Mosaic Community Care

While in Blackpool visiting the Bond Hotel we took the opportunity to visit another company, Mosaic Community Care.
They are advertising accompanied luxury holidays for the disabled. The idea is that they do all the homework necessary to take a disabled person away on an overseas holiday. They sort out medical insurance, make all travel arrangements, hotels etc and provide a trained carer to accompany you.  For this, their first season, they are doing Mediterranean Cruises for about £1500 per person, Orlando Florida for £1500 or Alaska and Glacier Bay for around £2500. The approximate figure is because before you leave you tell them what places you would like to visit and this will affect the cost. All of this is arranged for you before you leave the UK. We feel that this is very reasonable since the price includes an accompanying professional carer. If you have the cash and it sounds good, well why not, and your usual carer gets a chance for a holiday on their own too. We haven’t  actually tried a holiday with this company, so if you fancy it why not give them a go, then you can write and let us know whether they were up to scratch.

Is This My Seat

Having had a discussion about disabled people and Air Travel the other day, I decided to write this short article.

Whilst I know that every disabled persons needs are different when travelling on an aircraft, it is up to the individual to make sure that they inform the AIRLINE and not the tour operator of their needs.  You can still inform the tour operator but at the end of the day, they are NOT responsible for the aircraft that takes you on part of your journey, be it domestic or holiday flight.

‘ You may have booked your holiday for instance with Thomas Cook, Thomson’s etc but you may fly with My Travel Airways because that is who they may hire the aircraft from.  The holiday companies/tour operators book your holiday and flight and even book you extra leg room seats but they cannot make the decision on which seats that you can travel in.’

It is always assumed by disabled travellers that they should always have the best seats available on the aircraft.  I am afraid that this is not possible because of safety issues whilst on board.  The most common that I have heard is, “I asked for the front seats next to the emergency exit but they refused to allow me to sit there”.  I understand what they are saying, but it is not possible on aircraft for disabled people to sit in these seats as they may not be able to open the door in an emergency.  Even children under the age of 16 on some airlines are not allowed to sit in these seats.  It is up to the Airline and not the tour operator where people sit on an aircraft depending on their needs.

I have flown on several occasions myself and I have always contacted the airline to ensure that my flight can be as trouble free as possible by explaining my needs to them even though they are not as critical as other people.

The GOLDEN RULE is always contact the Airline that you are flying with to check with them about any special needs that you require whilst flying with them.  If need be, also ask for it in writing so that you can produce proof on the day of your flight.

Possibly the tour operators will take note and hopefully tell disabled travellers that they need to get in touch with the airline.  Until then, it is up to  be left up to you and me to ensure that our flight is what we requested.

I hope that I have not offended anybody, but this needs to be aired so that people can make adequate preparations for their flight.

Travel Insurance

I know that elsewhere on our website we have links to various Travel Insurance Companies.  However, did you know, that quite a number of people already have travel insurance but do not know about it.  I myself fell into this category and have been paying for travel insurance when I was already covered.  It was not until some weeks ago when I was visiting my friendly bank manager that I was informed that I was already covered for travel insurance via my bank account.

It seems that when I upgraded my account to a Platinum Account with Lloyds TSB that travel insurance was included with the various other items as well.  It was not until I asked the bank manager about a quote for travel insurance for my upcoming holiday that I found that I was already covered and that all I had to do was to inform Lloyds Insurance of my medical conditions.  The bank manager did this for me and all was well.

I am not suggesting that this may be the best option for everybody, but I found that the cover was adequate for myself and my wife's needs.  Also may I say that the insurance people are very friendly and courteous and will try their best to help you.

So, before you go out and purchase Travel Insurance, check to see if you are already covered via your bank account, it could save you a significant amount of money in the long run.

Travel Hints

Many disabled people dislike travel because of the uncertainties of whether they will be able to get into the hotel, manage the bathroom, get into bed, get into the train/plane or onto the ship etc. Today, if travelling to Western Europe or North America these fears are unfounded.  However, one must plan one’s trip with the thoroughness of a military campaign. Some cruises are now accessible, and some tour operators do run trips with disabled people in mind.  Please make sure that they do have the necessary skills, knowledge and accessibility for your needs though.

Have a look at the following check list:-

1.      Make sure the travel agent knows exactly what your minimum requirements are! Otherwise was it their fault that you were unable get onto the tour bus or into the hotel.

2.     Ring your destination/holiday  hotel and make sure the management have been informed of your requirements.

3.     Ring the airport and check on the arrangements for getting your wheelchair and you from the car to the aeroplane.

4.     Ensure, especially if you cannot transfer from your wheelchair, that a suitable vehicle is going to be at the destination airport to take you onwards to your hotel. Airport coaches are often not low loading.  American taxis, unlike ours, cannot take you in your wheelchair either. Some good travel agents with specialist agents can sort this out for you before you travel, Global Star Travel for instance.

5.     Make sure that the Airline you are travelling with is willing to carry your power-chair if you are thinking of travelling with it.

6.     Should a catheter be necessary for longer flights check with your doctor in plenty of time so that he can get the equipment required for you.

7.      Make sure you have holiday medical insurance. As a disabled person you may well need specialist travel insurance. This can be supplied by En Route Insurance for probably a lot less than you think.

    Tel.: 0800 7837245.
www.enrouteinsurance.co.uk

If all this sounds horrendous, then you probably require expert advice. The DMF may be able to help, 0191 4163172. Some travel agents today do carry specialist agents to look after the interests of disabled travellers. Be careful, many may say they do, but in fact may not.

