Substance Abuse in the 21st Century

Substance abuse is a major problem in the technologically advanced 21st century, and includes the misuse of alcohol and other substances.  Although alcohol is a legal substance, there is also tremendous misuse and abuse of precription and over the counter (OTC) drugs.

In order to protect the public, the United States Departmement of Transportation (DOT) has established regulations and guidelines concerning the use and abuse of alcohol and other substances in the workplace.  Businesses, institutions, and organizations that adhere to the U.S. DOT guidelines are required to randomly test employees for the use, misuse, and abuse of alcohol and other substances.  If an employee tests positive, he or she may be given the opportunity to participate in a Substance Abused Education and/or Treatment program in order to remain employed.

The employee must complete an assessment and evaluation by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).  The SAP is qualified, by education and professional experience, to assess and determine if the employee must complete substance abuse education and/or treatment.
