Dragon's Nest Pottery

from the beginning

Each dragon begins life as a piece of  clay in my hands, the size of the clay lump determining the size of the Dragon. I use only New Zealand stoneware clay sourced from the Nelson area. No moulds are used, the creature springs from my imagination via my hands. I have no idea when I start what it will finally look like. After it has been through the bisque and the glaze firings it develops its individual appearance.

When I started making the bronze coloured dragons, many years ago, before the digital camera  era, our daughter Fiona took this photo of one of the first clutch that hatched from our kiln.                         We christened him George, being new to the naming of dragons with more befitting Celtic sounding names . He now resides in Singapore, where he probably has a suitably Oriental name.
