10-22-07  An email from Jane Hatchett Inman-BUDD!

I enjoyed seeing the photos from the July Reunion.  It looks like you had a great time and I wish I could have been there.

I was a little busy myself on July 28th.  I was actually on my way to Las Vegas for a vacation and to get married.  Gary and I were married on Aug 1st and no; there were no Elvis impersonators involved.  Did you know their Marriage License Office is open 7 days a week from 8 am until Midnight?  It was my first trip to Vegas and it was overwhelming to say the least.  But we had a good time and also visited the Grand Canyon.

Island life has been good and so far this year we have avoided any bad storms or hurricanes.  Hurricanes are a grave concern here.  It’s a small island and there’s no place to evacuate to.  Usually if there is a threat only tourists are asked to leave. The airlines will send extra planes to get them off.

I had a unique opportunity to go on a sunset cruise the other day with some well known and interesting people.  I’m including a few photos.  The first photo is of Michael Clarke Duncan and me.  He co-starred in the movie “The Green Mile”.  He is a big guy but of course not as big as he looked in the movie.  He was funny, gracious and just an all around nice guy.  The next photo includes Shawyne (?), Jasmine Guy (she appeared on the Bill Cosby Show, Fresh Prince, & A Different World), Vanessa (Michael’s girlfriend) & me.  Jasmine Guy is a very nice person and quite fascinating to talk to.  The 3rd photo is of Dwayne (he works for my husband), Michael Duncan, Gary (my husband) and me.  And last is a photo of Gary, me, Kelly (Dwayne’s fiancée) & Dwayne.  Also on board the boat were a camera crew and staff from Access Hollywood.

This country has become a mecca for the rich & famous but this was my first chance to get up close and personal.  Al Gore is supposed to be here next month for a conference at the Beaches Resort.  I doubt I will run into him at the grocery store.

That’s all the news for now.

9/13/07 - Thanks to Brenda Ayers Ferguson for this update on Barry Hussey (DMHS Class of '73), from Barry's wife, Mary Carol:

Hello to all,

We have good news. Thursday was Barry's follow-up
appointment with Dr. Tatter at Baptist Hospital. According
to the MRI that was taken that morning, the tumor is
dying!!!    Dr. Tatter showed us on the film where there
were two dark spots on the tumor. This is where the tumor is
not absorbing blood and is therefore dying.

However the tumor is larger than it was last summer. We are
hoping that this is still just swelling that they told us
about last summer. Sometimes a dying tumor will swell right
before it shrinks. This is a rare fibrous tumor and they do
not have as many case studies on this type of tumor as they
do on Meningioma tumors. They say this tumor is like a
meningioma but different.

The reason Barry's pituitary has not functioned properly is
because (they think) the tumor was pressing on it, but it
could have also been the gamma-knife too. As long as Barry
is on his medicine, he will be fine. Unfortunately the
doctor says he will have to be on the medicines for the rest
of his life. Dr. Tatter wants us back in 9 months for
another MRI.

At any rate, we don't have to do any type of surgery or
radiation for now. Hopefully, the tumor will continue to die
and shrink in the process.

Thank you all for your support, cards and prayers,

God Bless you all,
Mary Carol & Barry

9/9/07 - A note from Brenda Ayers Ferguson:

Wanted to say thank you for my "special" get well card. I want to keep that one, of all the ones I have received.     (Special-made, from the DMHS Class of '72!)

Surgery went well.  A little disappointed however that I will be out of work for 4 more weeks and having therapy 3 times a week.  But whatever it will take to avoid a full knee replacement, I will listen.  The good Lord knows what is takes to slow a person down and give them time to think!

Love to all the class mates!

8-19-07 - The Stroller section of the Martinsville Bulletin reported that Mary Jordan has attributed the renovation progress at the Spencer-Penn Centre to "the perseverance of Spencer-Penn alumni and their families, neighbors, friends and many other people" that have visited and supported the efforts of the Spencer-Penn School Preservation Organization.  She said that the recent wish list involved the redesigning of the parking lot and playground areas.  Royce Hylton (DMHS Class of '72), an engineer with Brunk and Hylton Engineering, Inc., and Billy Joyce, who both live outside of the area, volunteered their services to help redesign both projects.

8-16-07 - Got a nice email from Bobby Kanode and some WONDERFUL pictures that his daughter took at the reunion.  Thank you Bobby and Bailey!  ~Linda

7-29-07 - Greetings from ATL. Got back this AM. Sorry we had to slip away from the reunion so early but we promised one of my nieces we would make a showing at her birthday party Sat. evening.

The primary reason for this message is to say a great big “THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!” to all you folks who worked so hard at putting the reunion together. You did a tremendous job and we are very fortunate to have such dedicated, hard working people like you as members of our class. Food was great, accommodations were great, music was very well done, and the memorabilia was great ……. I could go on and on but you get the idea………..a great job done by some really top notch people….Thanks all of you.

7/17/07 - From Brenda Ayers Ferguson - an update on Barry Hussey, DMHS Class of 1973.  From Barry's wife, Mary Carol:

Barry Hussey and Mary Carol HusseyHello to everyone.

Barry has been home now for almost 4 weeks and is getting stronger everyday. Dr. Lee saw him last Wednesday. He recommended Barry to continue with PT, OT and get back into Pool therapy. He also adjusted his medicine and gave him a botox shot in his right arm. That helps the arm not be so tight.  Barry is very motivated and is working hard at his exercises at home. He will go to his PT John Pero  inBarry Hussey, DMHS Class of 1973 Rocky Mt. tomorrow.

These pictures were taken this past weekend while Mary was home.

