| Mark Evanier, who is well-known among comic book afficianados for his time spent as an assistant/apprentice to the legendary Jack Kirby, has also spent quite a bit of time in the world of Television writing as well. He started out as a Story Editor for Welcome Back, Kotter, and has written for such diverse shows as The McLean Stevenson Show, Scooby and Scrappy-Doo, Pink Lady and Jeff, Dungeons & Dragons, Pryor's Place, Garfield and Friends and superman: The Animated Series. He's also participated in DVD extras for a nice bunch of animated program releases, including the 1966 Spider-Man series and upcoming releases for Huckleberry Hound and Yogi Bear. In a nutshell, Mark's very well connected! Today he's reported at his NewsFromMe.com website that "a company" (he says that he believes it to be Time-Life...more on that in a moment) is preparing an announcement for "any day now", which will see the DVD release of every episode of Get Smart. We told you way back in February that a studio (not named at the time) was looking at finally getting this show released on DVD in time for the program's 40th anniversary. Part of the hold-up, as Evanier explains it, was a lot of confusion surrounding the rights to this particular property. A *lot* of people thought it would be Paramount who owned Get Smart, but Evanier explains that "Time-Life" is apparently the owner here, but the real issue now is "specifically WHO at Time-Life?" When Evanier says "Time-Life," it brings to mind the direct sales arm at TimeLife.com, which currently provides Hee-Haw releases, among others. There is also some discussion elsewhere that these DVDs could come out from Time Life, Inc. subsidiary Warner Home Video, as a mainstream retail release instead of from direct sales. Carl Birkmeyer, who runs the Would You Believe? website, is quick to point out that HBO (whose home videos are distributed by Warner Home Video) ought to be the current property owner due to their production of the 1995 Get Smart remake series starring Don Adams, Barbara Feldon, and Andy Dick. We're working on finding out more about this complicated matter for you, but right now all we *think* we know is that the earliest any DVDs would actually be available to consumers is around the first quarter of 2006, and that Season Sets are the direction they are looking at. Extras have been considered, but to our knowledge no decision had been made at the last time we heard anything. Our thanks to reader Brent Seguine for sending us the tip about Mark Evanier's post on this subject. Stay tuned, and we'll keep you updated on developments just as soon as the cone of silence is lifted... | |

There is now a rumor that Get Smart WILL be coming to DVD! The rumor was posted on TVSHOWSONDVD.COM on 2/28. Here is a copy of the post:
We'll dispense with the Cone of Silence for this one! Industry sources have passed along whispers that Get Smart is finally being looked at for DVD. Yes, they are said to be moving on this at last, trying to time a release between the months of Sept. 2005 and May 2006. That timeframe marks the 40th anniversary of the airing of the first season of the show, and - though the actual studio has not been named - we hear that the powers-that-be are anxious to make that deadline.
We'll see if they can pull it off! If they can't make that ("missed it by THAT much!"), they are said to want to try to tie in a release to the new Get Smart film that's in the works .
This show is one of my personal favorites, and I'm very happy to be posting this gossip this morning. How accurate will it turn out to be? Would you believe that you should stay tuned?
This prediction goes along with my last GET SMART UPDATE. Yet, it is more of a fact than a prediction. I have been reading TVSHOWSONDVD.COM's "latest news" section, and have to conclude that Get Smart WILL be on the top 10 of the most wanted unreleased tv shows list during sometime this year in 2005! This is because of four other shows that are coming to DVD. Once they are released they will be taken off the list, therefore pushing GET SMART up in the ratings. Those shows are THE COSBY SHOW (13th place), BEWITCHED (11th place), WONDER YEARS (6th place), and LOIS & CLARK: THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN (1st place). After those shows are released, GET SMART (that is currently in 14th place) will automatically be bumped up to 10th place! This is very good news! If Paramount looks at the list when GET SMART is in the top ten, I am hoping that they will finally consider bringing this classic show to DVD.
As the Jeffersons would say, we are movin' on up! GET SMART has gone from 16th place to 15th on TVSHOWSONDVD.COM'S unreleased shows list! Mind you that these "lists" on TVSHOWSONDVD.COM's website ARE seen by the studios that make these DVD's (For instance, Paramount, Universal, Sony that use to be Columbia/Tristar, Fox, Warner Bros., etc.). I would recommend that all you GET SMART fans register to become a TVSHOWSONDVD.com member (which is free), go to TV Show voting, and vote for GET SMART season sets. This way we can eventually push Get Smart to #1!
Wouldyoubelieve.com's Get Smart DVD Petition has now reached over 4,000 signitures including mine! This particular petition is trying to get 10,000 signitures so that they can prove to Paramount that there are plenty of people out there who love GET SMART! So please, help the Get Smart campaign by taking some time to sign this petition. You can sign the petition by clicking here:
