Frequently Asked Questions

***This java chat applet only supports Netscape 4.76 or IE 5.0 and above. Users that have not used this applet before will need to grant it permission when the pop up window appears from Netscape and Internet Explorer***
  • All I see is a grey rectangle. Why doesn't the applet start?

This chat room run in the Java computer language, and require a browser which is capable of running Java. Such browsers include Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3 or higher, and Netscape Navigator version 3 or higher. These applets will not run on the WebTV browser device, nor on certain versions of the America Online built-in browser.

  •  Why won't the applet run on my computer at work?

The intranets used by many businesses have "firewalls" which are designed to prevent the transmission of computer viruses and theft of sensitive corporate data. In some cases, these firewalls block data needed by Java applets. Go tell your boss to take down the firewall so you can chat at your desk.

  •  How do I run these applets through America Online?

The AOL built-in browser has a feature called "compressed graphics", which is normally enabled when the AOL software is installed. Unfortunately, the "compressed graphics" feature prevents many Java applets from working correctly. This problem can be corrected by turning off the "compressed graphics" feature. Here's how:

    • 1) Click on the "Prefs" button at the top of the AOL browser window. This will open up a dialog box.
    • 2) Click on the "Web Options" tab at the top of the "Internet Options" dialog box.
    • 3) Now you will see a property sheet with a checkbox marked: "Use compressed graphics". Make sure that this box is NOT checked.
    • 4) Click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the dialog box.
    • 5) Close the AOL application and restart it. The chatroom should now work correctly in the built-in browser.
