Varney Farm Project
Our current outreach project is partnering with Foodshare to assist in growing vegetables on the Varney Farm on Pleasant Valley Road. Foodshare distributes 14 tons of food per day to 400 charitable programs in Hartford and Tolland counties in an effort to end hunger in the greater Hartford area. The Varney farm contributed 15,677 pounds of produce to Foodshare during 2008 and expanded their production with club assistance to grow 17,311 pounds in 2009. This project is a great opportunity to assist our neighbors and to learn how to grow vegetables while doing it!
Gardening with Children
Trish Safner and her committee have made great strides with the preschoolers at South Windsor Child Development Center's children's garden and in helping construct the new outdoor experience area.

Be a Beetle Farmer Some club members are raising Galerucella beetles for release to combat the spread of purple loosestrife, an invasive, non-native plant which is invading wetland areas. These tiny beetles are an environmentally friendly biological control for this beautiful, but destructive, plant.
