Potty Training Your Puppy

One of the biggest concerns for new dog owners is the thought that their new puppy may leave a lot of unwanted presents around the house.

The good news is that this doesn't need to be a major obstacle and with just a little bit of effort, some consistency and a lot of praise it can be mastered within a few days - keeping in mind that you may still have the odd accident every now and then.

Here's just a few little tips and tricks to help you on your way.

    * First and most important is for you (the owner) to be consistent.

    * If it's too hard for you to initially take your puppy outside when potty training, set up an area (preferably by a door that puppy will use in future) and cover the area with newspaper.

    * When you see your pup preparing to go to the toilet place him on the newspaper or take him outside and give him whatever command you want him to follow eg. "toilet" "wee" etc. Once he has completed his business, praise him.

    * Always take him outside (or to newspaper) after a nap, eating or playing for awhile and use the same command.

    *  You will have the odd accident - rubbing his nose in it really won't help. If you catch him in the act a stern no will suffice, then place him in his spot and use the command.

    * If you notice your puppy sniffing around or racing around the house - when not playing (and you can usually tell the difference) take him to his spot and use the command.

    * Always praise him when he does the right thing.

    * By being consistent and taking him to the same spot every time, it won't be long before he is racing to the back door etc. to let you know it's time.

    * Consistency and a lot of praise or treats are a good basis for any training, your pup is never too young to start learning the basics. Remember he wants to please you.