One that definitely does is Global Star Travel, 49 Station Approach, Hayes, Bromley, Kent, BR2 7EB tel. 0870 7409103. The person to talk to is Dorna Brown, she arranges all our travel for us.

Lastly, don’t think that because you are in a wheelchair you cannot travel just like anybody else, you can, with the correct planning, and with the realisation that the world does not owe you a living. Most people are willing to help somebody in a wheelchair. Most people in Western Europe either speak English or know somebody who does. Just about everyone in America and Canada speaks English, with a rather quaint accent, (Revenge is sweet)!!! Advice and help on your travels is therefore available, and great holidays can be had. For proof, my wife, her wheelchair and I have travelled all over America, Canada and a fair chunk of Europe, so why not you?  Enjoy – you deserve it – besides you have only one life, just like an able bodied person, so why should you lose out.

Airport Parking

AIRPORT PARKING FOR BLUE BADGE HOLDERS AND PASSENGERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Are you a blue badge holder or have special needs that may require wheelchair access looking for airport car parking?

If so, then this short article will help to explain what options are available and how you can go about making enquiries or bookings to ensure you have a comfortable and hassle free journey to the airport.

When planning a holiday or trip that involves air travel you need to know that the whole journey is accessible before you set out. Encountering a problem at any stage of the journey such as not being able to find assistance, or a particular vehicle not being accessible could ruin the whole experience, leave you stranded or even stop you from traveling altogether.

Whether you are a disabled traveler or require wheelchair access it is worth taking the time and trouble to plan your travel arrangements before you set out, so that you can enjoy your trip and the journey itself can be a pleasure.

If you are flying from a UK airport you may require airport car parking. Recently I had an email from a customer enquiring about disabled parking facilities. To my surprise we had very little information on our website and when I looked on other websites there was also a lack of information.

This led me to spend some considerable time putting together all the information a traveler with special needs may require when considering their car parking arrangements at the airport. I have covered the five main UK airports which account for over 60% of passenger traffic. I will be updating our information for other airports in due course, meanwhile you can visit our website for the most up to date information regarding your departure airport.

Please note: at all UK airports, for security reasons, the blue badge (previously orange badge) scheme applies in car parks only. There is no waiting period outside the terminal buildings and no vehicles can be left unattended.

Insurance for Adapted Vehicles

Advice About Owning Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles & Adapted Cars.

More people are moving away from the Motability Scheme and are now purchasing their own vehicles. When buying an adapted or wheelchair accessible vehicle it is important that the conversion has been done by a specialist company.

There are many specialist conversion companies, giving you the freedom of choice to be able to select the right vehicle that is suitable to meet all of your needs. It is just as important when choosing your insurance. You need to get the correct level of cover required to protect your vehicle. It is recommended that you seek advice from one of the many insurance specialists who have the experience and policies tailored to care for you & your vehicle.  Many people who buy a converted vehicle will insure it through a direct insurer or a non specialist intermediary at what appears to be an affordable premium. However is the cover provided correct for the vehicle?

What is covered in the event of an accident?
Most non-specialist insurers may only protect your vehicle. This leaves the cost of repair or replacement of any adaptations fitted to your vehicle to be paid by you.
Most specialist insurance providers will guarantee that adaptations are fully covered for replacement if damaged in an accident.

Do I get a courtesy vehicle?
Most non-specialist insurers may exclude a courtesy vehicle from your policy or provide you with a small vehicle, which may not be suitable.
Most specialist insurance providers will either provide a suitable vehicle or allow travel costs to enable you or your disabled passenger to keep mobile.

 Who can drive?
Most non-specialist insurers may exclude carers or limit the number of drivers permitted on the policy.
Most specialist insurance providers have policies that cater for carers and family members.

 Where can I drive?
Non-specialist insurers may exclude any form of foreign use for your vehicle.
Most specialist insurance providers will extend full cover for Europe and the territorial limits as permitted by insurance companies.

What are the age limits for new business?
Non-specialist insurers may have age restrictions ranging from drivers  aged from 17 to 75 years old.
Some Specialist insurance providers will be able to cover Disabled driver’s from 16 years old up to 80 years old.

How much will this Cost?
Non-specialist insurers may be more competitive on price but is the cover they provide tailored for your needs.
Most Specialist insurance providers will rate your policy on an individual basis and the premiums may be lower than you might expect.

 What about Cancellation Charges?
Non-specialist insurers may charge what is called short period rates. (if you cancel a policy mid term little or no refund may be available).
Most Specialist insurance providers have agreements with insurers for a pro – rata refund ( you only pay for the time you have used the policy( some charge may be applicable from specialist)).

How can I contact a specialist provider?

The following companies are recommended specialist provided by The Disabled Drivers Association, Disabled Drivers Motor Club & The Disabled Motorists Federation

Chard Insurance – 01460 61373 recommended by DDA

 Chartwell Insurance – 0800 652 1653 recommended by DDA & DDMC

 Fish Insurance – 0500 432 141 recommended by DDA & DDMC

Heath Lambert Insurance – 01603 828 392 recommended by DDA

 Privilege Insurance – 0113 292 5555 recommended by DDMC

Each specialist has their own insurance provider and policies are subject to individual terms & conditions. It is important that you understand these terms and that you are satisfied with the cover offered before you subscribe to any insurance product.
