The Random Song

Music by George Eldridge, Lyrics by Louise Melhuish and George Eldridge

Courtney Love, we hate her guts / the heater is driving me bloody nuts / everyone's gone off without me / with the lights out, please refrain me / drumsticks on the table / making me disabled / fender premier zildjian peavey / you're just a victim of society / THIS IS THE RANDOM SONG //

It's basically just really random, we wrote it after school in the music classroom and we were just looking around the room and making a song about what we saw and made it rhyme...took about 10 mins to write, George wrote the main chords and Louise wrote the opening riff.

Many people have said that on the original Dogs In General EP recording, Louise sounds like a guy. She has always felt that the vocals on the original sounded much better than on the recording for 'Be Nice Or Leave', however in order to rectify this the whole song had to be recorded again, as the file had been deleted, so it was never done.

Little Drummer Boy

Music by Louise Melhuish, lyrics by Louise Melhuish and George Eldridge

Let me tell you a funny story / about all the people that we hate / they decided to be drummers / this was their first mistake // they think they're cool but let me tell you / got no control and got no rhythm / they should all be locked up in a zoo / so we can point and laugh at you // stop trying to impress your girlfriend / she thinks you're as rubbish as I do / maybe she should just go and leave you / if she's got any common sense //

Well, Louise thought she would make up the easiest riff in the world that even a dumbarse could do, and it actually ended up sounding quite good. So far it's one of our more popular songs. We just kind of jammed the song and put the lyrics to it that we decided should be about people who think they're so excellent at drums when they're not really and coming up with the lyrics was a nightmare but it was worth the effort.

This was the first proper guitar solo Louise ever wrote, although she couldn't play it at first. It took a while to learn to play it properly, and you can really hear the big improvement on it from the original recording to the 'Be Nice Or Leave' version.

David always hated this song so we began to play it less and less and gigs in practice. The song was almost disowned but it was still to be released as a new version.

Seven/Eleven

Music by Louise Melhuish, "lyrics" by Louise Melhuish.

BLAH BLAH RAP SUCKS BLAH BLAH WHATEVER BORING BARK BLAH BLAH //

I just thought doing a song with a dodgy time-signature would be quite cool and so I wrote this metally song that goes into a head-banging chorus. We felt that giving it proper lyrics would probably take over from the essential heaviness to the song so I improvised some shouting at random intervals in the song.

The shouting eventually developed into death metal screaming later on. On the 'Be Nice Or Leave' recording, you can hear some people talking in the background. At the beginning, David says 'Hello' in a weird voice, and after the first chorus, George can be heard saying 'Oh shit, that's disgusting!' after David fired an ear plug out of his nose at him.

Alone + Lazy

Words and music by Louise Melhuish

I didn't get a lot of sleep last night, I got bags under my eyes / I have nothing to do except sit and stare at the walls / Badly painted nails and losing all my friends / scratched away at the window pane but nothing is clear // no rest for the wicked / happy birthday boredom spell / music blaring in my deaf ears / alone and lazy for years // don't wanna listen to any music / I heard it all before / I have too many cds anyway / from the local store // no rest for the wicked / happy birthday boredom spell / music blaring in my deaf ears / alone and lazy for years // heard it all before//

This song is basically about someone who's been miserable for so long that not even music can cheer them up. The first line of the song is taken from another song Louise wrote when she was 12, entitled 'Free Within The Boundaries Of The Law'. The original vocal melody on the 'Dogs In General EP' was the same as the chords underneath but it was tweaked around a bit and it sounds much better. A guitar solo was also added towards the end of the song, and can be heard on 'Be Nice Or Leave'.

Just Having Fun

Words and music by George Eldridge

Just having fun, trying to be one / of those people who knows someone / throw your life out of the window pane / so I can show you it's bad to be sane / ask me why, and got no answer / it's bad to be sane // sit yourself back on that swing for a little while / let me tell you how to die for a little while / then I'll go home and eat clay for a little while / when I come back can you stay for a little while? // go buy a car, impress a girl / don't have a crash, don't save the world / turn the headlights off and please don't cough / like I said before, I can't open the door / I'm hardly a friend, never wearing a trend / just having fun, trying to know someone // sit yourself back on that swing for a little while / let me tell you how to die for a little while / then I'll go home and eat clay for a little while / when I come back can you stay for a little while? / and get me some rope that's about six feet long / tie me a noose as I'm doing you wrong / all my bones heal and chicks dig the scars / this is my reason for wishing on stars to you // I've got pictures of you, but I can't see your face / lie down with me, run away and be free / just having fun, and i'm trying to have fun / I'll go out with you  / can we break up right now? / I don't wanna have fun, I just wanna be one / of those people here for you / and if you're happy then stay that way and if you're sad, please don't be mad / I just wanna be here for you //

Well, I (George) wrote this song about a girl and this is basically how I felt about her at the time. Some of it might seem irrelevant but you probably wouldn't understand unless you were a third decan Pisces, Jesus man, Fucking astrology.........I love my friends, they rock

"George's drum fills seriously rock on this track, and it's what makes it an authentic RWS sound"- Louise Melhuish, Guitarist and Singer for RWS.

