Description of Classes Spring 2009

9:00-11:00

Spanish 1 for High School Credit: This class will meet the high school requirements for first year Spanish. The two-hour class will cover conversation, reading and writing in Spanish and will require homework outside of class. The required text is Paso a Paso, Level 1, 2nd ed. and is available new or used through Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Paso-Level-1-Myriam-Met/dp/0673589226/ref=sr_11_1/002-8659121-5008004?ie=UTF8&qid=1217737084&sr=11-1 Please don’t register for this class if you are not willing to put in the work required for a High School credit. There is a conversational Spanish class offered for students who are interested in Spanish but aren’t looking for a high school credit. Monica Thompson will be teaching our Spanish classes for the third year. She also taught at Dayspring Academy with much success.                                                                                                                                                              Cost: $10.00/week

Sign Language for High School Credit: 2nd year This class is the 2nd year of a two-year rotation which meets the requirement for High School language credits. The class is open to students who participated in last year’s Sign Language 1 or who have completed one year of sign language elsewhere and obtain the teacher’s permission. The class will again be taught by Bart Brown whose first language is ASL.                                                                                                                                                                  Cost: $5.00/week

 

9:00-10:00

Ballroom Dancing: 5th grade + The class will cover the history of the ballroom dances, dance floor etiquette, and techniques in Fox Trot, Waltz, Tango, Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, and Swing, to name a few. These classes will help students' confidence and the skills learned will be valuable in many social situations like proms and weddings. Plus, it's a lot of fun ! ! Open to boys and girls. The class will be taught by Vanessa and Victoria Yore who have been trained in various forms of dance for quite a few years and have received numerous 1st place and top honors in competitive ballroom dancing. They have also been teaching ballroom dancing classes at the public library.   Cost: $5.00/week

Let's Hear It: 2nd-8th grade Loosely based on the Toastmasters model of learning to speak effectively, this is not a typical Speech Class. This class offers students a chance to practice debate techniques, crafting your personal style of speech, encouraging critical thinking and promoting constructive criticism and how to improve through peer response. This class was a huge hit last year with my students! Expectations: Each student will be required to prepare a 1-5 min piece for speaking each week or be asked to give impromtu speaking pieces. No child is ever required to do so, however, so we allow personal moments of shyness and even the occasional mind-blank! Each student will need one pack of 3x5 cards (with or without lines)

10:00-11:00

Preschool: Ages 3-5    Zac the Rat Class.   Calling all potty trained 3-5 year olds ready to have fun, fun , fun with Zac the Rat (and Ms. Cheryl of course) We will explore the letters and their sounds with food, crafts, games and of course our favorite stories with Zac and his friends.  check it out on www.starfall.org   Teacher:   Cheryl Picerno  Cost:  $5 per class with a one time $5 materials fee

Chess: Advanced: This class for students with a bit of chess experience will focus on more advanced strategies and prepare kids to play in tournaments. Last year we were able to get our team “The Rolling Rooks” going which competed in tournaments with the St. Pete Chess Club and took home several individual and team trophies. Coach Allyn Kahn is a rated expert in chess and has coached chess for years and has also taught college mathematics. He is not only very knowledgeable of the game but an excellent teacher for all ages. Cost: $5.00/week

Science 2nd-4th: "Rocket Science"   We'll study rockets, planes, kites, birds and anything that flies.  As always, this class will be very hands-on with lots of experiments and activities. Teacher Judy Hekhuis. “I have an education degree and have had considerable multiple-age classroom experience.” Cost: $3.00/week $5.00 materials fee for the semester

Chef's Apprentices:  5th +  We will be learning the basics of food and kitchen safety, including the proper way to use knives, small appliances, and heat.  The students will also be studying different cooking methods and will receive recipes they can use to apply those methods.  The instructor, Anthula Blasingame, is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, and has experience in fine dining restaurants and hotels.

