The phoenix circles over head, singing a haunting and mournful song. His partner has been stolen away from him, by dark forces unseen. his song, normally a happy chortling melody, has become sullen, dark. More beautiful than before, only in a mournful way. Soul tears stream from his eyes, and people for miles around are struck by the songs dark beauty. Throughout the land, a day of mourning has taken over from what should have been a happy day, the first day of spring. A mysterious shining light appears from the west, a unexpected, and by many unwanted, light shining spiteful of the sorrow filling the land. The phoenixes song is one of longing and reminds everyone of something that they have lost. While the phoenix says nothing, everyone knows who the song is meant for, and at the same time feels the loss, both their own and the phoenixes. A long night passes with the phoenix continuing his unending sorrowful flight.
A morning light creeps across the valley that used to be the phoenixes home. A group of foragers come across a pile of ashes, the last bed of the phoenix. As they approach it, a blinding light is flashes from the pile of ashes, and twirling around the pillar of light two birdlike forms are seen, and they are both singing the most beautiful song of all.
