In 1989 Drewermann published his most explosive book - Clergy: Psychology of an Ideal = Kleriker: Psychogramm eines Ideals. 3rd ed. 2001, which led to his silencing at the behest of then-Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI). More than a dozen years before the American media exposed the church sex abuse scandal in the U.S., Kleriker revealed how the Vatican's clergy ideal was prone to produce an infantile clergy mentality that made clergy susceptible to all sorts of sexual repression, suffering, and acting out, including pedophelia. Speaking out against the suffering imposed on the clergy and the victims by the Catholic hierarchy, Drewermann shows in detail how the authoritarian form of Vatican theology produces unspeakable pain within countless clergy who have literally been forbidden to love and to be themselves, and how this, in turn, leads to harmful effects in society at large due to a poisoning of the religious sense, including pedophilia and the many hypocrisies of 'official' faith. |

With the publication of his book Der Krieg und das Christentum [War and Christanity] (1982), later republished as Die Spirale der Angst [The Spiral of Anxiety] (1992), Drewermann began to speak out against the terror of war. The first Iraq war of 1991 propelled him into the spotlight as one of the most outspoken anti-war activists in Germany. His speeches were published in book form as Reden gegen den Krieg [Speeches against War] (2002) . Inspired by the examples of nonviolence of Jesus, Ghandi, and M. L. King, and a psychological, sociological, historical, anthropological, and philosophical understanding of the dynamics of war, he has ever since called for an end to war--period!, be it during the war in the Balkans, the Nato-war against Afghanistan, or the current U.S. led war against Iraq. War is not the answer, but only breeds more violence. It always perpetuates the futile attempts to solve violence by means of more violence.

Drewermann, a committed vegetarian, will address vegetarians from around the world at the 38th IVU World Vegetarian Congress, Dresden, Germany. The motto of the congress is “100 Years of Food Revolution.” The organizers write: Drewermann's "belief that animals also have a right to respect and life culminates in his alternative Lord's Prayer: “Lord, forbid our daily meat, give us today our daily bread". Prof. Drewermann does not only preach a new side of Christianity, he also lives his belief in a modest, unpretentious and of course vegetarian way."