$10 a week (includes cost of food and supplies)   10 student maximum

Tennis:  K-1st  We will use portable nets in the gym to teach this sport of a lifetime via creative games, unique teaching methods and lots of fun!  Jason Bradstreet is a former Division I college tennis player, has professional tennis playing experience, played on an international tennis missions team in Germany, and has coached beginning kids and adults as well as elite college and professional athletes for the last 20 years.  He also founded Bradstreet Sports, Inc. with teaching locations at YMCAs, country clubs, Homeowner's associations and the like in Orlando and Tampa with all programs operating under the motto, "Compete with Character" so attitude, effort, and sportsmanship are at the heart of all classes.  Cost $3.00/week

11:00-12:00

Music: K-1st  Teacher: Nancy Bryant

Drama: 5th+  Always wanted to be an actor?  Now's your chance to learn the ropes in this theater class!  This class will involve an introduction to basic acting skills.  Students will participate in improvisation games, monologues, and scene work.  They will also learn blocking and stage positions.  Each student should come away with a better knowledge of effectively performing stage.  Teacher:  Amanda Robinson   Cost:  $3.00/week

Preschool: 3-5yrs    Finger Play the Day Away   Crafts and silly fingerplay songs make this class fly by.  Your potty trained 3-5 year old will learn through songs, body movements and a craft that will tie it all together.    Teacher:  Cheryl Picerno  $5 per class with a one time $5 materials fee

US History: 2nd-5th grade A 12-week class on early and Colonial American History. Learn about where and how different tribes lived in America, which countries came from Europe, how they got here, where they settled and how they made the USA! This class promises to be fun, crafty and enjoyable! I have some great crafts that I've spent the summer playing with for us to use to learn all about those early settlers and this class will be more in depth than the younger class. We will discuss the Constitution, work on memorizing the Preamble in an ingenious way and enjoy exploring how a country becomes a country, how a state becomes a state and what life was like long before the Internet, cars and TV!   Instructor: Shannon Mitchell.   Cost: $4 per class (speak to instructor about purchasing materials for class in lieu of payment)

12:30-1:00 and 1:00-1:30

Computer Tots: 3-5yrs old. Parents may have a computer at home or the preschool may have one in the classroom, but a specially trained teacher is the catalyst for learning! Young students have a wonderful time reinforcing their academic readiness skills, exploring their artistic flair for art and music, and using exciting peripherals such as robots, digital microscopes and movie cameras. The class will last for a half an hour and will be offered at both 12:30 and 1:00.

 

12:30-1:30

Spanish: Elementary: Monica Thompson has taught Spanish at Day Spring Academy as well as Discovery Days and will lead this conversational Spanish class to 1st- 5th graders.  Cost$5.00/week

Each week we’ll learn about a famous work of art and do an art project based on that art work using a variety of media and learning different art principles. Each student will receive a laminated card each week of the featured artwork and artist information to bring home.  Cost: $3.00/week  $5.00 materials fee for the semester

Writing Plus: 5thNot just creative writing! Students will study different types of writing including fables, tall tales, mysteries, fiction, non fiction, poetry, psalms, letter writing, journaling, newspaper writing and editing and research papers as well as review the parts of speech and work on punctuation, grammar and mechanics, proofreading and publishing. Teacher: Elizabeth Hopkins. Cost: $3.00/week

Karate: Tiny Tigers 4-7 year-olds: Blackbelts Isaiah and Noah Hekhuis will be returning as our Karate instructors as representative of Phillips Karate Academy which specializes in the Korean martial art of Tang Soo Do. Also, Mr. Phillips will be offering $5.00 class to homeschoolers at his studio who are green belt and above. For more information on this fascinating martial art go to the World Tang Soo Do website at www.pkatsd.com. Students must purchase a $20 uniform. Students who continue to second semester will be required to register with Phillips Karate Academy. Cost: $5.00/week

 