On the original recording, which has since been lost, George played all guitars. He gave Louise a lyrics sheet, played it through twice and she then sang a tune with the lyrics she had been given. This became the cemented melody and can be heard on the 'Be Nice Or Leave' version. David never played on either version, as for the original he had not yet joined the band, and for the new version he was late for the recording session so Louise and George went on ahead and recorded it.

Misprint Bible

Music by David Welch, Louise Melhuish and George Eldridge, Lyrics by Louise Melhuish

Now it's time to face the truth / because no one around you cares / you lived your life in the same old way / but there's something in the air / 'cause it's about time you realised / your life will never be the same again / you've got to find your friends before it's too late / and wait for the bitter end // my world is caving in / your life is caving in //  now it's time to lobotomise / but don't worry you won't feel a thing / it's not enough to sacrifice / if you believe in anything // your soul is caving in / my world is caving in // The bible tells me so / the bible tells you so / the bible tells us so / the bible tells him so / the bible tells her so / the bible tells it so / the bible tells them so / the bible tells me so //

David's first song he wrote on with RWS. The vocal melody was intended to be hard-hitting so Louise kept it fairly simple and at a pitch she could shout them at. David came up with the essential riff, then we all worked around that together and the result is this song, by far one of our best.

The lyrics are kind of about religious and government brainwashing and how it's brought about the apocalypse. They were half-inspired by the book 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' by George Orwell.

The vocals appear to have been overdubbed. In actual fact, the effect was a mistake where Louise sang too close to the speakers, so the microphone recorded her and the speakers at the same time.

Connubial Butchery (The Cannibal Song)

Music and Lyrics by Louise Melhuish

They've never loved each other / I could see it in their eyes / so the day they got engaged / was a big surprise / the one thing they had in common / I couldn't quite place / They always looked at people / with a look of hunger on their face // you take the left side babe / and I'll take the right / we'll eat up the mess we make / and by dawn we're out of sight // the invitation was written to me / in lumpy red ink / but they are always like that / I didn't stop to think / I went and sat on the pew / right in the back row / they waited for their cue / then went for the vicar's throat // it doesn't matter about the reception / or the wedding cake / make sure the doors are locked / our feast can't escape / you take the left side babe / and I'll take the right / we'll eat up the mess we make / and by dawn we're out of sight // I throw my weight against the door / but there is no way out / the exit is tightly sealed / no one can hear me shout / dead corpses everywhere / looks like I'm the last one left / I feel two hands round my neck / and I've run out of air // it doesn't matter about the reception / or the wedding cake / make sure the doors are locked / our feast can't escape / you take the left side babe / and I'll take the right / we'll eat up the mess we make / and by dawn we're out of sight //

This song is about two cannibals who get married just so they can eat the guests at their wedding, hence why it is known to some fans as 'The Cannibal Song'. Louise was trying to think of a theme that would make a good horror movie and I was just drifting off to sleep when it came to her. This song was by far the hardest to write because the chords are weird and it was difficult trying to make up a melody that went over the top. Then thinking of the theme was even harder and getting lyrics to fit took about 4 days. But here is the finishing result which we all think is well worth the effort and hope you will too when you hear it. Louise later used the lyrics concept to write a short story for English GCSE coursework.

We felt it would be a good idea to give George a drum solo for a change, and he relishes the opportunity. RWS were unsure what to put in the interval between the second chorus and final verse, and by chance, David had brought a thing that made a noise like a cow mooing to recording that day. It went perfectly.

Instrumentals

THE FUNKY ONE (INSTRUMENTAL) music by George Eldridge and Louise Melhuish

Well, it's the funky one. It's a song you can dance to and it's quite fun to play live. George was jamming a funk beat and looping it over and over, and then Louise put the guitar to it. On both recordings, Louise plays the first solo and David plays the second. Louise's original solo was completely improvised, and she felt it needed a little bit more variation. David's solos on both recordings are completely improvised. The scream at the end of the 'Be Nice Or Leave' version is George after he had finished drumming. We decided to keep it in.

LAST CALL (IN STRUMENTAL) music by Louise Melhuish

This is a ballady instrumental that starts off with just drums, guitar and bass, and then Thunder effects and Strings come in later on in the song. It's very atmospheric and I was going to put lyrics to it, but we decided that it sounded better without them.

HUMPHREY'S SONG (INSTRUMENTAL) music by David Welch, George Eldridge and Louise Melhuish

This is a bluesy song that we jam to. The recording was completely jammed, hence why it's patchy in a few places. It's named after our good friend Humphrey the Clock, and was going to have lyrics but we also felt this song sounded better without them too.
