the
Mover tool, move it to the bottom left hand corner

Click on the Mesh Warp tool - Looks like this...

Settings>Mesh
Horizontal at 15, Mesh Vertical at 15, Show Mesh CHECKED,
Edge Mode at
Background, Draft quality at High, Final Apply at Best Quality

Were
gonna squish this piece to fit somewhat in the corner. It
doesn't have to be perfect! Just CUTE!! You may have to apply
several times and also, change your grid
To do that,
just click on the arrow for what ever direction you need to go
I used the
eraser and erased just a bit to smooth this piece. Once your
happy or at least finished with this pleat

Layers>Duplicate,
Image>Mirror,
Layers>Duplicate, Image>Flip
Layers>Duplicate,
Image>Mirror
You may
have to use the Mover tool to move the pieces into place
Layers/Merge/Merge Visible

***OPTIONAL***
Preset
Shape Tool>Rectangle>Anti-alias CHECKED>Create as Vector CHECKED,
Line Style>Small Dash (or what ever you would like), Width - 3.00
Materials
Palette>Foreground set to a contrasting but not outrageous
color
Background
null
Draw out a
size that will fit comfortably over your frame that should be
merged by now. If not, just make sure you're on the top layer.
Objects>Align>Center in Canvas
***
Trick... if your frame is not centered, guess what!? There's a
neat little "script" that comes in PSP that will center it for
you! Yayyy!! Providing you have your frame merged. :-)
If you don't have your Script Toolbar visible, just go to
View>Toolbars>Script. Click on it and you will have your script

Layers>Convert
to Raster Layer
**Note: I
used the Mesh Warp Tool to push the corners in a bit so it
wasn't so square looking**
Darken/Lighten
Tool>Settings as above. Increase the size of the brush a bit and
shade the frame some just under the stitching. This helps to
bring out the stitching with out using a drop shadow.
We
are finished with the Pleated Ribbon Frame. You can dress it up
now and show all kinds of pretty pictures in it.