12:30-2:30

Biology for High School Credit: Lida Schedler will be teaching biology again this year. There will be outside reading and tests but most of the lab experiments will be done in class. Lida has used Apologia for biology in the past but has been dissatisfied with it for various reason (she’d be happy to discuss it will you if you’d like) and has decided to use the Bob Jones High School Biology curriculum. The students will have to purchase the student text only of Bob Jones Biology, 3rd ed. Which is fairly easy to find on used Ebay, or Vegsource or new at www.rocksolidinc.com  Cost:  $7.00/week, $45 per semester lab fee

 

1:30-2:30

Art K-1st: Get ready to get creative with Miss Judy! Sign Language:  3rd-6th grade   Learn sign language through songs, stories and games!  Teacher: Doty Brown, certified deaf interpreter.  Cost:  $3.00/week

CSI Crime Scene Investigation: 5th+ In this 6-week class which will cover the first session, we will take the unknown and compare it to what we do know to get scientific results. CSI looks at statistics including percentages of certain people with hair colors, left vs. right handed, specific kinds of finger prints, etc. Collecting evidence demands using proper procedures to protect the investigating agent and to protect and preserve the evidence. We will be working with substances found around our homes and schools; in the field, the substances might come from anywhere! Our activities will not involve anything of danger or “grossness”; in a real CSI career, however, you would be encountering a wide range of situation from fairly calm and clean to the other extreme. Cost: $45.00 for the 6-week session

Spanish 2: 5th+ This class is for students who have had some Spanish experience and want to learn more but don’t necessarily need high school Spanish credit. Monica Thompson has taught Spanish at Day Spring Academy as well as Discovery Days.  Cost: $5.00/week

Choir: In a group session students will be led in a choral rehearsal designed to develop comprehensive musicianship. During the rehearsals students will learn vocal technique, music theory, and vocal blend. Students will learn vocal warm-ups, exercises, and drills. The choir will rehearse significant choral music appropriate for church and other community events. A live performance from the choir will be planned at the end of the semester.  Teacher: Carol Heath  $5.00/week

US History for Middle/High School This class is for those students who are genuinely interested in history and discussion. We will be beginning at the early Colonial period of US History and go as far as 12 weeks can take us! I truly enjoy teaching History, I don't believe it should be boring and I want each student in this class to feel like their opinion is valid and that they can bring something to the table for discussion. I encourage debate and tangential learning.
Expectations: Students will be asked to check the blog for weekly announcements, possible reading assignments and usually some sort of anecdotal quirky learning tidbit. Students will be given copies of reading materials (significant documents, historical debates, etc) for the full 12 weeks and expected to do Approx 1 page of work per week and one project for the semester in order to earn 1 high school credit for the class. Parents welcome and encouraged.

Art: Drawing from Life: 5th+: Learn basic drawing skills such as perspective, line, shape, value, hue using pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, pastels, etc. We'll work on figure drawing, still life and drawing from nature. Teacher: Mrs. Schedler. $3.00/week

Introduction to 3D Visualization (I3D) – (For 6-8 year olds) - The main goal of the course is to introduce concepts of 3D.   Children hear the word “3D” all the time and yet if you ask them to explain it, they will likely not be able to do so.  Other goals are to introduce symmetry, a sense of “scale” and allow their creativity to build LEGO® models in at least 2 scales.  Cost: $45.00/6week session

3:30-4:30

Elementary Robotics (ER1) – (For ages 9+) - Students will learn about the basic capabilities of robots, learn how to build simple robots using the Lego NXT kits, and program them to overcome simple challenges.   Students will also be exposed to more challenging building and programming challenges that can be solved in future classes. Elementary Engineering II (EEII) are required to be considered for this class. Prior approval from the instructor is required to take this class. Keyboard:  Students will be provided a basic understanding for playing piano through a sequence of lessons that teach reading notes, technique, and music theory. The class will also be taught to read chord charts of popular worship and praise songs. There will also be ear training and lessons designed to encourage individual creativity.   Teacher: Carol Heath  Cost: $5.00/week

Embroidery: Ages 9 - Adult   Boys included! The members of the Embroiderers' Guild of America (E.G.A.) will teach embroidery techniques in plastic canvas, counted cross stitch and surface embroidery (Sea Life in Stitches).