Please continue to pray. We go back to see Dr. Tatter August 7 for a follow up MRI and appointment. Dr. Tatter is the neurosurgeon who was with the team of doctors who performed his first gamma-knife treatment on Barry back in Jan. 2005. Meanwhile, Dr. Wilson has sent Barry’s films to a Dr. at the University Of Arkansas Medical Center. We are waiting to hear from him. I’m trying to get some info on Johns Hopkins and the Cleveland Clinic as well. But it is harder when you don’t know any doctors there.

Barry is doing so well; I hate to think he may have to go through another operation. We still need a miracle: My prayer is that God would curse that tumor at the roots and that it would shrivel up and die.

God bless you all
Love,
Mary Carol

Stephanie Brinegar and Jason Vipperman7/8/07 - Steve and Pam Brinegar announce the engagement of their daughter, Stephanie Brinegar, of Stuart, to Jason Vipperman of Ridgeway.  Jason's parents are Jay and Gloria Vipperman.  Stephanie is a 2002 graduate of Lynchburg College and a 2005 graduate of Richmond School of Law and is the chief Commonwealth's Attorney for the City of Martinsville.  Jason is a 2002 graduate of Ferrum College and is employed by Vipperman's Air Conditioning and Heating.  They are planning to be married on 11/10/07 on the beach in Destin, FL.  (Stephanie is currently running for Commonwealth's Attorney in Patrick County)!

7/9/07 - From Brenda Ayers Ferguson - an update on Barry Hussey, DMHS Class of 1973.  From Barry's wife, Mary Carol:

Barry is home!!! Thank the Lord.

He came home on Thursday and has been very happy. He is eating well and doing well. We have a lift to help him transfer from the wheelchair to the bed, to the shower chair, etc. We are treating that knee with kid gloves. Even though Barry was able to get a shot of cortisone to relieve the pain, we still need to keep weight off of it for now. Hopefully he can get back to pool therapy soon.

I’ll be at our annual family reunion this week, so if any of you would like to call or come by to see Barry, he will be at home. He will be spending time with his family on the fourth. He begins out-patient therapy at Blue Ridge Rehab later on this week. He will still get speech, OT and PT at least 3 times a week.

And by the way, the doctor’s appointment went well. The doctor was really happy to see Barry looking and doing so well. Because his Pituitary Gland was damaged, Barry will be on synthroid and prednisone for the rest of his life. But his levels are good and they will be checked periodically.

God bless you all and have a Happy Fourth of July,

Love,

Mary Carol

6/21/07 - A message from David Doyle:

I will be out of town for the Class of 72 35th Reunion.  I am so sorry because I would love to come.

I have enclosed a picture so you can see the grey!  Wow, we are getting up there!  I have three children and a stepdaughter.  My oldest, Heather, is married and living in Grand Junction, Colorado.  She has two children, Anna (3) and Daniel (1).  My middle daughter, Laura, lives here is Wilmington, NC and owns a David R. Doylecleaning business.  My son, Reid, is in his sixth year of college at UNC Wilmington.  I told him they don't give students tenure, but he replies that with a girl to boy ratio of 7 to 1, he's not in a hurry to go anywhere.  I guess the "fruit doesn't fall to far from the tree!"  My stepdaughter, Alex, is a sophomore here in Wilmington at a local high school.

I am with Merrill Lynch in Wilmington, North Carolina and run a practice with two other Advisors.  I have lived in Wilmington since 1995.  I love the area.

I pulled out my DMHS annual from the ninth grade, the last year I attended, and had a ball looking through the book.  We did have a lot of fun, didn't we.

I would love to see everyone.  Maybe next time.

The very warmest of regards to all, and if you are in Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach, look me up.

My email address at home is bebullish1@ec.rr.com.

6/19/07 - Brenda Ayers Ferguson forwarded an email to us from Barry Hussey's wife, Mary Carol, along with a picture.  Brenda said that she checked with Mary Carol about having this information posted on the DMHS '72 web site and she okayed placing the pictures and her comments so all classmates can see.  She hopes the posting will bring Barry visitors and also to keep him in our prayers!

This is a quick update to let you all know that Barry had a good Father’s Day. Our kids weren’t able to be with their father but they called and sent card and gifts. Van and Stephanie sent him the John Wayne DVD collections, which he will love. Mary Beth is sending pictures that she has taken. He did have some visitMary Beth Hussey, Stephanie, Van Hussey, Mary Carol Husseyors over the weekend. He is always up for having friends and family come see him.

Barry is doing well with his PT, OT and Speech therapies. The therapists enjoy working with him because he is so motivated. He knows we are working to get him home soon. Usually his therapies are in the morning or early afternoon, so the best time to call is in the evenings after 7:00 pm. His cell phone number is 732-9567.

Also I wanted to include some recent pictures from the wedding and of Barry & MB.

God bless you all.

I have been busy in the child rearing department. I have 4 children, 3 sons and 1 daughter, and 8 grandchildren and my first great grand child on the way. I am currently not working because my Mother needs around the clock care and has come to live with me, she is 87 now. I sell books and antiques on Ebay to supplement my income and am totally satisfied with my life. I married twice  but did not have very much luck in that category so I have been single for 23 years. 2/19/07 -  From Jane Hatchett Inman:  Imagine living on a tropical island, average year round temperature 83 degrees, trade winds constantly blowing and being with someone you love...sounds like a fairy tale or an advertisement!  It will soon be a reality for me.  I'm moving to Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands, BWI in March.  I visited the islands back in January and it is in a word...PARADISE.  However, there are a few downsides to paradise.  Everything has to be imported so living expenses are quite high there.  It's a British Territory and they drive on the other side of the road.  There are no traffic lights, only roundabouts.  This will take some getting used to.  Also, mosquitoes seem to love paradise too.  My temporary email address is feline262@yahoo.com.

I will update that address as soon as I can.
